This will be a lot easier if you know how to sew. You should probably take that into consideration when debating what is more precious, your money or your mind. Actually, you should always take that in consideration with every wedding project.
To start, you must measure the circumference of your thigh where you would feel comfortable keeping your garter. Subtract an inch from that total and cut the elastic to that measurement. I find 1/4 elastic works best.
Next you will be cutting your fabric. Whatever your design, make sure the length is 5+ inches from your original thigh measurement. I find that old newspapers work best when making a pattern. In this case, your pattern will be a long rectangle.
You will then need to pin the fabric to the elastic. The easiest way to do this is to pin the ends together, stretch it taut (see below) and pin the middle.
Now you are going to run it through the machine. If you choose ribbon I suggest sewing both the top and bottom of the ribbon. Don’t sew through the middle like I did. Do as I say, not as I do. The easiest way to sew elastic is to lock the stitch first (sew forward three stitches, back three stitches), sew until there is about an inch of fabric behind the foot, grab the excess fabric, pull each end of the garter taut, and sew.
After your fabric and elastic are sewn together, you have to sew the garter into a circle. Pin the right sides together and sew vertically on the wrong side of the garter.
Next, you are going to sew on your decoration.
And finally, realize your first garter sucks, and make a new one.
