I found these candleholders that would make superior (IMO), more colorful subsitutues anywhere else you might use hurricanes, floral arrangements, or luminaries. I can see them grouped on the placecard table, lining a walkway, or used as or part of a centerpiece.
One of them is in my colors (albeit a saturated version of my colors). Too bad they’re on the pricey side…DIY, anyone? Too bad they’re not suited to my event, too, as I and my wedding are a not quite rustic enough. ![]()

Crate and Barrel’s Athena Candleholders are on sale for $11.95 - $17.95, regularly $19.95 - $29.95.

Check out these shades that can turn wine glasses into lamps! Approx $20 US dollars for 3.

Check out these diy candle decor. I think they’re kinda funny and cute! Definitely conversation pieces.

I’ve carved holes out of apples, oranges, and mini pumpkins and put tealights in them to create centerpieces, after seeing it featured on an episode of Martha Stewart Living many years ago. Solutions now offers a tool that makes carving tealight sized holes out of fruits and vegetables easy.
This is an inexpensive and fun centerpiece idea for bridal showers, rehearsal dinners, and even weddings. I like to entertain so I’m definitely ordering one today!

A couple months ago my venue caught fire.
It’s mostly OK - the fire was very minor and only a mantle was burned (a 100-year-old mantle, but still…it could have been worse). As a result, the owner (quite rightly!) no longer allows open flame, unless it’s floating in water (limiting us to floating tealights, and pretty much nothing else). Which is OK–I can certainly understand her reasons–but it sort of sucks for me. My centerpieces, buffet tables, everything is going to have to be redone. I can’t use my pretty silver candelabras, and I’ll lose the romantic candlelit look I was so hoping for.
So I’ve started researching online, and have come up with a few solutions.
I bought some LED tealights ($6.99 for 6 at Michaels) to use in my luminaries out front. But they’re too expensive for me to use all over, and they’re not very pretty–so I wouldn’t want to display them anyway.
For your double happiness themed wedding…

$25 for small set, $37 for large set at Unica Home.

I thought these were so adorable when I first saw them at Anthropologie. However, when I flipped it over to look at the price, I was shocked at how expensive they were - $23 and up!

I will be getting married in a pretty big church. Not only is it big, the style is modern with a lot of open space. I would have liked to get married in a church that had a cozier, more traditional atmosphere, but I am thankful nevertheless that ours is super nice and new. But now, I am starting to get worried about how I’m going to decorate this place.
In most traditional style churches, even if the church is really big, the ornate architectural design is usually enough so that ribbon and flowers are sufficient for decorations. The sanctuary of my church, however, is modern and has wide-open empty space that is very simple in design. In addition, the picture you see below is only about half of the sanctuary; the angle was too wide to capture the entire place. We do expect a lot of people at the wedding, but probably not enough to fill the entire church.

One of my mini projects-in-progress is white paper bag luminaries to line the walkway in front of our site. I wasn’t even planning on having them, but last time I was at Michael’s I was bored and browsing and thought, “Hey, what’s one more DIY? I can do it! This’ll be fast and simple!”
There are a couple styles: cutout and applique. The ones I’m making and using in my wedding are cutout, but I *promise* that sometime I’ll get around to instructions for the applique style.
In keeping with my “star” themed wedding, the luminaries have star cutouts. I had Daddy Blueberry make them on the computer; I believe he just inserted a piece of clipart and made it several sizes, then printed it on cardstock (sturdier) for me to use. Of course, you could use whatever shapes you want, though simpler is obviously easier. At some point in the future I may play around with more shape ideas, too.
Miss Snail first blogged about Cudge’s super affordable votive candles back in June.

$35.44 for 72 clear votive holders and candles!
At the weddingbee get together, Miss Daisy showed us the amber votives she purchased from Cudge after reading that post. The colored votive holders cost a bit more - $39.88 for 72 holders + $11.33 for 72 white votive candles - but still a bargain!

In my neverending quest to find the perfect shade of sea-green candle (can you say, PSYCHO?), I stumbled across what looks like a fantastic site. NJCandle has 49 different colors of pillars and votives. Thankfully, these are unscented too — who wants a room full of candle smell? Nice in an apt, bad with food! The pillars range from about $3 to $9 so they aren’t as reasonable as some other online shops, but this is the first place I’ve seen with such a variety in shades:

Red Envelope
Used to be $38 now $11.99

Pier One
Tea Light Holders
Used to be $15.00 now $8.98 for a set of 3 (comes in blue and green)
