Our Story: Just Plane Crazy

In 2009, just over a year after Mr. Funnel Cake and I had started dating, I had to exit Switzerland and remain abroad while I applied for a work visa. Mr. Funnel Cake was sweet enough to travel with me to Ohio and spend two weeks with me and my family, but after that he had to go home while I waited for the visa to process.

(Via SIL)

When he arrived back in Switzerland, Mr. Funnel Cake found out his work was sending him to Waco, Texas in one week. So naturally I bought a plane ticket to meet him there! I mean”¦ wouldn’t you?

I seemed to have an addiction to following this man around the world, but you cannot imagine how romantic it feels to embrace him in an airport. (Or can you?)

It’s something like this.

Actually, I’ve sort of developed a thing for trains and airports now. Does anyone else find it incredibly romantic to meet your love in a train station and share another passionate kiss at last? And in the same token, saying goodbye at a train station or airport is excruciatingly heartbreaking.

While I worked on my visa process and figured out tickets to Switzerland, Mama Funnel Cake told me that eventually I would have to stop following Mr. Funnel Cake around the world and that at some point he would need to show me some commitment. Thankfully she didn’t have anything to worry about seeing as how Mr. FC proposed about a year later. I can truly say that Mr. FC has done literally everything he can to stay close to me.

This October, I am excited that Mr. Funnel Cake and I will take every flight together. I get nervous about flying when we are separated (a fear that developed only after I met Mr. FC) so I am very relieved we’ll be together the whole time.

Are you flying to your honeymoon or wedding? Will you be meeting your sweetie in the airport or are you traveling together?

Need to catch up?

airport meetings are the greatest! my FI and i met at an airport, actually. airports are our “thing.” even now, whenever a soldier friend comes home for R&R and i’m around, i try to join the rest of the family for the arrival. it’s so beautiful to be the audience as distant love shrinks to an embrace :,-)

Having met DH quite a few times in Waco Airport I kind of know what you mean, those times it’s fairly nice that that airport is tiny so you don’t make too much of a scene.

One of my worst/best memories was crying when FI dropped me off at the airport for my study abroad program and then meeting him at the da Vinci airport in Rome after being separated for over a month! Now we both commute in and out of Grand Central for work so it’s not uncommon for us to meet up in the train station. Not as romantic as our meeting in Rome, but it’s still nice to meet up with him in the station at the end of a long day. 🙂

Thankfully all wedding and honeymoon travel will be done together!

We now have the same dislike of flying apart. I think it’s because when we used to fly apart it would mean we wouldn’t be together for awhile 🙁

I used to have that moment every couple of months. FI lived away and could only visit every 50 days. That feeling of running towards your SO shoving people away and hug him while everyone is watching, so exciting :). Also that horrible feeling of fighting tears back until you make it to your car when he left.

I totally understand the addiction to airport Kisses! My FI is a U.S. Marine and we have had our share of wonderful reunions and sad goodbyes in airports. Luckily most airports allow military spouses or SO go through security and to the gate to say goodbye 🙂

I can totally relate to the newly developed fear of flying. I used to very much enjoy it and was totally unprepared for how scared I felt the last few take-offs. I’ve been treating myself to a glass (or two) of wine 🙂

I have never had an airport greeting and darn it – I want one!

That moment is exactly why I love that my man always offers to take me to the airport, so I can avoid the parking fees (even though it’s over 2 hours away round trip). It’s always sad to walk away to my gate, leaving him there like a sad puppy… but that moment of coming back, knowing that he’s been there waiting to give me the biggest “I missed you so much” embrace is totally worth it!
