It’s Time to Show You All My…

It's Time to Show You All My... : wedding flowers Flowerp flowerp

Interestingly enough, one of the things that I did not give a flying flip about in the beginning of wedding planning was flowers. I had no desire for massive amounts of flowers—nothing over the top, no girly stuff, nothing of the sort. No pink was to come anywhere near the wedding. During this minimalist phase of early wedding planning, I loved the idea of having billy buttons and low potted plants. After a few months of wedding research and idea-sponging, I began to have second thoughts. Maybe I did want flowers. Maybe these weren’t such a bad idea. A few couldn’t hurt, right?

Then enter Amy Osaba and The Free Wedding. Ich bin game over gegangen. [Sidebar: "I went game over." This is what Mr. Scissors used to say as a kid when he lost a video game. He didn’t know what game over literally meant, but he knew it was all finished. OK, sidebar finished.] I have a serious, major, epic, colossal crush on her floral designs.

Just LOOK at these gorgeous flowers. Want, need, must have.

Blame Father of the Bride

January 25th, 2010 @ 3:23 pm by Mrs. Scissors

When I was small, I watched a little flick called Father of the Bride. Perhaps you’ve heard of it?

Blame Father of the Bride : wedding venues Fotb fotb

Well, because I watched this movie incessantly, I’ve always wanted to have a wedding reception at our house. Before we were engaged, Mr. Scissors and I would play “dream wedding”, and we’d always come to the conclusion that having the reception at my parents’ house would be the epitome of awesome. (Mr. S may or may not have known the game was called “dream wedding”. That’s probably something I made up.)

Holy Crap, It’s In.

January 22nd, 2010 @ 6:18 pm by Mrs. Scissors

Holy Crap, It's In. : wedding wedding dress Fa fa

A detail that I left out when writing about my experiences shopping for the bridesmaids’ dresses is one that, well, totally and most definitely deserves its own spotlight. After visiting Bella Bridesmaid, we decided to swing by Bridals by Lori to A: look at their selection of dresses, and B: check to see if my dress was in. I didn’t have very high hopes with respect to my dress being in, and actually debated even going to Bridals by Lori.

We walked in, I did my “I’m just here to look at bridesmaids’ dresses, plus I was wondering if I could go upstairs to visit my dress” spiel, but also asked if I could find out the status of my dress. The front desk lady started plunking away on her computer.

“Let me cheeeck to seee if… wait, what’s your name?”

“Miss Scissors, S-C-I-S-S-O-R-S. I don’t suspect that it’s in, since I haven’t gotten a phone ca-”

“It’s here. Downstairs, hasn’t been unboxed yet! It actually came in yesterday, but we were closed yest-”

Opening Up Another Whole Can of Worms

January 22nd, 2010 @ 12:54 pm by Mrs. Scissors

I was just about to hang up the towel for the day when I found this dress by Vera Wang, and was totally and completely floored.

What is this? A long dress? From someone who so forcefully said, “Ick, no long dresses at all. I’m not that mean,” just a year ago, if not a month ago? Yes. You see, I’d been pining over the Vera Wang dress for months, even prior to finding my dress, but wrote it off as being “too mean”. First of all, it was long, and I figured that it would be way out of the price range that I was willing to suggest. Vera Wang? C’mon, there’s no way that this dress would be able to work, right?

Wrong!

I’ve been stalling on this whole “finding the bridesmaids a dress” thing. We know that I sort of fell in like/love with some J.Crew bridesmaids’ dresses, but sadly, those are not meant to be. There was a chance that those dresses would not fit my darling ladies to the best of their abilities, so I scratched the J.Crew dresses off the list.

The Dress: It Begins

January 16th, 2010 @ 3:10 pm by Mrs. Scissors

We last left off with my pre-dress-shopping neuroses, I was convinced that the world was going to end, planets were going to crush me, and all that jazz.

We had two appointments scheduled for the first day of dress shopping, and I was prepared. I had on no makeup, as not to get any on the dresses, as well as my proper undergarments, so that I didn’t flash the whole world.

The Dress: It Begins : wedding undergarments wedding dress Underoo underoo

As a quick sidebar, I’d like to HIGHLY recommend wearing the undergarments I wore for dress shopping– the Spanx Hide & Sleek Hi-Rise Panty (or any other Spanx!), as well as a nude strapless bra. This way, while the attendant is stripping you drown and putting you into dress after dress, it just feels like you’re wearing a conservative swimsuit. Win!

Anyway, back to the story!

One thing that I started researching pretty early on was camera-friendly makeup and skincare. I don’t think it’s any secret that I love photography, and I wanted us to have bananas shots of ourselves. Some of my favorite inspiration photos were super-close-up shots of couples, and if those shots were going to happen for us, I needed to shape my skin up first, as well as figure out what worked the best for me makeup-wise.

Wedding Wows* : wedding vows Wedding0129 weddingvows

Last week, we (finally) booked our officiant, so of course I’ve had wedding vows on the brain.

I’m on the more traditional wedding vow team for a few reasons:

  1. I’ve always liked the traditional ones. I find comfort in the fact that these words have been said over and over by so many couples throughout the years. It is familiar to most, and gives me comfort. (Even if the divorce rate is ridiculous in this country, leave me alone, I can still use this reasoning.)

“Is that what that was? I thought it was feathers.”

“No, it was a bird.”

“It was beautiful!”

I think this was the movie that spawned 1,000 giant bridal headpieces. True, I wasn’t in the bridal-research-wedding-a-palooza that I am in now, but I never really noticed that much hub-bub about giant feather or floral headpieces before this.

Honoring My Grandmothers

January 14th, 2010 @ 8:13 am by Mrs. Scissors

Since I have done a lot of research on German wedding traditions, I thought it was appropriate to search for traditions from the South. I am nowhere near finished compiling them, but I just stumbled upon one that makes my heart ache.

“A deep connection with family, especially symbolically, then continues through the wedding. The classic Southern bride wants to honor her family with special remembrances such as incorporating flowers that her grandmother had chosen for her own bouquet.” (source)

I started tearing up almost immediately after reading that. Neither of my grandmothers will be able to attend the wedding. My paternal grandmother passed away in 2004 from pancreatic cancer, and my maternal grandmother has very advanced Alzheimer’s. I’ve begged that she be able to come, but it’s not possible given her health condition. The fact that neither will be there is a fact that is hard for me to stomach, especially given that my maternal grandmother is still alive.

That is why this tradition struck me so significantly. I need and want to honor both of them, and thought that having one flower for each that they used in their bouquets in my bouquet would be a wonderful way to honor them.

Now here comes a roadblock–
