The Dalmatian-Moon: Why I Love Travel Agents

While I had casually browsed beautiful honeymoon destinations soon after we got engaged, it was a Sunday night when we decided it was time to kick our butts into gear and start making some decisions. By Tuesday night we had everything booked and ready to go. Yes, that’s right, in a mere 48 hours we were able to complete the entirely stress-free process of arranging everything that needed for an amazing honeymoon experience! How is this possible, you ask? The answer, my friends, is simple: A travel agent.

I had never used a travel agent before but we have a family friend who has planned many trips for many different members of my family, including MOH A’s honeymoon last May. So I decided to take a chance and shoot her a quick email. Best move ever. Here’s why:

They are all-knowing: We had no preference in terms of location other than that it be warm and sunny (see our honeymoon wish list). Even when narrowing it down to all-inclusive resorts, there are still about a bagillion options throughout the Caribbean and Mexico. You can do lots of browsing online, but the fact is they all have websites with photo galleries so appealing that you want to book immediately. And even if you find one with good reviews, how do you know that there isn’t one out there with better reviews? How do I know which one is the best? The fact is, I didn’t know. But our travel agent did!

Too many choices! Image via

They remember the details: Remember how I wanted to be lazy during our honeymoon? I also wanted to be lazy when it came to planning our honeymoon. It’s not that I didn’t want to put any time into it, but with a new job and a wedding rapidly approaching, I did not exactly have an excessive amount of extra time lying around. Another glorious thing about using a travel agent was that when we booked with her, we didn’t just book a room but we booked travel plans that included every detail. So when we land at the Cancun airport, instead of coming to the harsh realization that I forgot to book a way to get to the hotel, we will have a transfer ready for us.

On top of these perks, it is also reassuring to know that we have someone reliable that we can contact if anything goes wrong during our travels. While I certainly don’t want or expect this to happen, it is still comforting to know that we would not be stuck dealing with it ourselves.

I must say, after this booking experience, I am completely sold on working with a travel agent. She listened to what we wanted, worked within our budget, was accommodating (like helping us figure out how to use airline miles that Mr. D’s parents had for us to use – thank you, thank you, thank you!), and was incredibly nice and responsive throughout the entire process.

Have you ever worked with a travel agent? Do you have any tips for choosing an agent?

I totally agree! Mr. Unicycle’s mom is a travel agent, so she did our honeymoon for us and it’s been so simple! I wish she was a wedding planner too.

I also had never used a travel agent before because I usually like to have control over things 🙂 My fiance used a travel agent to book our honeymoon, and I agree, it is nice to be a little lazy about one part of the wedding to-do list! Having an itinerary laid out for me, especially with transfers and island hopping, is definitely one less thing to stress about!

We used a travel agent for our honeymoon too! it was my first time using an agent and it was a great experience. Honestly…i didn’t notice too much difference in cost between booking through them and booking online and they do all the work for you!

I’m leaning more and more towards using a travel agent, primarily to make getting the best deal that much easier. How much do they charge, about..?

We are trying to decide between Thailand and St. Lucia. Can anyone suggest a good travel agent that can help us plan/decide on honeymoon destination??

Where did you find your travel agent? I’ve been looking and most people’s response is “with the internet, are there still travel agents?”. So I need help! Where did you go to find a good one?
