Ceremony Bookmarks

February 19th, 2009 @ 1:54 pm by Mrs. Cheese

With less than three months to go until we get married, I’ve decided it’s time to start working on the part of the whole thing that I look forward to the most: the ceremony.

I was a bit uncomfortable about writing it; if I know every word, every passage, every sentiment, will I feel as engaged (no pun intended) during our ceremony?

But after much web surfing and some shower time (don’t you do your best thinking in the shower?), I’m very excited. I figure it’s much like live music: I may know every word and every note, but there’s just something special about hearing a song sung live.

So, as I get started (Wheeee! I’m excited!), I thought I’d share all of my ceremony links from Weddingbee. You can recreate my search by reading through every post tagged “ceremony” — or you can just use the list below.

Progress Is Made

February 18th, 2009 @ 5:22 pm by Mrs. Cheese

I promised to tell you more about the tent in the street, didn’t I? After the bridal fair, I finally got around to dealing with the “where shall we seat people” quandary. See, while we have almost two acres of land around and behind our house, much of it is wooded, and none of it is level. Okay, some of it is level, but it’s only 10 feet wide… and 60 feet long. No, thanks.

In a not-so-mature moment, I lost my sh*t and cried all over my loving fiance, who flexed his problem-solving muscles (you know, the ones that get bigger when girls cry) and suggested that we put a tent in the street. Um, what? Hey, that just might work! Because of the odd configuration of our street, the fact that we live just at the apex of the hilly street, and the fabulousness of our neighbors, it actually seemed like a viable option.

After a quick call to the city’s Special Events Department — a quick laugh at our plan and some delighted voices made me feel better about it — we were just about set.

The fabulous Jeff at All Occasions Party Rentals was kind enough to come out to our house to take a look, and after gamely holding back his shock at our plan, helped me figure out how to put an 80 ft by 20 ft tent in the street.

And thus it was settled.

The Making of a Color Scheme

February 17th, 2009 @ 11:25 am by Mrs. Cheese

I fought against having a color scheme. Oh, boy, did I fight it. I’m not sure why, but to me, the choosing of a color palette for our wedding was like giving in to the pressure to make it an event rather than a celebration. We don’t really color coordinate Thanksgiving, right? But we do tend to stick to certain colors for Christmas and Fourth of July, and I’ll begrudgingly admit that it’s rather festive. So I gave in.

Ta da!

The Making of a Color Scheme : wedding color schemes knoxville C1 c1

For months, I’ve been winging it when I’ve been asked about colors, most often saying, “Green like the grass, blue like the sky, yellow like sunlight, and any flowery colors.” While I love a nice, calm, restrained palette (like our original invites), in personality I’m more of an explosion of color. So is the mister.

Mourning the Fairy Tale

February 15th, 2009 @ 10:35 am by Mrs. Cheese

At some point, you discover that how you thought it would be isn’t how it is. Whether it’s work-related (dream job not all it’s cracked up to be?) or personal (not nearly where you thought you’d be at 30?), it’s tough and you have to mourn.

My personal fairy tale was that when I found the right person, all of my b*llshit would go away. With the right person, I thought, everything would be easy. I’d cease being too much — too loud, too emotional, too intense — even for myself, and I’d settle happily into the stability that a partnership would bring.

When my first marriage ended, I let myself believe that it was because he wasn’t the right person. Through our divorce, through living alone in a city where I knew nobody, through moving across the country alone and discovering that I was stronger than I gave myself credit for, I still believed in my fairy tale. I mourned every dream I shared with my ex-husband, every future vacation, every lost opportunity to do what we’d planned. I mourned the fact that I’d grown up with him and would never again be with a man who understood my roots as well as he did. I lost a lot in that divorce — relatives-in-law, a great man, our future — but I held on to my fairy tale.

Makeup Trial, Part I

February 12th, 2009 @ 11:57 am by Mrs. Cheese

Let’s talk about sensitive skin - AND HOW IT TOTALLY SUCKS. At the slightest irritation, my eyelids get nasty and dry and scaly. Sexy, I know. If the reaction is really bad, the corners of my eyes suffer the same fate. And while the rest of humanity (okay, okay, women in first-world countries) love, love, love mineral makeup, I get clogged pores. Fabulous.

A makeup trial was in order.

I started with MAC, playing hooky (ssshhh) one afternoon to drop by for a consultation. While it looked beautiful, thankyouverymuch, I had itchy eyes and flaky lids within an hour, so I didn’t take any pics before I washed it off. Bummer.

Plan B: Aveda. I heart Aveda. Ready? Here are the pics (yes, I’m a dork). And no, you don’t get before pics. One: why would it matter what I looked like before? Two: I forgot.

***This is NOT a test of the emergency Bee-roadcast System. This is for real.***

According this article, the price of stamps will go up by two cents in May.

The U.S. Postal Service announced Tuesday that the price of a first-class stamp will rise to 44 cents on May 11.

That gives plenty of time to stock up on Forever Stamps, which will continue to sell at the current 42-cent rate until the increase occurs. They will remain valid in the future regardless of rate hikes.

While the new 44-cent rate covers the first ounce of first-class mail, the price for each additional ounce will remain unchanged at 17-cents.

I’m thinking that two cents won’t break anybody’s budget, but forgetting and having all of your bee-oo-tiful invites returned for insufficient postage would be… ugg, horrible. So do take note!

***This concludes this Bee-roadcast System message.***

As Seen On TV

February 11th, 2009 @ 11:55 am by Mrs. Cheese

Yup. I’m one of THOSE people, the people who buy things they see on TV (hi, Mr. Ducky!). I still use the Super Chef knives I bought in 1997, sometimes even to cut through aluminum cans! Sorry, can’t find the link. Evidently they didn’t take the country by storm as expected.

In my defense, it’s hereditary. I’m pretty sure I saw Miracle Blade knives at my mom’s house over the holidays. Don’t even get me started on the wonders of QVC and HSN, okay?

After all the build-up, you won’t be surprised when I tell you that I own, and love, The Snuggie. I don’t care what The Today Show folks think! Okay, yes, they do look ridiculous, and I’m sure I do too, all five feet nothing of me wrapped in a slightly monk-ish looking blanket with arms.

What does this have to do with weddings? Consider this permission to gift your favorite couple with a Snuggie for their wedding. C’mon, you get the second one free! Do it. They’ll either love it or get a kick out of your wit.

Do you have any favorite As Seen on TV stories? Better yet, do you have a Snuggie?

While at the Aveda salon the other day getting my makeup done (oh, have I not blogged about that? *innocent look*), my stylist got to telling me about her sister’s fun and fabulous beach wedding. I was poised to hear all about the over-the-top resort or the phenomenal food when I heard this:

“They gave us these great welcome bags with all of their favorite candy in them. How cute is that?”

It’s time, dear friends, to talk about the biggest elephant in the room, the one we don’t talk about because, HELLO, it’s the internet and who’s nutty enough to be that honest? That would be me. (Yes, we took this picture during our e-pic session. Foreshadowing? Let’s hope not!)

I want to talk about the thing nobody talks about: fighting with your fiance during your engagement.

I don’t know why we all don’t talk about it more. Do we worry that it means we’re with the wrong person? (*raising hand sheepishly even though I know better*) Do we wonder if other people will tell us we’re making a mistake if they know that we fight as often as we do? (*raising hand*) Are we hoping that it will all be better once we’re married and the silly stressors like napkin colors and the dreaded words “and date” have gone away? (*raising both hands*) Are we afraid to believe that life together might be as full of petty disagreements and frustrations as it is now? (*standing up and waving both arms in the air*)

My Name Is…

February 3rd, 2009 @ 12:54 pm by Mrs. Cheese

I did it. I made a name decision, AND got an email account in my new name. Scary and super exciting! Then I told Mr. Cheese about it all… in reverse order. *cue the confused man look*

A friend recently changed her email address due to a divorce-induced name change and was unable to get one with her more common maiden name. Uh oh. I’m going from less common to more common. Way more common. Off to Gmail I went to see what name combos were still available, and firstname+maidennameinitial+newlastname was still available. I hit the Submit button on that puppy and pumped my fist in triumph!

Oh. I think I just committed to changing my name. Hmmm. *the thoughtful cheese look comes out* Neat!

Here’s how I decided:

  1. I am obviously not too attached to my maiden name given that I changed it the first time I got married.
  2. The only reason I wouldn’t change it this time is because of the emotional mess I experienced when I got divorced - and I’m not getting divorced again.

Easy’s Not Always Best

February 2nd, 2009 @ 11:59 am by Mrs. Cheese

I’ve learned a lesson. Well, okay, I’ve been learning a lesson, continue to keep learning a lesson, am trying to learn a lesson.

Easy is not always best.

Way back when we first got engaged, I came up with this crazy two wedding solution to keep my family from having to travel. Seriously, C.R.A.Z.Y., complete with repeating our vows days after we said our vows so that both sets of parents would get to see us speak our vows. Thought I learned the lesson.

Then I came up with this no wedding party solution to keep from having to deal with details that might overwhelm me. People love us, however (we’re lucky), and want to be included. I thought I learned the lesson.

And now, I’m going back and forth on groomsmen attire in order to keep them from having to go shopping just for our wedding.

Hello, lesson? Have we met? I think so!

Napkin Drama

January 31st, 2009 @ 3:30 pm by Mrs. Cheese

Napkin Drama : wedding knoxville reception Cheese1 cheese

… or lack thereof.

All along, my personal Bridezilla limit was getting all worked up making sure the napkins matched everything else. Now, don’t get me wrong, I admire and respect the use of napkins to continue a color scheme or theme throughout a room, but I’m at peace with the fact that I’m neither inclined nor capable of doing that without angst.

And yet, twice now I’ve found myself stressing over what color napkins go best with yellow or light gray or poppy colored linens. TWICE. I’ve debated making them myself (all you need is a Serger, and I’ve wanted one for years), buying them on eBay, or having them embroidered with our monogram (sweet, right?). I find myself driving and thinking, “Maybe light blue on gray? Wait, that might be too boring.”

This is crazy.
