I really like to personalize stuff for around my house, but uh…I have a really short attention span. I get in a craft mood, and I have to strike while the glue gun is hot. Or the mood will pass, and the project will wind up in the crate of abandonment, along with the other dregs of failed crafts. Also, I get frustrated if it’s too hard, so the project has to be easy enough to complete while watching TV.
Therefore, all of my projects are one night stands. I gather supplies, I craft like a madwoman, and I’m done by the stroke of midnight. Project, done. I accomplish this by taking all sorts of shortcuts. Does this yield shoddier projects? Why yes it does. But nobody is grading me…and for wedding stuff, they’ll need to last for less than one day.
The main shortcut is to use instant adhesives. Glue gun. Glue stick. Tape. Oh, and also: staple gun.
So, the first project. Easy-as-pie banners that look something like this:
I’m definitely making bunting banners for our wedding. They’re awesome for candy buffets, head tables, bridal showers, you name it.
- Small Cricut paper-cutter ($10 from Michaels)
- Square hole punch ($6-ish? from Michaels)
- Thin ribbon (50 cents from Michaels)
- Paper (I use regular and cardstock, whatevs)
- Glue stick
Cut your chosen shape with the paper cutter—I usually use rectangles, but also sometimes triangles:
At the top, space two hole punches equally apart. If you feel like adding another color, cut a smaller shape and use a glue stick. It’ll look something like this:
Notice how the top edge is a bit wonky? Yeah. No one will notice. Repeat until you have as many as you need. I like to make banners with pretty patterns AND words, so I tend to pick up cool letters any time I see them in the store. (I think these all came from Michaels too…)
Then glue stick a letter on every shape you’ve cut out, thread the ribbon through, and voila:
I made this for a little engagement fete for friends of ours. But then we got engaged, so I made a new one:
We’ve left it up for months now. I mean, why not? We made it through Tuesday! Congratulations Us! We saved $6 on Indian food using a coupon! Congratulations Us!
You made a comically easy banner for your dessert table whilst watching TV? ME TOO. Congratulations Us!
Any other lazy pseudo-crafters want to ‘fess up?
