We woke up bright and early the next morning and headed out to wander around the town. We just wanted to walk around town and explore. We ended up sitting on a bench at a park near Portland State University - it was beautiful there. There were lots of people milling around and the trees were so green and lush.

Me and Mr. Pom cozy on our park bench together.

See how pretty!?
An interesting Stag sculpture amidst a traffic circle.
Even the lamp posts are pretty!
Pretty soon we became ravished - aren’t we always?! So I busted out the Yelp on my iPhone and found directions to a local French pub/restaurant called Higgins. They were known for their house-made pickled veggies. While I’m not a huge fan of sweet pickles, I could have eaten the entire vat of these! The restaurant wasn’t open midday, so we stuck to bar food.

Chèvre cheese, crisp Parmesan toast, fresh pesto, balsalmic, house made pickled veggies and cured olives. SO GOOD!
Open faced sandwich of house made pastrami and salad with more of those pickled veggies.
After lunch we headed towards the mall to do some window shopping - or so I thought. After perusing Louis Vuitton and the likes, we stopped into Tiffany & Co. While I was over drooling at the diamonds, Mr. Pomegranate decided that he wanted to buy me a minimoon keepsake. Once he had chosen a sterling silver bracelet, he hollered for me to come over and pick out a charm with him. The lock charms are the way to go if you don’t want to wait for them to send them to New York to have it soldered on.

My very first little blue box!

Then we headed out for our fancy night out on the town. Please note that we were horrendously over-dressed for Portland. Okay fine - I was horrendously over-dressed, Mr. Pom looked just fine as business casual in PDX usually involved some form of dress shirt and polar fleece. I was determined to wear the Marchesa dress I got at a Gilt Groupe sale earlier this year. Obviously, I didn’t care about the tres casual dress code.

Mr. & Mrs. Pomegranate all gussied up.
We had drinks at the Portland City Grill - we were told that the view was incredible, but that the food was so-so. Instead, we went off a referral to Saucebox - which turned out to be a fantastic choice. I loved their thai fusion cusine.

It began to rain, so instead of cabbing it back home, we hit up a bicycle taxi. Romantic and fun, I was impressed by this guy’s hill climbing skills. Coincidentally, our driver was actually from Roseville, a town only 20 minutes away from where we currently live. Portland is full of transplants, I never tired of hearing everyone’s “I came here on vacation and never went back home” stories.
The next morning was bittersweet - time to pack up and head home. Of course, I managed to snag another round of bread pudding french toast to snack on prior to checking out of the hotel. Thank goodness I’d be running a half-marathon in due time - after all this good eating, I really needed to run it all off.

Bread pudding french toast round two - next to Mr. Pom’s healthier scrambled egg breakfast option.
With that said, our Portland Minimoon was everything we wanted it to be - no jetlag, no crazy international traveling to deal with, no lost hours on a plane, no food poisoning - should I go on? For those interested in taking a true vacation to really relax, I highly reccommend checking out a fun metropolitain town. Sure, we could have gone on a mediterranean cruise or to an all-inclusive mexican riviera vacay - but for us, this was the pefect minimoon. After all, we’ll be heading to France early this summer!
Is anyone else planning a Minimoon-type adventure?
Wonderful recaps. It looks like you guys had a fantastic time. I’ll have to link these to my FI - he’s been wanting to go to Portland for ages!
