Girls Just Want to Have Fun

June 24th, 2008 @ 5:31 pm by Mrs. Hummingbird

The night before the wedding (which is only a few days away - yikes!), Mr. Hum and I have agreed to spend the night in different places. He will stay at our ceremony/reception site with the boys - his dad, his brother Nick and our friend and videographer Alex (a.k.a. Zombiegroom), while I head over to Ancaster with my future sister-in-law Erin and our friend and other videographer Kim (a.k.a. Zombiebride) for a girls only sleepover.

Since I’m a pretty jittery person when I am excited about something, I decided to try and come up with a bit of a plan to keep myself distracted pre-wedding. And, because I am a movie fan, I figured what better way to do it than by watching some retro teen movies*? After all, how can a girl be nervous about walking up the aisle when confronted with the ridiculousness of 1980s fashion?

Anyway, here are some of the movies I’m considering:

Cinematic Debate

February 18th, 2008 @ 12:56 pm by Mrs. Canary

Mr. Canary and I love movies, though nowadays we don’t go as often as we’d like… but Netflix gets us through some good movie binges.

Last week, we watched Away from Her which is such a great film and Julie Christie’s performance was nothing short of perfection. I only hope to age as gracefully and beautifully as Julie Christie! Anyway, the story line for the film is that Julie Christie’s character, Fiona, has been happily married to Grant for many years. She develops Alzheimer’s and they decide that it is best that she stay at a managed care facility. In the haze of the illness, she forgets Grant and develops an affection for another patient, Aubrey.

The Accidental Husband

February 14th, 2008 @ 2:09 pm by Mrs. Lovebird

Happy Valentine’s Day bees and readers! So it’ll be my last valentine’s as an unmarried woman… Mr. Lovebird and I are guilty of overlooking this holiday the last couple of years. Today will be no different. He will be studying for his upcoming neurology exam and I will be at home treating myself to one of my click-flicks.

Too bad this movie isn’t out until later on this year, but it sure caught my eye.

After two years, he moved to my neck of the woods, and a year and a half after that, he proposed at the “place we fell in love.” I am a true perfectionist who enjoys designing and creating more work for myself, so wedding planning is my perfect outlet. Mr. Cupcake and I are both old souls, and we hope to weave that aspect of our personalities into our wedding day.
About Mrs. Cupcake

Not too long ago, Mr. Cupcake was away for a week on vacation with his parents in the Adirondacks. It was one of my busiest times at work, so I was unable to join them (and I kind of thought it made for a nice excuse to let Mr. Cupcake enjoy a vacation with his parents, whom he is extremely close to and whom I know miss him tons since he moved two hours away to be with me).

Hanging out alone on a Saturday night with nothing in particular to do, I came across the original Father of the Bride on t.v., starring Spencer Tracey and Elizabeth Taylor, from 1950. I stumbled across it just as it was starting, so I hunkered down and began watching.

No, No It’s 250 A Head

March 19th, 2007 @ 6:09 pm by Mrs. Snow Pea

Over the break, I was able to catch both Father of the Bride movies. I remember watching the 1991 version with Steve Martin in my early teens and thinking to myself, gosh, that’s an enormous amount of money. I could only hope to have such a “nice” wedding. The cynic in me also thought, why on earth would you spend that much on a wedding!? Especially when we can go to Chinatown for the banquet price of $50/pp.

Now, $250 per head (in the movie that includes EVERYTHING) doesn’t sound so bad. It doesn’t sound “so unreasonable”. When did this happen? When did I go from not wanting to spend more than $25 on shoes to thinking $2500+ for a photographer was a GREAT price!?? There’s something seriously wrong with me. I SAVED a wrinkly 40% off coupon from Joann’s just so I could get $9 dollars off a magnet sheet for our Save the Date cards. Now I write 4 figure checks out to vendors like it’s water!

As I continued to lay on the couch, the 1950’s version of Father of the Bride came on. Mr. Banks freaks out at the price per head for his daughter’s wedding.

Okay, prepare yourself now!
