I'm equal parts nerdy and cool... okay, mostly nerdy. I love satin bows, red lipstick, black & white graphic anything, the shine of sequins and the sound of a champagne "pop". My favorite books are The Portrait of a Lady, by Henry James, and Tender is the Night, by F. Scott Fitzgerald. I can also conjure a pretty good Patronus Charm. I started my appreciation for good red wine while traveling on the high seas, and it's only fitting that my passion for wine drinking led me to my Napa-bred honey. We bonded over bottles of Cabernet on my oceanfront porch and haven't looked back since. We're sealing the deal at a winery in the Napa Valley on a 'perfect ten' of a day!
After the best man cheers’ed to a long marriage and lots of babies, the groom took the mic and delivered his speech. He had been preparing for awhile and he personally thanked almost everyone in the room. I don’t know why I was so nervous for him to speak, but I felt like I was holding my breath the whole time. I was finally able to exhale when he raised his glass and toasted our guests.
Then suddenly everyone was looking at me! What? I hadn’t prepared to speak! I didn’t think brides did that! But there was an odd silence and a weird anticipation in the room so I stood as my mom gave me that look, as if to say, “your turn.” Well, I thought, I’m good at winging it!

After our first dance and my dad’s welcome speech it was finally time to eat. By this point I was starving and our dinner smelled so good! We decided on a family-style presentation, which all the guests ended up really liking. Our dinner was catered by Tra Vigne and included the following:

Seriously, you start to have such a good time that everything runs together! When I saw this photo I couldn’t place it in the night at all—and I loved it!
After our first dance I can’t recall what happened but there was commotion about our parents’ seating arrangements that I had to fix and I remember wanting to hurry because I wasn’t listening to my dad’s welcome speech. After a little switcheroo, I joined Mr. Barrettes at the front of my room and we had some laughs courtesy of Dad Barrettes. I love his purple tie and cummerbund. Read more…

I was a little hesitant about our first dance for a while. Once we both decided on the song (he loves country and I’m a pop girl, it was an easy choice) I wasn’t sure if we should go the choreographed route, or if we should just embrace our moment and let it be whatever it would be. As a professional dancer, I felt pressure for it to be really awesome. Would our guests be expecting a full-out performance?

With the guests seated in the barrel room, the DJ kicked on some fresh tunes and introduced our fun wedding party! Each couple entered to a different song clip and they totally danced their way in. So fun! Mike and John were my favorite. Read more…

Back in the bridal nook as a Mrs., I quickly changed into my custom-made dress that my MOH gifted me 2 weeks before the wedding. We also did a hair change and John plucked the gardenia from my ceremony hairpiece and pinned it back into my down-do. We probably spent a few minutes too many up there, but when you’re excited and in a small space with 2 of your best friends, things get silly and you forget that you’re suppose to be hurrying.
When we returned I was happy to see guests mingling in the courtyard and as night fell on V. Sattui, the twinkling lights added a gorgeous glow to our reception. Read more…

Even if you don’t necessarily want a cocktail hour, it happens anyway because after sitting through a ceremony, guests are ready to stand up and socialize for a bit. They aren’t quite ready to go and sit back down for dinner.
While our cocktail hour didn’t really last an hour, it was the perfect time for my costume change and for everyone to mingle around the winery. We offered three wines in the lower tasting room (directly behind where we stood for the ceremony): 2009 Early Harvest White Riesling, 2008 Gamay Rouge, and 2008 Amador Ridge Zinfandel. Each wine an easy favorite of ours. Read more…

As dusk fell on Napa, Dr. Houtz finished his sermon and it was time to exchange our vows. I love the traditional Christian wedding vows and neither Mr. Barrettes or I felt a strong urge to write our own. I would have most certainly blubbered though mine and my groom would have simply said, “I love you, you’re beautiful.” We were much better off exchanging the following:

It’s hard to remember how the ceremony began. The moments happen so quickly—I’m walking down the aisle, kissing my dad, then I’m holding Mr. Barrettes’ hands and standing in front of Dr. Houtz. The guests gathered to witness us tie the knot fade into a beautiful background and I’m absorbed into the moment. My eyes dart back and forth between my groom’s and the reverend’s and I’m just trying to remember to breathe. The thrill is beyond.
I could see the excitement in my groom’s eyes and I just loved standing there, holding hands, staring at each other in front of our friends and family. I could have stood there all night. 3 1/2 inch heels? Forget about it! I couldn’t feel anything but our hands touching and my heart racing. Read more…

Everyone was gone, the attention was elsewhere, and I was by myself looking over the scene. My vision was blurred by the veil and I could feel my breath quicken. The string music was easy on my ears and the murmur of the crowd made my pulse race. I whispered to no one, “This is so fun.”
I waited until I saw Darlene give me the nod, my dad stepping into place. The strings began to play that familiar refrain—this time for me. Read more…

The groom, best man, and reverend had the best view in the house as they watched the party make their processional down the aisle. From my bird’s eye view, I could just see each couple walk down the top set of stairs before they disappeared into the courtyard below me.
I’m so happy we decided on the string trio for the ceremony. I felt like their presence added so much to the moment.

Hello ladies, I’m back to formally introduce A Lakeside Storybook Wedding and unfurl the carpet for my RECAPS! Can we get a woo to the hoo, an amen sistah and an audible sigh of “fiiiiiiiiinally” up in he’ah?!?!
Today when the mister burst through the door with the news that the oh-so-longed-for CD of professional wedding photos had just arrived in our mailbox, I felt overcome with happiness to return to the hive.
So let’s start at the beginning of the Big Day.
Professor Paisley and I awoke together after a pretty good night’s sleep. Thank goodness insomnia-girl (yours truly) actually slept like a babe due to pre-wedding exhaustion … remember, our wedding was completely DIY and an at-home, backyard hootenanny. There was a LOT to do in the week leading up! I’m pretty sure the day before I was running from task to task and didn’t even stop to eat. Mama Paisley made a sandwich and chased after me to shove it in my mouth so I could eat. True story.
Anyway, on the morning of we stopped for breakfast and coffee on our way to drop me off at the hair salon at 11. Once there, I learned they were short-staffed and only had two girls for our group of six. Not all the ‘maids were arrived yet, and since there wasn’t much I could do about any of that, I decided to “let it roll off my shoulders” like mom always advises, and join my maid of honor at a nail salon next door for some luxurious pampering.

While our guests were enjoying the string music in the courtyard, my bridal party and I had our final moments together before I was a wife. Amy popped a little bubbly and I drank it from a wine glass. There was a moment where I sort of forgot we were there to get me married! Kicking it in a small space with five of your favorite people can quickly escalate into an impromptu party, so I’m glad we were reined in by the appearance of a photographer.
Meanwhile, the gentlemen waited in the tasting room…

While we were in the bridal nook, laughing, breathing, and affixing my veil, our guests began to take their seats in the courtyard. It was about this time that I wished I could be everywhere at once. Being the bride and having to be hidden away until your grand entrance, you miss the prelude! I could hear the strings begin to play and I just knew everything was beautiful.
The lanterns were a perfect touch and I didn’t know about them until I reached the end of the aisle. I told my aunt/florist I wanted hanging flowers, and she came up with the rest! V. Sattui has so much natural beauty that it only needed a few accents to become wedding-worthy. Read more…
