Mama Wallaby Says “Yes!” to the Dress

Hive, aren’t surprises the best? One Wednesday in September my mom surprised me by booking a last-minute ticket to Houston. I hadn’t seen her in a couple months, and she hadn’t been here since our engagement party in February, so it was about time that she paid us a visit! Just kidding! But really, she’s been traveling a lot for work this year, and with her crazy workload, she hadn’t had much time to stay abreast of wedding planning details. So you can imagine how happy I was to pick her up from the airport!

My mom works 75% of the time in Anchorage, Alaska and 25% in Seattle. There’s not much shopping in Alaska, and she works fairly long hours, so she didn’t have any opportunities to search for a mother of the bride dress. Shopping is a major pastime in Houston, so Mama Wallaby knew she could find something pretty here.

That Saturday afternoon, Mama Wallaby and I set out for the Houston Galleria, a local shopping mecca. We hit Nordstrom first—it’s a department store based out of Seattle, so she and I both play big-time favoritism with Nordstrom compared to other department stores. It was also the closest store to the parking garage, so hey, what’s a girl to do? I am so happy we started at Nordstrom, because soon after we started browsing dresses on the racks, the most amazing stylist began assisting us, and she turned out to be a total lifesaver. (We also had plenty of laughs—at one point I almost peed my pants from laughing so hard. That’s always a plus when you can have so much fun with a total stranger.)

My mom hadn’t thought much about what she wanted to wear, so she and I started by aimlessly looking for dresses in her favorite colors (which conveniently complement the wedding colors) in all kinds of different lengths and styles. My mom even grabbed a lime green floor-length jersey gown. When the stylist, Auriana, approached us, she began to quiz my mom about her favorite celebrity looks to get an idea of my mom’s taste. When my mom mentioned that she admires Michelle Obama’s style, Auriana pulled a number of understated, contemporary dresses in an array of colors.
One of our favorite dresses was a floor-length brocade dress with a beige underlay:

She also loved a teal satin dress with a v-neck cut and half-length sleeves. This dress did wonders for her figure, and is very wearable for other events like company Christmas parties:

But the winner was a champagne-colored tea-length dress with a beautiful sequined crocheted bodice and a sparkly waistband:

The picture doesn’t do this dress justice. With the beads and sequins on the bodice, as well as the shimmery fabric of the skirt, it will shimmer the evening of the wedding as the sun goes down and the globe lights and candles are illuminated. In person, it really pops—it stands out as a mother-of-the-bride dress more than any other dress Mama Wallaby tried on. And most importantly, she felt beautiful when she put it on.

While she was trying on dresses, a sweet girl in the dressing room next to us was picking out a dress for her rehearsal dinner. The dress she picked out was so gorgeous that I had to try it on, too:

I loved that dress. It was so classy and elegant and flattering! The only obstacle was the price…the dress cost much more than I planned on spending on a rehearsal dinner dress. I’d already bought a nice strapless ivory chiffon dress, but I couldn’t imagine wearing it again after the wedding. This dress, on the other hand, didn’t scream “bride!” to me—I could envision myself wearing it to showers, day-time parties, etc. What do you think? Is this dress worth it, or was I right to stick with the dress I had already bought?

Did you help your mom pick out something special to wear to your wedding? Is it worth it to splurge on a fancy rehearsal dinner dress?

Love me some nordy’s! Our salesperson was awesome as well…my mom has seriously tried on sooooo many dresses because she is so indecisive and our lady has been so patient with us! We go back to see her specifically! Oh, and I’d have a really hard time saying no to that dress but I totally understand the practical side!

Love your post focusing on mom’s style! I feel like the mom options sometimes aren’t very good- like if you go into a bridal salon, the MOB section is outdated. It looks like your mom had some great choices and made the best decision. Love her pick!

I really love the dress your mom picked out. I agree that the mob section in bridal salons is often really outdated sometimes. I also really love the dress that you picked out. It looks really great, and is definitely something you could wear again

Gorgeous choice! I’m so glad stylish MOB outfits seem to be becoming more popular, as opposed to the expected dupioni skirt suits I used to see so much. Your mom looks great!

I admit I wish I had spent more time looking for a rehearsal dinner dress, because I didn’t realize how many photos were going to be taken that day. It occurred to me that morning, so literally the morning of the rehearsal I went out and bought the only passable white dress I could find. (I suddenly realized it was important to me to wear white!) And if you can stretch out that “I’m a bride!” feeling an extra day by having a pretty, white rehearsal dress, do it!

    @ecjohnson: I loooove Nordy’s too!!!
@ddavila2001: @anemonie: Totally agree. I don’t understand why most official MOB dresses are so ugly and unflattering.
@Mathis13: I’ll check with my mom and get back to you! Check the formalwear section of Nordstrom’s in the meantime. Or send me a PM and I’ll send you the deets 🙂 love those colors!!

Love your mom’s dress choice! My mom isn’t into typical “MOB” sections of department stores either. She ended up wearing a blush embroidered silk skirt suit that she wore to my sister’s wedding 9 years ago. I wanted her to like her outfit and be comfortable, and save some money too!

Whoa, mama. Any idea what brand that second teal dress is? My mom would look unbelievable in that, and I might even have a go at it. I loooove the one she picked out too!
