Honeymoon in my Hometown: Good ol’ San Antone

San Antonio is a really fun place to have a honeymoon, or even a mini-moon for all the Texas bees out there. The sun is always shining and the people are always smiling. The weather is great most of the year, but it can get REALLY hot during the summer, so make sure to pack your swimsuit if you’re going to travel then. Mr. PF and I love to play tourist in our own city, but if we were going to do it up big, this is what we would do…

San Antonio has some of the best Mexican food I have ever had. If you have never had a breakfast taco, this is a must for this trip. Try Rolando’s Super Tacos for a huge treat. Literally. 😉

If you are looking for a more traditional breakfast spot, try The Guenther House. They have  the best biscuits I have ever eaten. The pancakes are delicious, too!

Riverwalk Eats:

This is Mr. PF’s and my date spot. 🙂 Whenever we have a free night together, which is rare, we head over to County Line on the River BBQ. They have some serious Mexican Martinis, which is like a margarita with a twist. Request yours with fresh lime juice—you wont be disappointed. Also, if you’re on a budget, order the appetizer sampler which comes with all the meats they offer and is more than enough to share for about $14.00… You didn’t hear it from me. 😉

If you’re looking for a super-romantico spot for a date night, look no further than Paesanos on the Riverwalk. I have seriously been eating at this place since I was a baby; the food is de-lish. This place can get pretty pricey so I would recommend eating here and then going out to drink somewhere else on the Riverwalk when you’re done. Try their Shrimp Paesano appetizer or even better, the giant calamari 😀

Now, if you really want the Riverwalk experience, try a riverboat dinner cruise. You can pick between two different restaurants and cruise down the Riverwalk while eating a delicious dinner!

After dinner treat yourself to a romantic carriage ride through downtown. If you go during the holidays, the Riverwalk is decked out in lights and it is absolutely gorgeous!

There are so many options for you when picking a place to stay in San Antonio. We have everything from budget options to top-of-the-line 5-star hotels.

Riverwalk hotels

  • Palacio del Rio – A Hilton hotel right on the river. We have stayed here many times for New Year’s Eve and we always have a blast. They also have a pub attached to the hotel, so that’s just an added bonus.
  • Grand Hyatt – This is the newest hotel on the Riverwalk. They also have a bar, and this place looks super-swanky.

Budget Options

  • Holiday Inn Express Downtown – This is a great option for budget travelers because you don’t have to sacrifice a clean room just to save some bucks.
  • The Crockett Hotel – This is one of the oldest and most historic hotels in San Antonio. It probably has ghosts. 😀

Shopping in San Antonio is one department that I consider myself especially knowledgeable. Although, when I’m on vacation, I don’t like to shop too much because then I will have to carry it all back home with me. Here are a few popular suggestions.

Rivercenter Mall – This mall has all the major stores you could want. They also have a comedy club and movie theatre. The comedy club is super-fun and you can get a coupon on restaurant.com.

La Cantera – This outdoor mall is so nice and has tons of delicious restaurants. It’s pretty far from downtown though, and you’re looking at about a $25-$30 cab ride.

There are so many things to do in and around San Antonio, it’s going to be hard to narrow it down to the best!

If you are looking for a day trip, you have to visit Gruene. It’s about 30 minutes outside of San Antonio and it is the cutest little town you have ever seen. They have amazing restaurants and it is really fun to walk around and take it all in.

If you are going to visit San Antonio in the summertime, you have to hit up Schlitterbahn. This is the best water park, ever!!! They have so many fun slides and rides, you will spend all day here. If water parks aren’t your thing, you can go tubing along the Comal River!

San Antonio has two theme parks which are both really fun. Sea World is open year ’round and Fiesta Texas is open during spring, summer and for the holidays.

Of course, if you visit San Antonio, you gotta visit the Alamo. If you have time you can explore the other historical missions we have here.

Lastly, if you’re lucky enough to travel to San Antonio during April, you can check out FIESTA. This is a week long event full of festivals, carnivals, food and drinks. Think of Mardi Gras with a Mexican twist. This city knows how to party, y’all.

Look at all that confetti.

Hopefully some of y’all can use this information for a fun weekend away, or even for  your honeymoon! Maybe I have even persuaded some of y’all to come visit me! 😀

Have you ever been to San Antonio? What’s your favorite thing to do here?

I went to San Antonio a few years ago with a group of my scrapbooking girlfriends. We did the riverboat dinner cruise and it was so much fun! Someday I’d like to go back and tour the historical sites!

I adore San Antonio. When I lived in the Dallas area, making the trip down was one of my favorites. I haven’t been in a while, but would love to go back. Great suggestions!
