The Dragon Wedding Playlists

I had a hard time picking out our wedding music. There were so many options, and we had such a wide variety of people to please! I spent a lot of time poring over any playlists I could find online, so I wanted to share ours, in the hope that it might help out another frantic self-DJ’ing bride.

Due to our late start, I’m not sure if this actually played, but when I set it up I was aiming for lighthearted music to make a happy mood.

1. “Me and You” – Barry Louis Polisar
2. “Is This Love” – Bob Marley
3. “Stand By Me” – John Lennon (I like it more than the Ben E. King version!)
4. “When I’m Sixty-Four” – The Beatles
5. “Say Hey (I Love You)” – Michael Franti
6. “Love You Madly” – Cake
7. “Home” – Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeroes
8. “All I Want Is You” – Barry Louis Polisar

I decided to do an oldies theme for the cocktail hour to keep things fun and bubbly! These are listed in alphabetical order by artist—during the actual cocktail hour they shuffled on a loop just in case the photos took longer than expected (and they did!).

1. “Sugar, Sugar” – The Archies
2. “God Only Knows” – The Beach Boys
3. “The Longest Time” – Billy Joel
4. “Dearest” – Buddy Holly
5. “All I Have to Do Is Dream” – Buddy Holly
6. “All My Love” – Buddy Holly
7. “It’s So Easy” – Buddy Holly
8. “Baby Love” – Diana Ross and the Supremes
9. “Oh Love” – Don Wade
10. “Under the Boardwalk” – The Drifters
11. “All Shook Up” – Elvis
12. “I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)” – The Four Tops
13. “Love and Marriage” – Frank Sinatra
14. “What the World Needs Now Is Love” – Jackie DeShannon
15. ‘Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay” – Otis Redding
16. “You Can’t Hurry Love” – Phil Collins (I couldn’t have a wedding without Phil.)
17. “A Groovy Kind of Love” – Phil Collins
18. “Cecelia” – Simon and Garfunkle
19. “My Girl” – The Temptations
20. “Crimson and Clover” – Tommy James & the Shondells
21. “Hanky Panky” – Tommy James & the Shondells
22. “Elenore” – The Turtles
23. “So Happy Together” – The Turtles

Our dinner music theme, as I mentioned before, was Canadian music. It was really nice to sit and eat and listen to some of our friends playing, albeit on a recording.

1. “Cruel Sea” – Nick Sherman
2. “Best I Know” – Good Lovelies
3. “Wrong Side of Town” – Nick Sherman
4. “Careless” – Nick Sherman
5. “Danny’s Song” – Anne Murray
6. “Jasper” – Aidan Knight
7. “Every Little Thing” – Good Lovelies
8. “Oleander” – Mother Mother (This one was a bit jarringly loud”¦)
9. “Heart of Gold” – Neil Young
10. “Up on Cripple Creek” – The Band
11. “Drag Your Words Through” – Nick Sherman
12. “1, 2, 3, 4” – Feist
13. “Tomorrow” – Nick Sherman
14. “Lie Down” – Good Lovelies
15. “When I’m Up (I Can’t Get Down)” – Great Big Sea
16. “Angel Eyes” – Jeff Healey Band (I couldn’t resist playing this one again later.)
17. “Midnight Lovers” – The Afterbeat
18. “Robots” – Dan Mangan
19. “Five Days in May” – Blue Rodeo
20. “Bobcaygeon” – The Tragically Hip
21. “Head over Heels” – Blue Rodeo
22. “When the Night Feels My Song” – Bedouin Soundclash
23. “Lovers in a Dangerous Time” – Barenaked Ladies

OK, so now the part that might be a bit more helpful”¦

We started off with our first dance, to “Safe and Sound” by Hawksley Workman. Then I danced with my dad to “Butterfly Kisses/Daddy’s Little Girl” by Jeff Carson and Faith Hill (we let our parents choose!), and Mr. Dragon danced with MIL Dragon to “The Rose” by Bette Midler.

For the rest of the reception, we had two lists set up, for before throwing the garter and bouquet, and after throws. We may have done the throws a bit too early because the dancing died down a bit after that, but we did have a few people rally on and off throughout the night! I’ll bold the songs that I noticed drew an energetic turnout.

Before the Throws:

1. “You Shook Me All Night Long” – AC/DC
2. “Dynamite” – Taio Cruz
3. “Rolling in the Deep” – Adele & Daft Punk (This was a request.)
4. “Poker Face” – Lady Gaga
5. “Sexy and I Know It” – LMFAO
6. “Superstition” – Stevie Wonder
7. “Lay Lady Lay” – Bob Dylan
8. “Boot Scootin’ Boogie” – Brooks & Dunn
9. “Harvest Moon” – Neil Young
10. “Chicken Fried” – Zac Brown Band
11. “Fishin’ in the Dark” – The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band
12. “Bless the Broken Road” – Rascall Flatts
13. “Old Time Rock and Roll” – Bob Seger
14. “Play That Funky Music” – Wild Cherry
15. “Kiss” – Prince
16. “Hey Ya” – Outkast
17. “Walk This Way” – Run DMC
18. “Billie Jean” – Michael Jackson

So—we had a lot of country fans in our midst, it turns out. I should have added in more country! “Kiss” got a ridiculous amounts of singalongs and crazy dancing. The last three songs might have, too—I was inside trying to find flowers to throw so I’ll never know. 🙂

After Throws:

1. “Smile” – Uncle Kracker
2. “Time to Switch to Whiskey” – Corb Lund Band (We thought this would be funny, but it kind of fell flat.)
3. “Paradise City” – Guns N’ Roses (Bit of a bad choice”¦I cut this one early because the tail end of it was just too loud and nobody was dancing.)
4. “Angel” – Jack Johnson
5. “White Wedding” – Billy Idol
6. “Modern Love” – David Bowie
7. “You Make My Dreams” – Hall and Oates
8. “Angel Eyes” – Jeff Healey Band (again!)
9. “The Twist” – Chubby Checker
10. “Shout” – The Isley Brothers
11. “Monster Mash” – Bobby “Boris” Pickett
12. “Burning Love” – Elvis Presley
13. “Born to Be Wild” – Steppenwolf
14. “Pump Up the Jam” – Technotronic
15. “Fat Bottom Girls” – Queen
16. “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap” – AC/DC
17. “Mony Mony” – Billy Idol (Yes, we sang the dirty parts.)
18. “Lost Together” – Blue Rodeo
19. “Don’t Stop Believin'” – Journey
20. “500 Miles” – The Proclaimers
21. “Home for a Rest” – Spirit of the West
22. “Friends in Low Places” – Garth Brooks

Our last song was “Lean on Me” and I have no idea if anyone danced or if anyone was even around, still—I was inside awaiting a cab and sweet, sweet sleep. 🙂

There are less bolded songs in this playlist, as you can see (although I did spend a chunk of the latter half of the night inside trying to calm my stomach, handing out gifts to family that missed the rehearsal gift-giving, and saying good-bye to people on their way out, so again, I may have missed some dancing).

The fun oldies were a hit, as were the classic party songs—I made the mistake of jamming all the good stuff toward the end because I thought we’d have more people around by then, so if I could do it over again I’d front load the list with the popular songs and maybe extend the pre-throw playlist.

iPod brides, did you have a tough time making playlists? How did they turn out in the end?

PS: I have a review of the My WeddingDJ app coming up next!

I don’t recognize the Canadian songs, but I do like country! I like the oldies theme for cocktail hour and the contemporary for dinner and dancing. Great playlist, and I’m impressed you did everything yourself on an iPod!
