Haley Mansion, Joliet, IL About Me: I'm a city girl who loves a good escape, so I'm planning a Chicago wedding outside of the city. I've been described as a quirky yet down-to-earth drama queen who loves fiercely. I used to be a scientist, but now I'm learning to navigate the world of non-profit organizations. I love cooking, blogging, shopping, and music, and movies (Hans Zimmer is my favorite movie composer). Mr. Kettle and I had a short courtship and now we have a happy home with our cat-who-thinks-she's-people, Belle. We spend our days and nights with good food, live music, video games, family, and friends. Our wedding has become this wonderful excuse to bring together hundreds of people we can't bear to be without.

Diving Headfirst into Wedding Planning

August 9th, 2011 @ 11:45 am by Miss Kettle

I jumped quite quickly into wedding planning. I already had some ideas of what I wanted from discussions with Mr. Kettle and my mother. He and I discussed things like wedding size, bridal party, officiants, and of course, wedding date.

Momma Kettle and I had a special understanding about weddings. We’d been discussing what I might want for my wedding for years. This is, of course, without a groom in mind, but that’s how we roll. We do what we want.

Reachin’ Out to My Girls

July 26th, 2011 @ 3:35 pm by Mrs. Honey

It had been quite a few months since I had touched base with my girls about where my wedding planning stood. Sure we would discuss bits and pieces over cocktails, but never all together and never exactly what I was thinking. Plus, since my last email to them, I had changed my colors and also changed the look of what I wanted them to wear. I had made a couple of trips to Hobby Lobby (which PS, is a 50-minute drive across state lines…yes, I have to venture to New Mexico, a whole different state to get craft supplies). I had visited Hobby Lobby and picked up some basic crafting supplies—paper cutter, stamps, card stock, bone folder—and I was itchin’ to do some craftin’. I decided I would create something to give to my girls showcasing my ideas. Being that I got too anxious and asked my bridesmaids to be in the wedding either via a phone call or an email, I thought this could make up for it.

I will preface this by saying that I did NOT have a clear vision when I started and, because of that, it took me four weekends to complete, with numerous hours devoted to how I wanted this something to look. There were three ideas I knew I wanted to portray to the girls: 1. My Vision, 2. My New Colors, and 3. the Bridesmaids’ Dresses.

I started with My Vision:

Keeping the Girls in the Loop

July 12th, 2011 @ 4:38 pm by Miss Doily

Since I am the one who is far away from my bridesmaids, I wanted a quick and easy way to let them know things that are going on. I talk to all of my girls regularly, but I make it a point to not really talk about wedding stuff when we are on the phone. I want our conversations to be about catching up and not all about the details of my upcoming nuptials, especially because out of all of my bridesmaids, only my sister-in-law (obviously) is married, so I know it’s something they don’t want to hear about all the time. After scouring online for ideas, I found many other brides in the same position who developed newsletters. Aha! Perfect!

I was an editor of my college and high school papers, so I know a thing or two about laying out a design. I borrowed a name that I saw on many of the newsletters (and it’s impossible to credit it to someone because I have absolutely no idea who started it), found some patterns and clip art that matched my colors, and voila:

Stand By Me

June 29th, 2011 @ 11:26 am by Mrs. Cucumber Sandwich

I have two Sammie sisters, so I knew I would always have at least two bridesmaids. Of course, I asked them immediately after getting engaged. This was before I discovered DIY wedding crafts and the hive. Now I have seen so many adorable and crafty ways to ask your ladies. I wish I could have a do-over.

I wanted to ask them in a cute way instead of just blurting it out over the phone, but the cards I DIY’ed were atrocious. Thank God I don’t have any photographic evidence of the cards, but even if I did I would be too embarrassed to show you. I sent them a card (let’s just say it was on computer paper folded a couple of times and handwritten) and two different books on being a bridesmaid.

A big chunk of my life has been split between NYC and Connecticut, and I'm finally heading down south to live with Mr. Marmalade. Our long distance relationship has been one adventure after the next, we've spent time in Texas, Louisiana, Florida, and Georgia, thanks to his military career. The last of my wedding party have no guilt associated with them.

Of my remaining bridesmaids, I met Bridesmaid N (AKA Rifle) the most recently. We were roommates for two years when I was in college. (We met sophomore year.)

About Mrs. Cannon

Now that you know the story of Bombshell, I can tell you the story of my guilt with Bridesmaid E. (I’m sorry, I cannot use the abbreviation BM. It instantly makes me think of an episode of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood where he discusses potty training. BM = bowel movement in my mind forever thanks to Mr. Rogers, and I can’t refer to my bridesmaids that way! So, that’s the reasoning behind my bestowing them with nicknames.) Bridesmaid E (AKA Pistol) is my other sister. She is eleven years younger than me and still in high school. With our substantial age gap, I have a weird hybrid sisterly and motherly bond with her. I love her to death and think she’s awesome. As she’s gotten older, we’ve become better friends, and I love hanging out with her. Obviously, she is going to be an awesome bridesmaid.

That’s why the mister and I bought a 1950s house on a charming street not too far from our childhood stompin’ grounds. This could also be the reason why our hometown is the scene where we are planning our super sweet, totally charming, BBQ-for-supper wedding that I never knew I always wanted. I DIE over DIY projects and live for vintage, heartfelt inspiration. I obsess over all things mid-century (from forks to furniture). Love is… cartoons and flea markets, and I am known to whip up a mean banana cream pie. I met the Mr. in grade school and after that boy took me for a spin on the handle bars of his BMX, I knew that things would never be the same again. Besides lovin’ my Mr., I also love to plan, sew and create, and that’s just what I’m doing as I navigate through the details, creating a laid-back day that oozes charm; one that will go down in (at least our) history as the Best. Day. Of all time.
About Miss Sweet Cream

I know that being a tween can be an awkward age for anyone. There can certainly also be a slim and awkward selection of dresses to chose from to be in someone’s wedding.

My littlest lady, FSIL Sweet Cream, is laid-back and go-with-the-flow, so I knew that she wouldn’t care too much about what I put her in for the big day. She trusts my fashion expertise! I know this because she always hopes that I pick out her birthday and Christmas presents and that they are some kind of stylish wardrobe piece. (Hey! I would too if I were the first girl with jeggings in my class, JUST as they were starting to hit the runways of middle school.)

Since older FSIL Sweet Cream sometimes steals things from her 12-year-old sister, I was originally thinking that the littlest lady could totally fit into a size 0 of the BM dresses…and then with a few stitches here and there and a pretty shell top that would go underneath, we would be in business.

About Miss Sweet Cream

After we began checking things off our big-picture list, we began to think of who we would want to stand by us on The Big Day.  Of course we knew just who…but the time-killer was how to complete the mission of the ask.  Being so stressed about the perfect ask for my BMs completely made me get just a glimpse into the intensity of planning a proposal. I realize that this wasn’t as big of a deal as a “proposal” where I’d have to get down on one knee, but I still wanted it to be special.

I realize it could have been easier just to ask. But I never let myself off that easy.

I loved ideas from all over the bridal online universe…

Last weekend I picked up a yard of yummy dark green fabric from JoAnn that was on sale for $5.40. Then I borrowed a pair of scissors and their cutting board to cut out four neat squares of fabric.

The graphic designer we are working with to develop all of our wedding stationery put together this awesome letterhead for us.

Bend to the Trend

June 6th, 2011 @ 10:18 am by Mrs. High Wire

If you are anything like me, you tend to shy away from the trendiest things because you just know, in a few years, they will look totally dated and out of style. Plus, hyper-fixating on every trend as it comes along doesn’t give you a chance to establish your own timeless, confident style. Also, keeping up with the trends is expensive and exhausting!

This topic can apply not only to your everyday wardrobe, but your wedding style as well.

I think the key is to find a balance of mixing timeless staples with a few trends thrown in for good measure. But those trends should only serve to enhance your wedding (or wardrobe).

Trendy vs. Being Original

I’ll just say this quickly: the only people who know about what’s popular in the wedding world are brides and wedding professionals. Lucky for you, the large majority of your guests are neither of those and won’t have even heard of any of the trendy elements you do decide to include. You get bonus points for being creative and original even though you may have some of the most popular wedding items around. Nice, huh?
