The Final Countdown

So all week the weather forecast for Friday (our wedding day…. eeeeeeek!) has said this dreaded word:

I don’t know if anyone else has been following the Weather Channel recently (probably not… I usually don’t) but there is, and I quote, “a slow moving storm system traveling from west to east.” It’s the storm that has caused all that tornado damage in Texas (to all the bees out in Dallas-Fort Worth, I pray that you and your families are safe!!!). The front page of reads “Texas Tornado Close Up” and “Widespread Wet System Inches Into Southeast.” Southeast? That’s me!

Cue freak-out. I know that I discussed a rain plan… but when it thunderstorms in Florida it means lightning. And loud thunder. And possibly tornadoes. That’s really not ideal for the wedding day.

So to distract myself from things I can’t control, I’ve been putting together all the signage and little paper details for the wedding. I have literally been getting up, going to the gym, going to work, and coming home and distracting myself. I’ve had a surprisingly good time doing it, too.

If you had asked me my thoughts on all the “paper” items for the wedding the day after I got engaged, I would have said, “Who cares about paper? It all gets thrown away anyway.” Now, just a few days out from the wedding, the “paper” elements (invitations, escort cards, wedding day signage) has become one of my favorite elements of the event!

My mom and I started working together on the escort cards weeks ago when Mr. O was out of town. We wrote down ALL of the guests’ names (even if they weren’t coming) and put them in alphabetical order to go through later. We decided to write them on old book pages just to add a different element of paper to the mix.

Here is a little hint if you decide to do this…

double check the book’s pages for explicit, four-letter words. We noticed over half way through that one of the escort cards had a dirty wordy on it and died laughing. With careful inspection we noticed that SEVERAL had not-so-nice words on them. Now, this wouldn’t be a huge ordeal for some of our guests (our friends will probably get a kick out of it like I did), but I don’t particularly want Mr.O’s grandmother or my 9 year old cousin to find anything questionable. It’s just not classy. So we’ve had to go back and double check them…. I guess hindsight is 20/20!

The rest of our paper products have been put together on the computer. I’ve been an Adobe Photoshop fiend for several days now. At any given moment my desktop looks like this:

So far, I’ve made a Cocktail Menu sign…

A sign with our names and wedding date. We’ll probably put this in our bedroom after the wedding.

And last, my favorite, an homage to the day of the week we’re getting married. Ten points if you can name that band!

Anyone other bees out there using creativity to distract themselves? Has paper shifted from low priority to high as your engagement progresses, or have you found you’ve had the opposite reaction to paper?

Please, please post your ideas for displaying those gorgeous escort cards! Do they have stands on the back? Are you laying them flat? We’re doing something very similar and I can’t figure out how to display them on the table so that a strong wind won’t blow them over!

I’m a few miles below you in The Bahamas, and have the same concerns!

Yesterday, the weather was perfect – water like glass, the occasional cloud drifting by….

This morning, I woke up to howling wind and black skies. The forecast is ‘storms, followed by storms, with a hint of storms later today!

I’m photographing a wedding this afternoon on a tiny island, about 3 miles offshore form where I’m based, and am a little concerned for how this one will play out!

    Good luck for tomorrow!

Thinking of you on your special day, Miss (soon to be Mrs.) O! Fingers tightly crossed for clear – or at least not tumultuous – skies 🙂

LOVE your escort cards! Did you back them with anything though? Book pages can be very thin, how’d you make them thick/durable enough to be used as cards?

I would love more information on how you made the cards! They are exactly what we are looking for! Didnt you worry that the paper would be too thin? And how did you get that vintage look? THANKS!
