Grand Exit?

When Sister D’orsay was married we blew bubbles as they exited the church. I’d seen several couples having rose petals, bubbles, sparkles, eco-fetti, confetti, etc. thrown on them as they headed back down the aisle as well. I’d also seen photos where it looked like the couple was leaving for the night, or ones that looked like they were being announced into their reception.

Do you guys feel as though there is a set time to do this? We’re having our ceremony/reception at the same place, so I’m not sure at what point we would feel the least silly to have a “throw things in the air” type of reception. We’re also likely to use car pooling to get back, so we probably wouldn’t do it as we leave at the very end of our reception, either.

Here are a few possibilities:

Sparklers: I LOVE how these look in photos, I just have a fear of feeling like we’re on Monday Night Football, or getting burned:

Rose petals: They’re not so eco-friendly depending on where they come from. Also, I feel bad for the poor flowers who must’ve been strangled for these petals:

Eco-fetti: I worry that I’ll be picking it out of my dress the whole night:

Bubbles: Cute, but a no-go. Sister D’orsay used them and I really don’t want a single element of our weddings to overlap. Right down to the bubbles. (This is not Sister D’orsay, below)

I originally had the idea of having our guests refold the ceremony programs into paper airplanes. The more I thought about it, the more I envisioned a cardstock airplane stabbing me in the eye”¦

(I really didn’t think I’d find anyone else having done this! Then I found this shot from Weddingbee PRO Anne Ruthmann!)

So, what are you using for this moment, and when are you having it? Any advice on how this would work for a single location?

@Miss Taffy: us too!! we are having our ceremony and reception in a museum so I’m not sure that our venue would really allow us to throw things at all! I don’t even think we can have our flower girls put petals in the aisle. I would love for us to have a grand exit, but maybe we will come up with something for our grand entrance as Mr. & Mrs.

I do think the paper airplanes is a cute idea though, Miss D. 🙂

If you do sparklers, think it through! The last wedding I went to did sparklers, but only had two people light them, so by the time they got down to the end of the line to light them the people at the front of the line had already burned out! Either give each guest several to keep them burning or some really big ones! When the bride and groom walked through we were just cheering and waving burned up sparklers!

We used applause as we left. Didn’t cost us anything, we had nothing to get ready and we didn’t have to pick up anything afterwards. It was fantastic, and I would advise others to think about it. The pictures still look good because you can see the joy on our guests faces as we left, even though they weren’t throwing/blowing anything!

We just…kind of…stayed. Why would you want to leave your own party early?

We are doing dried lavendar from packets that will be in our programs as we exit the ceremony. We’re having the ceremony in a garden so it seemed to fit. But since the reception is 25 yards away/as is the hotel walking down the isle just seemed like the only time.

I can’t remember where I saw it, but someone used those little fuzzyballs you can buy for crafts. They used the colors of their wedding, and then if you have a picky venue you’d just had to sweep or vacuum them up with a dust buster or the such.

How about during your first dance?

We might have everyone light sparklers for our first dance.

I’m loving the sparklers idea myself. We are having our wedding and reception at the same location so our grand exit will be at the end of the night. It would probably be too dark for any of the other options anyway. Hope you find something that you look forward to!

I love the sparklers ideas as well! We couldn’t have them at ours since we were in the mtns (apparently they’re a fire danger of some sort 😉 but I think they look awesome. And I would love twirling one if I were a guest
