Officiant: Before Mr. and Miss Rucksack met, they didn’t know if they would make it to this day. Mr. Rucksack proclaims that he saw himself as a lifelong bachelor and Miss Rucksack was starting to think that maybe all of the Disney romance and magic her mother had tried so hard to make her believe wasn’t, in fact, real.
So on a late summer night when they both ended up at karaoke, they weren’t looking for love so much as they were looking to belt out classic renditions of “Copa Cabana” and “Hot Stuff.” And yet, something about the girl in the orange Ralph Lauren sweater made Mr. Rucksack want to get to know her better—even if she was on a date with a different guy. He says he went back the following week just hoping to get a chance to talk to her, and luckily she returned—this time alone.
A first date at a wine bar led to outings at local vineyards and a Ferris wheel kiss at the Durham Fair. Mr. and Miss Rucksack both say that they knew right away that somehow this was “different.” They quickly became inseparable and during a freak October snowstorm they admitted that their relationship had very quickly grown into love. (Mr. Rucksack had actually proclaimed his love for Miss Rucksack one week prior, but since there was beer involved Miss Rucksack made him rescind his proclamation. To this he responded: “Fine, I take it back. But I don’t because I love you!”)
Mr. R says that Miss R will always be his anchor and his best friend. He loves her creativity and would do anything to make her smile. He loves that she’s willing to support him no matter what, even if it means bringing him coffee at 3:00 AM while he waits in line for the latest iPhone. Most importantly, he loves spending time with her, whether it’s walking the beach with Bailey, taking a road trip to Vermont, or watching movies in a blanket fort. Mr. Rucksack is ridiculously in love with Miss Rucksack, and he can’t wait to start their life together as husband and wife.
Miss Rucksack says that Mr. Rucksack is exactly the man she dreamed up the day that she listed all of the qualities she wanted in a husband. This list included everything from “his swimmer’s build” to his sense of humor, his love of music and books, the fact that he is a nice Midwestern boy, and even his astrological sign. She loves his passion and his curiosity for everything in life. She loves when he sings to her, especially the made-up songs about everyday tasks such as the “breakfast song.” And despite the fact that he is a Republican, Miss R still thinks Mr. R is the smartest person she’s ever known.
Mr. and Miss Rucksack, today you are marrying the right person—you have found your perfect partner. It brings us immense happiness to see that you have found each other, and to witness your marriage today.
We then invited Mr. Rucksack’s dad up to read our second reading, “The Blessing of the Hands.”
These are the hands of your best friend, young and strong and full of love for you, that are holding yours on your wedding day, as you promise to love each other today, tomorrow, and forever. These are the hands that will work alongside yours, as together you build your future. These are the hands that will passionately love you and cherish you through the years, and with the slightest touch, will comfort you like no other. These are the hands that will hold you when fear or grief fills your mind. These are the hands that will countless times wipe the tears from your eyes; tears of sorrow, and tears of joy. These are the hands that will tenderly hold your children. These are the hands that will help you to hold your family as one. These are the hands that will give you strength when you need it. And lastly, these are the hands that even when wrinkled and aged, will still be reaching for yours, still giving you the same unspoken tenderness with just a touch.
And since our hands were now joined, it was time for our vows! (This shiz is about to get real!)
