OK, my maturity level seems to be dropping with every wedding task I complete. Seeing as how I’ll never get to make fun of the unfortunate save-the-date acronym again, dammit I am going to have my fun while it lasts! A few weeks ago, MOH Johnny5 and I went to an ultra-swank registry event at Crate&Barrel. If you’ve ever been to one of these events, they can be a little overwhelming. They basically give you a short introduction, hand you a scanner, and let you run amok around the store. There’s one thing about the scanner they don’t tell you, though. It makes you feel powerful. And giddy.

In my last post, I expressed my dream of having a friend officiate my wedding and “Everlong” (acoustic, of course) being played as I walk down the aisle. Well, the officiant is taken care of (woot!). Now we move on to the music!
First of all, Mr. Warbs and I are only having live musicians for the ceremony and cocktail hour. That’s right. No band or DJ for our reception—we’re going the DIY route.

Ever since I saw this episode of Friends, I was certain of two things for my own wedding: I would walk down the aisle to a string-quartet version of “Everlong” by Foo Fighters, and I would have one of my close friends officiate. Ten years later, “Everlong” may not make the cut, but I’m still determined to have a friend officiant!

With all of the hustle and bustle of wedding planning, sometimes I forget to lift my head up and pay attention to reality. In my fantasy world, our wedding will go off without a hitch and every moment will be just like it’s from the movies. My new husband and I will exchange teary-eyed but beautiful vows. Everyone will stare in awe as we glide across the floor for our first dance. And all of our guests will gather as we exit to wish us farewell amidst sparklers.
Even though I know that those things probably won’t happen the way I envision (my venue doesn’t allow sparklers, for one), there are a few moments I know for a certainty I won’t get to experience: My dad walking me down the aisle or our father-daughter dance.
Six years ago my father passed away. I wish I could say it gets a little easier as time goes by, but if you’ve ever had experience with death you know that’s not true. I’ve missed so many moments with him. He never got to see me go to prom or graduate from high school or college. And my wedding is just another event I won’t get to share with him. But I plan on including him in my day as much as I can with photos and such. It won’t make up for not having him there, but I still want to acknowledge him in some small way.
Here’s an idea I might steal borrow from another bride:

Wedding dresses. I am nowhere near ready to talk about wedding dresses. I don’t know if I want to have it tailor made or buy it in the store. I don’t know what color I want. I don’t even know if I want to wear a veil! But, as I’m making my way through every other aspect of the planning, it keeps coming up. Yesterday Mr. Warbs and I met with some potential photographers (We LOVED them, but that’s a different post!), and the inevitable question came up: “So…do you have your dress yet?”

Not that kind of role-playing, my fellow creepers. Budget role-playing.
Mr. Warbler and I are lazy by nature. So it’s no surprise that we’ve never really sat down and made an official budget. I found a sample budget in a wedding-planning book and adjusted it according to what I thought we should spend on vendors, and Mr. Warbler basically said, “That sounds good.”
The one thing we did agree on was that we didn’t want to start our marriage off in debt and that we would try to stick to the budget as closely as possible. For a while we were doing pretty well: I would fall in love with something we couldn’t afford, and Mr. Warbs would gently remind me of the budget. We had a nice good cop/bad cop situation working for us.
Then something began to change. Mr. Warbs started giving in. Out of nowhere we switched roles. “Remember the budget” turned into “Well, we’re only getting married once.” And instead of reminding him of the budget I said, “OK!” We had never really considered a videographer before, but after I fell in love with my boss’s wedding video, I felt like we had to have one, too. But, the videographer was too expensive so I was ready to let it go. Mr. Warbs’s “We’re only getting married once” mantra kicked in, and he decided there was no reason we couldn’t up the budget a bit to include the videographer, a photo booth, and a string quartet.

I’m getting way ahead of myself, but lately I’ve been obsessing about wedding invitations. Why am I worrying about that when I haven’t even booked a photographer yet? Because I’ve been following Jessica Claire’s blog, and it’s pretty amazing. Jessica is a photographer who recently married and has been sharing her creative ideas. For her invitations she took a bunch of old hardcover books, hollowed them out, and placed her invitations inside. The finished product looked like this:

A friend asked me this question last week. Why am I getting married? Mr. Warbler and I already live together (in sin), we share finances, and we are in agreement that we’re not having any children. Getting married won’t change anything in our lives, so why bother?

First of all, eeeeek eeeek! Second, let me just say that it is such an honor to be among all of the amazing women I have admired for almost a year now. Oh man, I cannot wait to share my wedding with the hive! So why did I choose Miss Warbler for my character? Well, it was tough—all of the other ones are so cute! I seriously considered the doe because of the abundance of Harry Potter references I could have pulled from. I’m looking at you, Miss Magic! In the end I chose my character because I have a musical name. And no, it’s not “Treble Clef.”
