Maternal Materials: Dressing My Mom

When I was growing up I used to take clothes out of my mom’s closet. Not all of them, mind you, but every once in a while I’d borrow a shirt or a dress. I imagine if we’d been more similar in shoe size we would have shared shoes back and forth, too.

My mom was there during most of the occasions I chose dresses for school dances, and she was there the day I found and (later) the day I bought my wedding dress. I’m her only child so I know this is a special process for her, just like it’s special to me.

I also know that it means she wants to look extra good-looking at our wedding.

“I don’t want to look old.”

That was all my mom told me.

So here’s what I’m thinking:

Komarov Sheer Sleeve Dress from Nordstrom

I love this one—I think it’s super flattering, the navy is elegant and classy, and my mom has liked styles like this in the past. My one concern is that the sleeves might get too warm for partying it up all night (like I hope she’ll do).

Komarov Embellished Square Neckline from Nordstrom

This one is similar to the first one but has a different (fancier) neckline. The color is beautiful but, again, the sleeves might get too warm.

Komarov V-Neck Textured Dress from Nordstrom

This one is really beautiful and I think it’s gorgeous. Bonus: the jacket is removable, allowing for maximum cooling during partying it up. The website says this is “teal ombre” but it looks pretty dark to me—I’m not exactly sure if the color is necessarily wedding appropriate.

Komarov Pleated Dress from Nordstrom

This one has the removable jacket again and the same lovely belt. This one is my favorite, I think. The color would be beautiful on my mom; plus, it’s blue AND gray, both the wedding colors! Major problem for this one? The price! It’s $398.

Pisarro Nights Beaded Dress from Nordstrom

I don’t know how my mom would feel about this one. I think it’s very elegant, but I know it’s longer than she typically likes. Plus sleeves. It may be too close to an “old” looking dress for my mom’s tastes.

Adrianna Papell Tiered Chiffon Dress from Nordstrom

I think this would be pretty on my mom—navy is a great color for her. My main concern with this one though is fit and, potentially, that the style is too close to the chiffon styles that the bridesmaids are looking at.

Marina Lace Dress from Macy’s

Navy again, and a beautiful silhouette. This one might be too clingy for my mom’s tastes, though. The hint of sparkle is really fun!

Alex Evenings Dress from Macy’s

I don’t know if my mom would like this style, but I think it’d be great on her. The neckline is really flattering and the color and style is beautiful. This says “sophisticated but still hot mama!”

Since we weren’t expecting to go shopping any time soon for a dress, I stopped looking. On Mother’s Day, however, my mom and I looked at dresses again, and we found one that jumped out to both of us. After a week, with each of us looking at it every day, my mom made the decision to buy it. So excited!

Alex Evenings Dress from Nordstrom

I love it! It wasn’t available in the store, so she bought it and had it shipped to her. They didn’t have her size, so she ordered up and we’ll find someone to alter it for her. I can’t wait to see what it looks like in person (though she did send me a picture)! I know my mom wants to shorten it a bit (she’s not a fan of long dresses), but we’ll see what it looks like.

So what do you think? Did anyone else spend a lot of time thinking about what their mom would wear? Or is that just me and my obsession with clothes/shoes?

All of those dresses look gorgeous and the one she picked is great on her. I haven’t even given a thought to what the mother’s will wear–and I don’t think I’m going to. As long as they’re comfortable, I’m good.

Well, it certainly isn’t old. I’m 26 and I would love to to rock that. She looks really great, and you’re right that is a great color for her.

I have thought a little bit about my mother’s clothing choice, but not much.

Cute! We looked a little at MOB dresses when we picked out BM dresses, but everything we liked was $400+! That’s so crazy. I really like the one you chose and the blue/gray one with the removable jacket. So pretty! I hope we can find something nice for my mom that she will feel fabulous in as well!

@Miss Road Trip: Yeah, I am definitely trying to find the balance. My mom wanted help, but I’m not sure if my FMIL does.
@GoldStar: I totally would rock it, too!
@Blonde17Jess: Yeah, the price tag was not something I was excited about. The one we went with ended up being the least expensive! (Only $175!)

I love your mom’s dress! I think she should keep it the length it is…that way, she won’t have to wear nylons!

You picked a great dress. I know that mom and I will spend a good amount of time looking for her outfit, as well!

I love all of these choices for a MOB dress.
As you know, I have to select *two* outfits and mom2 is standing her ground on wearing a purple tux. I am not amused. :-/ Mom1 has already purchased her dress and I love love love love it.

Your mom is adorable and that is a fantastic color on her!!
