Hair Revisited

April 27th, 2012 @ 2:08 pm by Miss Scone

Hello hive! Remember how we talked about the Hairy Situations? Well, I owe you a follow up!

At 1.5 weeks I lost all hope that using only baking soda and vinegar was really going to help my hairs. So I tweaked the program. Every other day I am using Dr. Bronner’s Magic All-One on my scalp only and conditioning the whole head.

Mixed Blessings

April 26th, 2012 @ 5:53 am by Miss Scone

Exactly one week after I learned that I would be Miss Scone, I lost my job. It wasn’t necessarily a pretty losing of the job, and Sweetie Scone and I were not excited for what it would mean financially… But some of the best changes have come out of it.

When I told Sweetie Scone that I lost my job she was 100% supportive and encouraged me to really think about my career path, what would make me happy, and what made sense.

I.have.never.felt.so.loved.in.my.life. I have been working so long the AARP and Social Security think I am nearing retirement… for me working is tied very closely to my personal happiness. The few weeks in my life I have spent not working, I have generally been a hot mess. Sweetie Scone’s support and encouragement put everything in a different light.

Hairy Situations

April 4th, 2012 @ 11:16 am by Miss Scone

This is a story about my hair…

As long as I can remember I have had relatively greasy hair. My parents raised me with the “squeaky clean” philosophy and I have to admit when my hair wasn’t squeaky, it didn’t look so fresh and so clean. The head of hair I was given is fine but there is a fair amount of it (supposedly a lot of it because stylists always seem a little shocked at the quantity after they give it a once over). It is not the fastest growing hair on earth, but it has always been healthy as a horse. Oooh, and I have been shampooing my hair daily since I was at least six.

For the last three years I have been growing my hairs out because I, 100%, want it up for the wedding. It can’t hold many styles for extended periods of time so I knew immediately that it would be headed up up up… It has successfully grown grown grown (bringing along my first gray hair with it…)

Up until I was 28 ish I didn’t condition, EVER. I never saw the need; my stylists always said my hair was like virgin hair and I could easily go 6 months without trimming my hair. And then a switch was flipped and my hair needed conditioning everyday. It would still get uber greasy if it wasn’t washed daily bit it had to have the moisture too…

A few years before that I noticed something else: an elephant in the room. Flaky scalp/dandruff/yuck…

E-Pic-spiration

March 26th, 2012 @ 2:41 pm by Miss Scone

Our photography package includes engagement pictures. Our photographer was really trying to make it to California for our e-pics but our schedules didn’t line up. With reality setting in, we realized that we needed to squeeze e-pics into our last Kansas City planning trip.

Thus the hunt for e-pic inspiration began…

Thankfully, one of my friends from college had posted some of her super fabulous engagement pictures on Facebook. Between her pictures and some inspiration from our photographer I was starting to get excited about engagement pics.

Ideas are Everywhere

March 15th, 2012 @ 8:16 am by Miss Scone

We find inspiration in the most random places. One of the best ones happened at our FAVORITE breakfast place (did I yell that?). The Fremont Diner. Seriously, on nice days we bring the pup and we wait anxiously for an outdoor table (on cold days we bundle up and happily waltz over to an outdoor table) and some mmmmlicious grub (breakfast or lunch only)…If you are in the Napa/Sonoma area pull over when you see this sign, you won’t be disappointed…

OK, but this isn’t really about our favorite place for breakfast, this is about water jugs…yup you read that right…

Good Ol’ Reality

March 14th, 2012 @ 7:22 am by Miss Scone

On Sunday night, Sweetie Scone and I were chatting over dinner about our timeline and the wedding projects that needed to get done…

I was feeling like we had ample time to leisurely finish off our DIY projects leaving us with only a few details to wrap up when we got in town for the wedding…

Ummmm, I had a come to Jesus moment. Sweetie Scone very nicely reminded me that we needed to get on it like it was our job because we are approaching the four-month mark and soon after that, the 100-day mark. Those two markers might make me pee my pants.

Currently we have:

  • half finished hangy things (super technical term)
  • half finished seating cards (the last step will be done in Kansas City)
  • poster boards that need painting
  • invitations that need to be designed and mailed in the next few weeks!!!!!!!! (secretly freaking out on this one)
  • a backdrop that needs to be made
  • a dry run on the paper flowers we are going to construct in KC
  • making the bases for the paper flowers
  • putting together our out of town bags
  • wrapping up kids’ entertainment fun
  • designing and assembling our programs
  • and rounding a whole bunch more corners
  • decide how to guest book and then pull it together

Would you like to see some of the progress?

One Foot, Two Foot

March 6th, 2012 @ 12:00 pm by Miss Scone

Green foot, purple foot!

A good year and a half ago I was browsing through a blog and I saw something that I couldn’t resist…seriously, I just about lost my shiz…

I knew in an instant THOSE WOULD BE MINE!!! Seriously, within hours I had shared them with everyone that was anyone (including the girls in the office), and everyone agreed. They had to be mine…

With much determination I hunted through 6pm.com, shoes.com, endless.com, Zappos.com… and I was starting to lose hope. There was maybe a pair or two left out there, but they were in much much smaller sizes. So, I turned to my last resort: Amazon, of course. Lo and behold I got the absolute last pair that had any chance of fitting (a 9.5) and I hoped and prayed that I would get lucky. They were supposed to arrive the week of Thanksgiving so I had them sent to my parents’ house.

Hunting for a Location

March 5th, 2012 @ 12:01 pm by Miss Scone

We don’t really need anywhere to actually have the ceremony right? For more than a year we’ve had a reception venue but not a ceremony site…a perplexing issue. Here is the story of our adventure…

We were on a hunt for an outdoor ceremony location that would be relatively easy for elderly people to access, close to our reception venue, and true to my sentimental ways had some meaning. When we drove up to Boulevard we noticed a great grassy knoll behind their facility, we figured it would be a great solution (added bonus it faced “my last name” street). We asked and pleaded a little but it is not an area available to use, rent, or otherwise get hitched on…I was bummed. So we moved onto the parks:

* Roanoke Park: It would need some work but definitely a contender. The community center could serve as the rain plan…

About Miss Scone

Oh Pinterest how I love thee! Yes, this is an open love letter to Pinterest and my continuing search for inspiration because a girl can never have enough right?

Remember our first draft? I will let a little secret out of the bag, it sucks when you found an image 12 months ago and now you want to research it more (or need to photo credit it) and all of a sudden you can’t find it to save your life…

Pinterest to the rescue!!!If you aren’t familiar with the wonders of Pinterest—here is the scoop. Essentially it is an online storage board for any online resource (images, YouTube clips, recipes, lists, quotes, workouts, articles, anything your heart desires that is on the web). You can create files to organize your pins. You can search through what other people are pinning, you can follow pinners, you can share what you are pinning, or you can just like something so you can track it down again (though not as easy to organize)… And the best part, if it has been pinned properly then you only need to click on the image and it will take you back to the original post/website.

Seriously, I have gone back through our original inspiration points to save them/pin them in Pinterest. I might continuously search blogs for new inspiration on a daily basis, pinning that inspiration has lead to some of my best finds. It also means I no longer have to cross my fingers and toes in hopes that I can find something again.

Here is a sneak peek into the Pinterest Inspired Projects coming your way via the Scones:

A New Four-Legged Love

February 28th, 2012 @ 4:49 pm by Miss Scone

For Christmas, Sweetie Scone gave me a kitty (a stuffed one) to represent the life sized bundle of joy we would add to our mini family. I am a cat and dog person (we always had one of each growing up) and I have been pining for a little kitty to add into the mix. We didn’t get a kitten right away because it wasn’t really the season (and while we are full proponents of adopted an older animal we wanted a kitty that could grow up loving a pup). So a few weeks later a friend found a sweet little thing in her garage and we got to pick her up on Valentine’s Day!

Valentine’s Day is not usually something we celebrate much, our dating anniversary is right before so we celebrate that. But I guess now it can be the day we celebrate adopting our sweet/sassy little kitten!

Roots

February 24th, 2012 @ 6:04 am by Miss Scone

Sweetie Scone is firmly from Kansas Cityl most of her family is still in the area. On my first trip to meet Sweetie Scone’s parents we were speeding down the freeway and I saw MY LAST NAME on an exit. My last name is not really common, this is not something that happens everyday. I knew that my family had passed through KC on the trip West but I never really gave much thought to it. Passing that sign started the wheels turning in my head…

I talked a little about our decision to have the wedding in Kansas City here, but didn’t spend much time talking about the our roots.

Want to know something ironic? The backside of our venue is on the street with my family name. Our engagement pictures were taken in “Scone Park” (well not really but my last name + park :) … We have a few surprises that incorporate the park, and the ceremony is just down the street…

Up for a Good Challenge…

February 23rd, 2012 @ 2:03 pm by Miss Scone

In an effort to provide full disclosure, I started to train for a half marathon (my first!) during the later part of 2011. Well, I failed to do any form of training from December 12th–January 13th, true story.

So I am back on the horse and with 12 weeks to train I am going couch-to-half-marathon…with a plan. The first two weeks I am rebuilding my aerobic capacities by varying a couple of different shorter routes and just getting out there. I am hoping to alternate my focus: one run I will focus on increasing the distance, and the next run I will focus on improving the time. Mixing runs in with cross training and stretching will hopefully provide enough variety for my muscles and for my short attention span. After the first couple of weeks I will follow a more traditional half-marathon training schedule.

Try It On, Try It On

February 23rd, 2012 @ 6:00 am by Miss Scone

When I was tracking down somewhere to try on dresses from Alyne, it was right after their first line was released; they did not have many showrooms and I wasn’t quite to the dress stage, so I waited.

By the time my mom and I were ready to check out styles, there were two feasible towns where I could try on Alyne dresses: Fresno, California and Portland, Oregon. My mom has to go to Fresno often enough for work (and I used to), and it is an easy enough drive from my house. Thing is, neither of us really enjoys the drive. And I really was hoping to include my grandma in the dress process. My parents already had a long trip to the Portland area planned for my grandma’s birthday (she lives an hour away), so I bought a flight and met them up there. I set up appointments with two bridal boutiques, Silver Lining Couture and AniA Collection. I emailed the dress shops the different styles I was interested in, and they indicated they had “similar styles” but not the ones I was specifically interested in. Both boutiques have a no-picture policy (booo), so we had to come up with a plan of action to remember details.

We had made a plan to pick up my grandma and drive her up to the appointments, have a little lunch, and then bring her back home. The day of, she called and said that she just didn’t have the energy to come up. This fell into the upsetting category. The day before she had driven up to my uncle’s house (just outside of Portland) for dinner, but that tired her out. (Really it had more to do with her not wanting to leave my step-grandpa at home for the day.) While we are hoping that she will be able to make it to our wedding, I also wanted to make sure she was involved in the wedding planning. She is not a spring chicken and has had several major medical issues that still impact her life, so while she still makes pretty significant trips there is no guarantee she will be present. So this last-minute cancellation hurt, and it also hurt my mom.
