Wedding Trends of 2009

It’s been another wonderful year here at Weddingbee! Sometimes it amazes me that I’ve read every single post that has gone up on the blog this past year. With about 25 posts a day on the weekdays, that’s at least 6000 posts! Over the course of the year there have been distinct trends that we’ve noticed, and we thought we’d take the time to share them as the year closes.

Rustic Chic

There has been a huge surge in barn and rustic weddings this year! The hive was brimming with rustic weddings (Mrs. Cowboy Boot’s, Mrs. Bunny’s, and Mrs. Espresso’s, to name a few), and 2009 was filled with beautiful receptions in nature!

The Espressos

Mismatched ‘maids

Brides of ’09 moved away from matchy matchy and gave their bridesmaids a little more freedom in dresses. While some chose a specific color, others chose to buck the matched bridesmaid tradition completely, going for pops of beautiful color.

Creative photobooths

Photobooths were taken to the extreme this year! With props, creative backgrounds (and foregrounds!), photobooths were practically a must in 2009.

Eye catching candy buffets

Amy Atlas and her incredible candy displays gave brides endless inspiration for gorgeous candy spreads this year.

Utensils were checked at the door as brides served an appetizing spread of pork and beef… and lots of it!

Long tables

Many brides favored the sophisticated look of long tables vs. round ones for their reception seating.

Pared down guest list

Whether it be due to the economy or the choice to share our weddings with only our nearest and dearest, many brides favored an intimate atmosphere over a blowout bash.

A lot of great trends came out of 2009… I’m sure the hive can think of plenty more! What was the biggest trend you noticed of this year? What trends do you think will be big in 2010?

Love this! I adore Powder Puffs’ multi colored bridesmaids…I was in awe of them!

I definitely have been seeing a lot of more vintage/indie weddings lately, filled with personal touches from the brides. I love that brides are going the non-traditional route sometimes! It doesn’t have to be a cookie cutter affair!

I think multi-colored BM’s dresses will still be in.
Oh, I also think that having late night snacks at the reception will be popular.

Ah! I had at least three of those in my 2009 wedding! I think simplicity and a lot more DIY will be big in 2010. Also I think there will be a trend towards more intimate weddings with less dancing and traditional wedding… stuff… I guess.

Birdcage veils and colored shoes were also big in 2009… can’t wait to see what 2010 holds!

I love the long table look but my the Mr. likes rounds…he is a very hands on groom and has opinions lol…love and hate it at the same time 🙂 2009 was also a huge year for the barn weddings…which could fall under the rustic chic I guess…I love that look also

@tea: I agree with you on all counts!!! I also think that 2009 brides were a bit more edgy than brides before them – every day, brides are finding innovative ways to showcase THEM (and their husbands-to-be) – can’t wait to see what comes around in 2010!!!
