Puppy Love: And We Danced

Before we could pump up the jams and get the party started, there were a few dances that we had to get out of the way. The reason I put it like that is that the men involved in these dances were not exactly super excited about partaking. Don’t get me wrong, both Mr. Dalmatian and my dad were complete gentlemen and did wonderful jobs moving me about the dance floor, but neither is a fan of the art of dancing, especially when it is just them in front of a large crowd of onlookers. But despite their possible lack of enthusiasm, they stepped up to the plate and played their roles as groom and father of the bride quite handsomely. First up, our first dance as husband and wife.

After much contemplating, we selected Brad Paisley’s “Then” for our first-dance song. I know this has become a popular choice, but with good reason! I love how the lyrics capture the past, present, and future of a relationship, and as I have mentioned I am a huge sucker for Brad Paisley (props to anyone who noticed the Brad Paisley connection in the title of this post).

Now I must admit that, while I was more on board than the boys, I also wasn’t super comfortable with having all eyes on me on the dance floor. Given this, we had told our DJ when to fade out the song so that we were not forced to dance for the entire duration (this was especially important given the length of the instrumental part at the end). Well, our DJ told us after that he was amused by the fact that as soon as we reached that part of the song, we both shot him death glares to make sure he remembered to fade out (which he did).

Next, they called my dad to the dance floor. As he put his arms up, I said “Wait, this is the wrong way.” He then informed me that it was actually the correct way and I quickly realized that Mr. Dalmatian and I had danced with the opposite arms of how you are supposed to dance. Our bad. Needless to say, we did not take dance lessons to prepare. But no harm, no foul! At least my dad helped me get it right for one dance.

For this dance I also debated many different song selections. At Sister A’s wedding last year they danced to “Time of My Life” by Green Day, which was a great choice. I was looking for something that shared the short length of that song, as well as something that was sweet without being too cheesy (my father is pretty much the polar opposite of a big sap). We landed on “Sweet Pea” by Amos Lee, and it worked out great.

Were you and your spouse excited to have all eyes on you or did you dread going solo on the dance floor?

I had no idea you were doing it wrong!! Lol. Our song is also “Then” by brad paisley! We just love that song and especially since my FI is a musician we had to have a song that was not only meaningful but has gorgeous instrumental. I think the part I am most excited about is when my dad and I dance! FI is going to sing “Stealing Cinderella” by Chuck Wicks. I love this song, especially since it is sung from the groom’s point of view….and to top it off my groom will be singing it! Kleenex for all! 🙂

“Sweet Pea” had been one of my favorite songs since hearing it on that AT&T commercial years ago. Our DJ played it during dinner service.
