The Squirrels Have Arrived!

Hello hive!!

I am so excited to become Miss Squirrel and share all of our wedding details with you! I got Mrs. Penguin’s email late Friday afternoon. Things were pretty quiet around the office. My coworkers were starting to head home and I was finishing a few things up before I saw my last patient of the day. I was sitting in my office, I saw the email, and my heart didn’t even pitter-patter because I figured it was a no-go. Then as I skimmed the page…BAM…I saw a link to the characters. I freaked! YES! In those 0.5 seconds I sent a quick prayer that no one had been selected between Miss Bat and me so my first choice of animal was still available. Double YES!

My brain was running a million miles a minute—I got accepted! I forwarded Mr. Squirrel the email and sent a quick text that said (not to paraphrase or anything) “OMG.OMG.OMG. Check your email!” I snapped an awkward pic to attempt to document the excitement, then pulled it together, put on my big-girl face, and slipped off to see my patient! I feel so privileged to be picked, and I cannot wait to share this journey with all of you!

Miss Squirrel

I was born and raised in a large rambunctious Catholic family in Ohio. We are all up in each other’s business and have a lot of fun together. I now live in the sunny Tampa, Florida where I work as a genetic counselor at a cancer center. I love love love my job and wouldn’t change it for the world. It’s incredibly rewarding and every day I am reminded to treasure even the smallest of moments. I craft, therefore I am. Just kidding, I am not that intense! I do love a good DIY as much as the next person and feel like my head is exploding with ideas. (Oh Pinterest…) I love to be outside, whether that is spending the day at the beach, biking, or reading under a lonely tree. A good bargain rocks my world, and I prefer to think of myself as “thrifty” yet impulsive. Generally, they balance each other out.

Meet Mr. Squirrel. Some bees have cute little nicknames for their men. Just know when I say “favorite person ever,” I’m talking about this guy:

He is the best! He is originally from Arkansas and a beer definitely brings out the twang. In spite of that, he is a city boy at heart. Mr. Squirrel loves art, music, and adventures! He is extremely laid-back and can get along with anyone. He hates pickles but since meeting me has learned to appreciate the wonders of a green pepper. He complements me very well (AKA, calms my crazies!). We have big plans for our future and a large drooling hairy puppy is next on the agenda.

There were many reasons I knew we just had to be the Squirrels.

1. From an obvious standpoint, squirrels live in the middle of forest (OK fine…at least a tree on the side of the road). Our wedding is going to be very woodsy and whimsical. Picture long feasting tables that are covered in moss and candlelight. There will be large oak trees with cafe lights twinkling in the air. I imagine we may even have a few squirrels as surprise guests at our reception! It will be playful, full of laughter and love.

2. I was that awkward child who couldn’t pronounce her “R” sound. With the help of a speech therapist, and only minor emotional trauma, around second grade I finally learned how to. Unfortunately, a few R-heavy words still gave me trouble and instead of attempting them, I made a conscious effort never to speak these particular words:

  • rural (Instead I would say country, or outside the ‘burbs.)
  • drawer (dresser)
  • quarrel (fight, argue)

And the last one…

  • squirrel

Can you imagine? Years of my life went by and I can guarantee I never said the word! Unfortunately, there are no synonyms for the word squirrel. At first I tried chipmunk, but a chipmunk is like a squirrel’s third cousin, once removed. It doesn’t even come close. Somewhere in the middle of my teenage angst I decided to buck up and start calling a squirrel what it is…a squirrel. 🙂 I feel like it is just icing on the cake that now I get to be Miss Squirrel! Take that, speech impediment!

Now for your viewing pleasure, I present my “Holy cow, I’M MISS SQUIRREL” face:

I cannot wait to share more wedding details with everyone! Get ready for a little midsummer dreaming. 🙂
