If you are still hunting for a honeymoon location, and if you remember that smash hit (ie. I watched it everyday after school) educational kid’s game show Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego, have I got a mission for you!

Like many other brides (and bees), choosing a colour scheme has been difficult, to say the least. I’ve always felt a certain fondness for most, if not all of the crayons in my 52- deluxe crayola crayon pack. Except for orange. And burnt sienna. And peach. I digress. Anyway, I’ve always tried to be impartial to my crumbly wax comrades, so having to pick a favorite or three was heartwrenching.

Like a good kiss, ballerina length wedding dresses, like these ones made by Stephanie Jones and Candy Anthony, make me weak in the knees. SO perfect for an informal wedding - like a garden party, or a quickie marriage at City Hall. The best bouquets for these dresses would be small nosegays or posies, or even a small prayerbook or a heirloom hankie. Pair with short gloves, and top with a wee hat and a birdcage veil - Sweet!

Despite their frothy gloriousness, vintage dresses have several disadvantages. The most glaring one is that it is very difficult to match your bridesmaids if their dresses are all one-of-a-kind finds. Another downer is that vintage dresses come in vintage sizes - and despite the fact that my bridesmaids are all far from being “large”, they’re just too big for vintage sizes - I don’t know about yours, but none of my bridesmaids have a 21″ waist!
So, after many pleasant hours spent drooling over gowns at Vintageous and it’s kin, I decided to look for dresses that echoed that 1950’s, tiny waist, flared skirt silhouette. The contenders:

Seems like a simple enough equation, but then again, it’s been years since I’ve needed algebra, so maybe my mad math skills are rusty. That MUST be the reason, because I can’t find my dream shoes anywhere.

At first, the idea of running away to get married, to somewhere not only far away, but far away enough to be warm and DRY, was very appealing.
Mr. Shortcake and I met at and both went to the University of British Columbia, where the average October - April day is spent sloshing through the rain, shivering in your wet, seasonally-inappropriate clothes during class until you can’t stand it any longer, then sloshing back to your room, changing, and repeating the cycle ad infinitum.

It was another grey and humdrum day when I became a bride-to-be. I would like to say it was a “dark and stormy night,” but it really wasn’t an anything sort of day, weather wise. It was grey, and would have been utterly depressing except for the fact that it was Mr. Shortcake’s birthday!
Hooray for birthdays! Boo for realizing you’re that much closer to being “OLD”!
We didn’t have anything planned, really. He came over, we set up a joint bank account online in preparation for our moving in together, and generally acted as if we were retired 70 year olds with no energy. We were lazing on the bed together, exhausted from all that mouse-clicking and staring at the ceiling, when suddenly Mr. Shortcake asked,
“Where’s your dad?”
That was out of the blue, but suddenly I knew just what was going on…he wanted to ask myfather for permissionto marry me!

…With the success of Dior’s “new look,” Paris couturiers resumed operation and once again became the center for international fashion trends. Now that the usage of fabric had no constraints, The full, full and fuller skirt of the “new look” continued to gain popularity. Rounded and soft shoulders, an almost pinched waist, a pointed bosom and spike heels were the hallmarks of 50’s Bridal wear. The hourglass effect was further emphasized with crinolines and hoop skirts. It was at this time that the metal zipper moved to the wearer’s back, making the zip up a two person chore. Some say that after the success of the 1951 film, “A Place in the Sun,” the costuming of Edith Head epitomized the look that American women craved, exemplified to perfection by the film’s star, Elizabeth Taylor… (source)
