About Miss Sweet Cream

I told you about how I love the super special places people sometimes pick out for the engagement sesh. And then I divulged the setting for ours. But before we bought our tickets for the ferris wheel and got a sugar high from all of the cotton candy, our uhhhmazing photographer Brett Martelli decided that it was worth a trip to the spot where we spent time while we shared puppy love—and the spot Mr. Sweets proposed—Bolton Mansion, the old mansion between our two neighborhoods growing up where we sledded during the winter and hung out on bikes in the summer.

We had so much stinkin’ fun with Brett. I was super nervous about the whole idea of cheesin’ for the camera, but that quickly went out the window and I totally forgot all about it and just had fun.

Brett put up with my box of vintage props and me thinking—I mean knowing—that I could work it for the camera from watchin’ a lot of America’s Next Top Model. He totally captured us having a blast…not to mention, he himself was so much fun to work with…

And just when I thought that was enough, Brett completely blew me away with some of his teasers. I had some prep I wanted to share before unveiling these beauts…but that was before I saw them. The teasers are so great, I could wait to show the hive.

About Miss Sweet Cream

We love all of our cakes that we are having at the wedding and seriously cannot wait to dive in to dessert time. Whatever our friends and family pick—peanut butter, or fruited bliss, or pound cake with raspberry preserves and delicious whipped cream cheese goodness—we know it will bring delicious delight to our guests’ taste buds!

But one thing is a strong possibility. With all that cake there is bound to be leftovers.

I gave this some thought and was thinking about labeling gable boxes or getting adorable little bags for guests to take home sweet, sweet goodness from our big day.

But something a whole lot easier came into the picture when Mama Sweet Cream asked the local grocery store’s bakery counter where they got their little plastic containers that contain the store’s yummy single servings of cake.

About Miss Sweet Cream

I know that some sweet bubbly and celebrations go hand and hand. I get it, I really do.

But wedding after wedding that I go to I see champagne go to waste since everyone doesn’t partake in the goodness of the bubbly. And to tell you the truth, I think that is blasphemy. I personally love me some sparkly wine. But then again there really there is a never any kind of wine that I turn my back on.

But Mr. Sweets isn’t exactly into champagne. He likes his wine the sweet side, just like his women I guess… ;)

Since we were having our wedding at a winery, we had to partake in their wine choices only, which meant that the sweet bubbly we had to get from them would cost a pretty penny. And with cost, the fear of champagne waste and Mr. Sweets’ sweet palate against us, I wanted to figure out another option.

No worries—besides champagne I actually love vintage bottles.

Such pretty bottles…

About Miss Sweet Cream

While the hunt to find the perfect supper for our laid-back wedding left our taste buds missing the “dating stages” of caterer-hunting, we thought that at least we have cake to taste. Lots and lots of it.

That is until I started calling around for prices of wedding cake.

I still cannot believe that prices that some places can charge for just one piece! There was complete sticker shot when you multiplied that by the number of guests we approximated that we would have. And while I am sure that those cakes are absolutely delicious and unbelievably beautiful, our pockets aren’t bottomless & we are pretty wise to know that money doesn’t grow on trees.

Our cake inspiration was pretty simple. I mean, I am by no means a cake decorator, but little dots can’t be that hard right? We wanted something that was simple and… well instead of trying to paint a picture with words let me just, well, show you what I was sugary sweets had me drooling:

About Miss Sweet Cream

So dear hive, I’ve shared with you about some accessories that are a must for me on the big day. But what about my, sweet, sweet Mister?

I told you that we nailed down a general idea of just what he and his guys will show up in on the big day… but I forgot to mention one thing. Well, Mr. Sweets…he likes his accessories manly!

Mr. Sweets is a sucker for watches, cologne, sunglasses, (baseball) hats (that he collects like a kid collects baseball cards!), Nikes, Phillies t-shirts, retro sports jerseys… OK, well maybe some of those aren’t accessories, although they are manly, manly things—but you get the idea.

So, Mr. Sweets has yet to decide on his exact attire for the big day (except that it will be a charcoal grey suit of some kind). But like me, he also loves accessorizing finding things to go with his clothes.

So he thought that these cuff links were pretty darn cool, and just like that, we ordered them!

About Miss Sweet Cream

I scoured the internet looking for inspiration for the most-important-thing-I-will-ever-wear (AKA: The Wedding Dress), ordered it, and crossed it off the list. (OK. Maybe it wasn’t that simple. But it is crossed off!)

But what about the Mister?!

Let me start off by saying that Mr. Sweet Cream isn’t the type of guy who needs help in the dressing-himself department. He is not a guy who will show up all wrinkly in ripped clothing to a family party, and he actually does get excited when we have a little cash to treat ourselves to some new duds.

So I was super excited that he was on the same page as me when it came down to wearing gray on our wedding day. (Mr. Sweet Cream can be very decisive about his wardrobe choices, so I surely thought that he would insist on an all black look for whatever reason.) Specifically, Mr. Sweets wants to wear “charcoal gray.” (I told you he’s decisive!)

He also liked the idea of forgoing the tux and having a very cool suit instead. I mean, do BBQ and fancy tuxedos go together? Well, I guess they can if we wanted them to. It’s our day, right?

But Mr. Sweets likes the suit idea (phew!)…so here are some of the ones that he’s been digging:

About Miss Sweet Cream

I teased you with engagement sessions in meaningful, special places, like cooking classes, fishing holes, and garden plots. And I mentioned that I almost threw our big idea into the can after seeing the super, super amazing camping shots.

You’re probably thinking: OK, Sweet Cream! What’s this big idea anyway??

Well, hive…I might have mentioned the Sweet Creams’ history that started in grade school, so we decided to take it back there…yes, way back there.

Ever since the beginning of time (OK. Maybe I am exaggerating just a little. It was 1956 to be exact.), our little Catholic parish has held the biggest fair in town. People would get super excited to go ride the rides, eat cotton candy until they were ready to be sick, and hang out with their pals. During the summers of the late 1990s, Mr. Sweets and I were no exception to this rule. We just loved our town’s fair.

June 24th, 2011 @ 9:26 am by Miss Sweet Cream

I must say that I absolutely am infatuated with engagement photos. Maybe even more so than snapshots of the couple on the big day.

Personalities stand out, individual styles shine, and sometimes you really can catch a glimpse of the energy, love, and feelings that these two people have for one another.

After booking our oh-so-amazing photographer, Brett Martelli, we started to think about where the heck we would have our engagement pics shot. Brett suggested something that was “us” and, to tell you the truth, a plethora of ideas came to mind. With my mind blurry with remembrance from engagement-picture settings of couples gone before us and posted in the blogosphere, I knew it should be a locale that meant something to us…

Like some of these crazy-adorable couples…

About Miss Sweet Cream

Before I even thought about a dream wedding cake, I knew one thing.

There just had to be a vintage wedding cake topper on top.

I envy those brides who use their grandmothers’ cake toppers. You can just imagine your grandma many, many years earlier in your very shoes: a fresh new bride with her one honey on her super-special day—your parents and you just a twinkle in her eye.

Well, I didn’t necessarily have the luxury of using Grandmom Sweet Cream’s cake topper…I don’t even think that she had one in her 1940s wedding…or maybe she did. My super-sweet seasoned grandmom (I have forever promised that I would never tell anyone her age) can’t seem to remember. But she did let me know if she does have one it’s mine!

But I do have access to adopting someone else’s grandmom’s topper…maybe not someone I know…just someone…out there. You may or may not remember that I’m a fool for “antiques.”

Just look at the batch of exquisite, charming bride & groom figures that could grace the top of one of the most special sweets that may ever hit your spot.

About Miss Sweet Cream

After we got engaged, but before we starting talking about registering, we just knew there was one place that we couldn’t wait to tackle head on with a scanning gun: Lowe’s.

Being a bad modern couple who bought their house prior to tying the knot, we frequent home-improvement stores on the weekends and get lost in them—and lost from each other—as we gaze at paint, tools, planters, electrical boxes, sheet rock, and gardening supplies.

We were giddy with the excitement of unwrapping things that we desperately need as we hammer, revamp, and refinish our way through our adorable 1950s dream house.

Well…as many of you bees know, Lowe’s and Home Depot both discontinued their registries to the disappointment and outrage of brides- and grooms-to-be across the country. Trust me. Just Google “Lowe’s” and “registry.”

After digging and digging, I wound up finding this:

About Miss Sweet Cream

I Wanna Dance with Somebody

June 22nd, 2011 @ 9:16 am by Miss Sweet Cream

A wise man (AKA Dave Barry) once said, “Nobody cares if you can’t dance well. Just get up and dance.” I love that quote. I want each and every guest to know that this what I hope they would know about the evening. Maybe I should put that on a sign. (Seriously. That is such a good idea. Note to self: add this to “to do” list.)

So besides “The Chicken Dance,” “The Bunny Hop,” “The Conga Line,” or “Cotton Eyed Joe,” what could have guests shaking their tail feathers all night long?

Obviously it’s the music.

When people hear a song that they just love, they get up and dance. Trust me. I’ve seen it happen when I requested (the great) Whitney Houston’s “How Will I Know” at a local bar that had an empty dance floor.

I know that the musical-goddess trinity of Rhianna, Gaga, and Britney are known to get everyone dancing…but I’m kinda leaning toward that being a generational thing and can’t really picture FMIL Sweet Cream getting down to “S&M.” (She definitely could, I just don’t know if she would!)

I do know that it is the year 2011. But I do also know my guest list. We have such a diverse group of ages, backgrounds, and musical tastes. I would just like to put all of them in a big pot and let them simmer until they are perfectly blended, like the flavors of a really, really good chili.

Danger Mouse created The Grey Album by mixing Jay Z’s Black Album with the Beatles’ White Album and came up with something that I think is amazing. (Video via YouTube)

About Miss Sweet Cream

Fiction sometimes has a way of weaving into reality. Culturally speaking, the fake world of movies has kick-started major trends in the real world. A young Sweet Cream vaguely remembers what Flashdance did to the ’80s. After Alicia Silverstone jumped off that cliff with her navel pierced, she had girls everywhere running to get a pair of knee highs and holding up their fingers telling their parents, “Whatever!” after Clueless hit the big screen. And then there’s Sex and the City. I realize that the small-screen version was first (and better?), but starting trends? Inspiration? Need I say more?

I have always been a sucker for romance, fashion, and the gorgeous cinematic enjoyment of the silver screen. And while I wasn’t a girl who dreamed of her big day since she was a little girl, for one reason or another, before there was a ring on my finger, there were some big-screen brides who made my non-wedding-swooner self, well…swoon.

That’s why the mister and I bought a 1950s house on a charming street not too far from our childhood stompin’ grounds. This could also be the reason why our hometown is the scene where we are planning our super sweet, totally charming, BBQ-for-supper wedding that I never knew I always wanted. I DIE over DIY projects and live for vintage, heartfelt inspiration. I obsess over all things mid-century (from forks to furniture). Love is… cartoons and flea markets, and I am known to whip up a mean banana cream pie. I met the Mr. in grade school and after that boy took me for a spin on the handle bars of his BMX, I knew that things would never be the same again. Besides lovin’ my Mr., I also love to plan, sew and create, and that’s just what I’m doing as I navigate through the details, creating a laid-back day that oozes charm; one that will go down in (at least our) history as the Best. Fly Me to the ‘Moon: Part II

June 21st, 2011 @ 8:16 am by Miss Sweet Cream

As I had previously mentioned, an October wedding had us connecting to TripAdvisor, Frommer’s, and The Travel Channel a heck of a lot more than normal to do digging about where we’d enjoy each other’s company and frolic in the surf on our honeymoon…during hurricane season.

We crossed off options due to cost, travel time, and the desire for something uber “tropical.”

After Cabo was nixed, I plead my case to Mr. Sweet Cream for a location that I just knew he would love. Thanks to some handy research, pictures of beautiful water (and fishing!), and some fellow bees on the message boards, we picked our ’moon locale.

For those bees out there who like a little bit of guessing, here are some clues for you: Dutch is the official language, the currency is the florin, and the average temperature is 81 degrees…

Fly Me to the ‘Moon: Part I

June 20th, 2011 @ 2:40 pm by Miss Sweet Cream

Of course a little post-wedding vacay seems like a good idea after all the work that is done preparing for the walk down the aisle…but I was dying to know who thought of this marvelous idea of a brand new couple getting whisked away to a locale, whether local or exotic, near or far…

For bees who were even a slight bit curious, let me share.

It turns out that there are a couple different stories circulating about how the honeymoon came to be.

Some say that back in the day in Europe, for a month’s time, the newly married couple would drink a little vino, known as mead, made from fermented honey. Some even say that this would help with fertility…I guess honey used to be thought of like that. Who knew?

Later, grooms used to capture—yes, you read that right—their brides for a period of one month and take them into hiding. Even though the groom assured the family she’d be OK, sometimes her friends and fam would go out looking for her to bring home. It was the husband’s hope that within one month’s time his bride would be knocked up before the bride’s family found them.
