Our Save the Dates are finally complete and as far as I know have been received by almost everyone, so I can finally share all the pictures. I bought a rose clipart file from clipart.com and used Adobe Illustrator to change it to a light green color. Then I flipped and turned the graphic and placed different parts of it around the square. That’s all of them above, waiting to be stuffed and sent.
Before I began trying on wedding dresses, I was convinced I wasn’t a veil type of girl. Then at the first bridal salon I went to they put a veil on my head and I had my first “I am a bride” feeling. Sold and sold. And when I started seeing pictures like this, I knew that I wanted a long one:

I am painfully clueless about certain aspects of wedding planning, and this week I was lucky enough to stumble upon another arena of which I have basically no knowledge…. wedding cakes. I’ll start by saying that I love cake. I might actually consider cake one of my favorite foods. So I was really excited to start interviewing bakers, and tasting and discussing their creations for what will possibly be the most special cake I’ll ever order. I don’t want anything overly elaborate, most likely something like this (but with only three tiers and fresh flowers):

I promise that someday I will stop talking about fabric, but today is not that day! Once I made the decision to keep the damask fabric, I knew that I wanted to incorporate parts of it into more than just the runners, but I really wanted just a portion of the pattern. A “single damask,” if you will. So I put a piece of fabric on our scanner to see what would happen. Then I put the image into Illustrator and used the live trace feature, and after a little tweaking came up with this:

My wedding shoe dilemma is two fold - Mr. Sundae is only a few inches taller than me and we’re having the ceremony outdoors. I really didn’t want to wear flats because (I am aware this might sound strange) I feel like I walk a little different in heels, even if they are small ones. But almost all of the low heeled shoes I found were kitten heels, which means I will most definitely be sinking in the grass when attempting to walk down the aisle. I tested a few out:

After we decided on the color scheme (read: I was threatened by loved ones to stop talking incessantly about color combinations), I knew that I really wanted some black & white damask table runners. Said loved ones would live to regret their pushing because the end result involves manual labor, but alas. My Mom and I went all over looking for either actual runners or fabric to make our own, and when we came up empty handed we turned to the internet and found this:

It was nearly impossible for me to commit to a color scheme. Whenever I would see pictures from a wedding that I loved I would think, “Yes! I’ll do that” only to see another one a few minutes later and completely change my mind. There are just so many ideas and gorgeous color combinations out there! Since we’ll be near a lake I originally thought I would go with a nautical theme, something like this:

When we signed the contract with The Abbey we intended on having the ceremony in this little gazebo on the bay. I actually wasn’t wild about the gazebo but it sounded so easy to have the ceremony and reception in one place. Then I started asking about timing and found out that not only was another wedding booked for the indoor ballroom that day (not a huge deal, but annoying that it hadn’t been mentioned), they were also having the ceremony in the outdoor gazebo. I really wanted a sunset ceremony, and in September in Wisconsin that’s around 6pm. The other couple is having their ceremony at 6pm.
I’ll admit, I was so excited about finding a tent that met our criteria, I didn’t really look long and hard at the inside. We walked through it I snapped a few pictures, thought it had a lot of potential and that it would look completely different when it was decorated. Then when I was interviewing photographers I saw photos of a reception in our exact tent…and I went into a blind panic. It looked exactly like the picture above but with a few tables and someone in a white dress! I turned to google and quickly realized that I had booked myself a frame tent and the images that lived in my head were all of tension tent, like this (Martha describes the different types of tents here):
Approximately 37 seconds after Mr. Sundae popped the question, I started rattling off lists of potential venues and locations (I remind you, we’ve been together for 9 years, I’ve had a lot of time to think). We briefly tossed around the idea of a destination wedding but ultimately ruled it out due to some family concerns on his side of things. I’ve secretly been thinking about getting married in Lake Geneva for years and it’s almost a perfect substitution for a destination wedding. Far enough away that 90% of our guests will make a weekend out of it but close enough to drive up on weekends to meet with vendors, etc. It’s a special place for us because Mr. Sundae spent nearly every summer of his childhood there and we’ve made countless memories at the lake while we’ve been dating. Needless to say, Mr. Sundae lit up at the suggestion, and that was that.
Two weekends later I had set up meetings with 6 potential venues and we made the trip up to the lake. I won’t bore you with the details of each one we saw (unless you do actually want to know, of course, just tell me) but seconds after walking into The Abbey Resort I knew that it was our place. I’ve been dreaming about a reception in a big white tent since I first saw Father of The Bride, so that was my main criteria when looking at potential locations. One place explained that their tent had no sides and a concrete floor, another was located just behind a driving range in which they “couldn’t guarantee” people wouldn’t be golfing. I can’t imagine anything more romantic than saying “I do” in the middle of someone’s backswing.
I am Miss Sundae! I’ve been a loyal Weddingbee reader since my friend (and now bridesmaid) passed along the addiction while planning her own wedding, and I am excited and honored to be a part of the hive.
Mr. Sundae and I met in college and have been in each other’s lives ever since. There have been ups and downs, break-ups, long distances, and a lot of growing up but we made it to the other side. We’ve been sharing a condo in the city for the past two years with our dog Lola (if raising a dog is any indication one’s parenting skills, it’s possible we should reconsider children).
Mr. S popped the question on July 20th with candlelight and champagne on the balcony of our condo. He got down on one knee and said some of the most wonderful things I’ve ever heard, most of which I immediately forgot in all the excitement and commotion. The set-up:

(He’ll kill me for this, but I need to draw your attention to the “tablecloth.” At the last minute Mr. S decided that he should use one to cover our little mosaic table, and all he came up with was a pillowcase.)
