Engagement Date: May 2, 2008Wedding Date: June 2010Venue: Indiana Memorial UnionAbout Me: I'm an Indiana transplant living in DC with my fiance and our pretty kitty. I enjoy the color pink, I'm obsessed with the Dior New Look and tulle, and I heart my level 80 paladin. I'm a sucker for bad TV, literary theory, and cakes of all persuasion. I also happen to be marrying the cutest closet nerd around! It's all about Bloomington for us because it's where we met -- on the college paper. If there's a theme for our small summertime wedding, it's Dior meets Dorothy Draper on a lark in Bloomington; think poofy, plus graphic prints, bold colors, and a whole lot of prettiness.
When we started discussing the possibility of getting married, I jumped right into ring browsing. I couldn’t help myself. And like basically all women, I fell hard for this ring:
I ogled it for a good week until realizing the price of such a rock. It seemed diamonds were pricey — how strange!
So one day when I was flipping through an older issue of Vogue, I came across a wedding spread. And in that wedding spread was the most glorious ring I had ever seen. Read more…

So I had this problem. Pink was supposed to be the dominant color everywhere, even on the bridesmaids. This was proving to be a difficult concept. My mom was the biggest detractor.
At first I thought she was all about my pink-gasm of a wedding. This was not the case. It started innocently enough: she’d merely repeated what bridal store consultants told her. “The bridesmaids should wear a contrasting color.” “Olive would look better with an ivory dress.” “Your daughter is a moron.” Etc. Then, she grew the ovarian fortitude to say for herself she didn’t lurve the idea of light pink on bridesmaids, that they’ll look like crap, and so on. I got defensive, I got angry, maybe even a little… monster-like, I don’t know.
As an aside, you know how when you get pushed into a corner to like something and so you automatically blurt out you hate it? Yeah I said I hated green. A few times. I mean, I do intensely dislike the pink/green combination. It’s too preppy for my tastes.

Lovely, clear colors have a vital effect on our mental happiness.

Obvious statement of the day: I love pink. It’s endlessly cheerful, pretty, sometimes even a little ridiculous. While I knew I wanted pink to be the main color of the wedding, I also knew I wanted to pair it with something to make it feel a little more unexpected.
I don’t know when I stumbled upon Dorothy Draper’s interiors, but it was love. Serendipitously, she is also a purveyor of pink.
So what about her interiors are so inspiring? Read more…

Here’s a little diddy about me: in college I was an English major and I completed an honors thesis in creative writing. I was forced to constantly look around and make mental notes about odd or pretty things I noticed. With wedding planning I catch myself doing the same thing — finding color inspiration in random objects and places.
So, this is the new fragrance from Michael Kors. I have no idea what it smells like but the bottle is perfect. Coral pink and gold makes me a little giddy.
Now this introduces a new feel to my wedding scheme - glamour. Read more…

Our wedding is definitely going to have a bit of a ’50s vibe. That’s undeniable. I’ve been completely smitten with the Dior New Look for as long as I can remember.
The most iconic silhouette was the cinched-waist and crazy full skirt. Dior, coming from a decade of war shortages, played with the excesses of the ’50s. It’s super feminine and, well, pretty!
For the sake of preventing my wedding from resembling a sock hop, I’m infusing a few other elements. Read more…

So the very in thing to do when you’re planning a wedding is to create a mood board. This is very unfair: with the amount of gorgeous images lurking on wedding blogs, I become pretty paralyzed when it comes to choosing a… mood.
I know the primary color will be pink. I know it’s going to be girly. But beyond that I really struggled to make any real decision. So this was my first try:

Ribs and I met in May at the end of my third year of undergrad. It was going into the summer term and I had been accepted as an opinion columnist on the college paper. He was the opinion editor. Scandalous!
After some gchat flirtations, we started dating. We weren’t attached at the hip that summer because he was finishing courses to graduate, but it was just sort of lovely being with someone that was on the same level as me. I had come out of a relationship with someone who had major commitment problems, so it was nice to learn from that and be a better person for Ribs.

When I got the acceptance email from the delightful Penguin, I was at work. Work is no place to hear amazing news. I was at my desk, I knew Mr. Ribbons had just gone out to lunch, and I had no one to tell. I scrolled through my IM friend list to find anyone and everyone to tell, frantically typing “I’M GOING TO BE A BEEEEE.” That is a direct quote. Someone thought I was sending a cryptic message about Animorphs, but no matter, because I’m here!
I grew up in northwest Indiana, an area the rest of the state inexplicably likes to call “the region.” I went to a little college called Indiana University—you may have heard of it—where I met a slightly lanky newspaper editor. He was from Maryland, one of those exotic coasties. I fell for his gTalk quips, but he’ll say it was his rakish good looks. After a one year, mostly long-distance relationship, we got engaged!
I chose Ribbons because they fit quite nicely with our theme for the wedding: Read more…
