Growing up, I never really had pets.
Well okay, that is not completely true. The day before my seventh birthday, my parents brought me to the pet store and I picked out two goldfish which I named Alice and Abigail. Unfortunately, as is often the case with pet store goldfish, they both seemed to have contracted some sort of deadly fishy disease which caused them both to float to the top of their bowl within a month of purchase.
Heartbroken after two “burials at sea,” I wasn’t really interested in getting another animal companion and with family allergies, it seemed best if I remained pet free.
However, once I moved out on my own to my very own bachelor apartment in TO, it felt a bit weird being all by myself all the time, so when my dad’s friend’s cat had kittens and asked if I would like one, I jumped at the chance.
Getting a cat for the first time at 22 was a little bit strange and I wasn’t sure what to expect, but when I was handed Bettie for the first time, I knew she was mine.

When I posted my Cannes entry a few weeks ago, Mrs. Bee gave me static about the video’s exclusion of our latest adoptee. I assured her that we have big plans for him. Big plans for a big baby:
Meet Chaucer, our English Mastiff puppy. AKA, He to Whom We Are Unnaturally Attached. Or, He Whom We Cannot Stand to Be Away From. Or, He Whom We Could Not Possibly Imagine Excluding From the Most Important Day of Our Lives (high five, Miss Penguin!).

Yep. We’re one of THOSE couples. We’re including our dog in our wedding ceremony. No, she won’t be wearing a dress, but she will have our wedding rings tied to her collar. I have to admit though, Billie Jean is a little unruly. I once took her to obedience school, but she fell asleep in class almost every day. So I knew if she was going to behave at the ceremony, we’d better start training her well before the big day.
Every morning, Billie gets a Greenies dog treat. As of a couple months ago, we started to make her have to work for her treat. Here’s the morning ritual:
Mr. Penguin hand signals to Billie to stay:

Ever since we got our mini-dachshund Woofie, I’ve wanted him in our wedding. Mr. Kiwi, while usually enabling of my more “abstract” ideas immediately ix-nayed the idea. But ever since Woofie (Woofman) injured his knee, I’m even more hesitant to leave him with anyone. I want him in our wedding, and I want him spending the honeymoon night in our room with us. Well, not in the room, but in our suite. I mean, it’s not like we’re going to be doing anything that could mentally harm a dog.
To solve our “the dog isn’t formal enough for a wedding” problem, my mom got Woofie a tux. With tails. No joke. We already have a ring bearer, but perhaps he could accompany the mothers down the aisle? I know he’d have to sit with my dad, since other than Mr. Kiwi and I, he’s the only person who knows how to handle the little guy. Anyway, here is a picture of Woofman, not in the tux- it hasn’t arrived yet.
That off white thing behind him was one of his “bones” (that’s what we call all his stuffed animals and rawhide things), who we called Mr. Bear. Woofie worked that poor guy over- after a week the foot was chewed off.
(The marks on the rugs are ALL Woofie related, and steamed out following his potty-training)

Just when I thought the guest list was just about set, my parents had to go and get another daughter…
Her name is Eliza, and they just adopted her from a local shelter. We’re not sure what she’s ‘made of,’ but she looks similar to our other dog, Maxie (a schnauzer mix). Eliza is about 2 1/2 years old, and has had a rough life–she appeared at another shelter with matted hair, mange, malnutrition, and her litter of 10 or 12 puppies. But now her puppies are weaned, so my parents adopted her and are taking great care of her–last night my mom spent a couple hours working the knots out of her fur, and they just got her spayed. She’s also not completely housebroken, so they’re working on that.
During the planning process I knew who my ring bearer was going to be: my puppy Teddy. I didn’t know how I was going to do it, but Teddy HAD to be there because he’s part of our family.
I did a lot of research and read tons of articles about how it’s not a good idea to have your pet at your wedding. He might bark constantly, pee on the aisle midway or eat flowers. I trained Teddy for the last several months leading up to the wedding, escorting him around like I was his handler in the Best in Show. He would trot down our long hallway like the purebred he’s not.
I wanted Teddy to match the wedding party, too. FI was adamant about Teddy not wearing a wreath of flowers around his neck because he’s a BOY. Fine , FIzilla, it’s your wedding too. It took me several months to find the perfect outfit for him: a tux! He looked so handsome!
