Capturing the Essence

After some relaxing holidays and putting my wedding planning on the side for awhile, it’s time to get back to the planning. With just about 6 months left, there are tonnes of things to do.

An important element for my wedding is video. Like my photographer, I’m having issues when it comes to choosing the right company. Being a graphic designer, there are many things that I can do myself like editing and the final montage of the video in the comfort of my own home with the right software. Of course, to be honest, I also don’t want to pay a company for something I could assemble myself. I want someone who can do something that I can’t do. I want to have something different… something along the lines of a movie trailer. Short, sweet, yet packed with emotion.

Here is an example of a super 8 video – thanks to

A while back, I was introduced to Super 8 video – the same type of film Mrs. Onion used for her wedding video. It is becoming more and more popular and I knew it was what I wanted. The company which made me discover this type of footage is Fifty Foot Films. I adore their artistic style, the fact that each video has such warmth and romance, and I love the fact that they use music that is ‘unconventional’ and unexpected, yet so perfect.

What is great is that there are more and more companies which offer this service (at affordable prices), but it has not made its way to Canada yet – or should I say to Montreal. I don’t know whether it will ever make it here before my wedding day, so for now I am looking for companies who might be able to make their way to Montreal. I really want super 8 for my wedding… and I hope I can find someone before it is too late.

I’ve visited and called every company here in Montreal. I even called film universities… and no luck… not to mention that when I inquire about Super 8 they all think I am crazy… no joke. But then again, I am used to it. (You’ve all read my Vendorzilla stories) I’ve contacted several companies in the States to inquire about their rates and see if they would travel to Montreal… I’m certain I don’t have all the companies out there. So if you know of any… please share. 🙂

i’m going to give still-motion another vote. i’m using them to do a super8 for me – and i think the key is to have someone combine super8 footage with digital footage JUST in case the 30+ year old technology decides to crap out or not film properly.

i’m pretty sure the famous new york videographer combines both vintaged-up digital footage and super8 (if that’s been mentioned, sorry i didn’t read everything here close enough)

have you thought about buying an older version of adobe premiere off ebay? i haven’t looked into it at all, but i know the pro one runs almost $500-1000, but i’m not sure what the difference is between that and the $100 “premiere elements” is….

also – the photo people from seattle that i’m considering on booking also do super8, although i don’t think they have samples on their website. i have no idea what their prices are for video coverage sans editing, but they might be pretty affordable:

i think there are a few videographers that do super8, but they have very little evidence that they do it on their websites. i think also that there are probably 10% as many videographers as there are photographers

Thanks Miss Milkshake. Honestly I had a very long email conversation from Still-motion. Very friendly…. 🙂

I would of loved to hire them, but with travel they were still over my budget. ( a good 1k)

Theres a bridal show here in montreal this weekend. Im keeping my fingers crossed and hopefully someone will turn out and say ‘yeah, i do super 8’ if ever i get that response… im gonna hug the guy or girl 🙂
