Over the past year and a half I have been able to lend my sewing skills to a few brides that I am very close to. One bride in particular was Miss K, who had a beautiful outdoor wedding last September.
The veil:
Miss K wanted a simple tulle veil, which I was happy to make for her! A tutorial will be coming soon! Here’s the view from the front:

The veil from the back (It was a bit windy!):

Mr. Taffy and I just signed up for dance classes with the Ann Arbor community education and recreation program!
We had been talking about signing up for dance lessons in preparation for the wedding, but we weren’t sure which type of dance to try or where to take lessons. After pouring over the class options in the Ann Arbor rec mailing, we did some hilarious research on YouTube, dance by dance. I am leaning toward the cha cha, after seeing some fun vintage clips on YouTube, and after seeing an episode of Mad Men. Mr. T seemed a little overwhelmed and was quite frightened by some of the YouTube footage (namely the fox trot), but taking lessons was his idea, so he’s willing to try it all.
After much debate, we decided to sign up for the generic “Wedding Dance” class, where they will touch on a variety of dances, including:

Note: I’ve added larger pictures to my bolero post from yesterday.
When the time came for ring shopping, Mr. Taffy really wanted to find a conflict free diamond, so he went to Austin & Warburton in Ann Arbor. He chose a beautiful conflict free brilliant cut stone, and wanted to design the rest of the ring, but wasn’t quite sure what to do about the setting. He also didn’t know my ring size (I don’t wear a lot of jewelry). The jeweler recommended that he tie a string around my finger while I was sleeping, then bring the string into the store for measurement. Mr. Taffy was not about to try such a stunt, thank goodness… I can only imagine him trying to tie a string around my finger in the middle of the night. I talk in my sleep and probably would have scared the wits out of him!
Shortly after, I became involved in the ring process. ![]()

I went to Mr. Taffy’s apartment one Friday night in May. I was very hungry, and asked him as soon as I arrived where he wanted to have dinner.
He seemed really busy, and told me that he had to finish washing the dishes before we could go eat. I found it odd that there weren’t any dishes in the sink, and that he was enthusiastically scrubbing a plastic spinach container over and over.
I sat on the couch and listened to the record that Mr. T had put on, waiting for him to finish. Mr. Taffy seemed nervous, and after the song ended, asked me to flip the record over while he “finished the dishes”.
I got up to turn the record over and saw this:

“Add a memorable touch to your wedding with unique favors that match your theme.”
I knew that I would be ready to help my friend Miss J with any sewing help for her wedding this summer. I had just been laid off, and although I was job searching and starting to think about my own wedding planning, I had quite a bit of free time on my hands (no pun intended!).
Miss J had two projects that she asked me to do. The first was to make a little lace bolero jacket to wear over her wedding dress. The inspiration:

A cute black lace jacket that she wore to a friend’s wedding last summer. I set out to create a similar feeling jacket, but bridal style.
The second project was initially to make a detachable train from material taken from her mother’s wedding gown from the late 1960’s.

A little bit about our life and our locations before we met:
After high school, Mr. Taffy went to the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn to study industrial design. After finishing, he came back to Michigan and started working. At first he lived in various northern Detroit suburbs, but then settled in Ann Arbor after taking a new job.
I went to school at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where I studied photography, life drawing, and design. I loved living in Ann Arbor. Once I was halfway through college, I realized that I wanted to study fashion design. U of M did not have a fashion program, but the assistant dean in the art school allowed me to take several independent study courses with her that helped me explore the subject and build up my portfolio for fashion school. At that time, I taught myself to sew.
After graduating from U of M, I was accepted at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York.

I am thrilled and honored to join the hive!
I am a color and materials designer (freshly laid off, thanks to the auto industry), who is crazy about sewing, cooking, dancing, and making anything I can dream up. So far, planning our wedding is a lot like designing a car and seeing it into production. Researching design inspiration, choosing vendors, working with budgets, creating deadlines… all in all, a lot of work! The wedding itself, like a car, is made up of what seems like a million parts and comes together with the help of many, many people. I can’t wait until we get to the day of production!
As far as my icon, taffy was an obvious choice for me. I love anything sweet, especially candy, ice cream and sugary cereal (much to Mr. Taffy’s dismay). He had never even heard of Cookie Crisp or Cocoa Puffs until we started dating!
I thoroughly enjoy reading all of your posts, and am very excited to share my wedding planning projects, hopes and DIY accomplishments with you! Thank you so much for having me. ![]()
