Early on, I blogged about our difficulties in finding a photographer. After scouring the internet, we only had a couple of potential photographers who advertised that they worked with same-sex couples (as evidenced by the photographs on their websites). Unfortunately, they were out of our price range. One photographer that we met with told us that the photographer she used when she married her wife really did a horrible job. The photographer didn’t take any pictures of them kissing and she noticed that he averted the camera each time. I was feeling really discouraged about our options.
Then it occured to me to approach a friend of ours, Aki Mimoto. We met him in 2005 when we visited Vancouver for the first time and he took this photo of us.

Now that you know our photographers, onto the engagement picture discussion! We’re having them taken in 3 weeks, which is a huge “holy s@#$!!” in my world. We scheduled the session back in February, when June seemed like such a long time away…and here we are. How is it possible that it’s June?! When I looked at my calendar last week and realized the pics were fast approaching, I also realized I have nothing to wear. But I did have a jcrew gift card in my wallet…

I received an email from our photographer a month and a half ago asking for a detailed list of our wedding day events - from the time he needs to be at my place for my bridal pics to the locations where we want to have our first married couple pictures taken.
Because our photography is situated in the downtown core of Montreal and I live in the suburbs (about 35 minutes away), I don’t expect them to know the perfect spots for these shots. I originally wanted to find an abandoned house, you know with broken windows and ripped curtains, but I wasn’t able to find that. So I kept on looking. Well even living around the area, the task was not easy. After over a month of searching, I finally found a great spot.

Well hello, hive! Apologies for my week long absence. I’ve been drowning in work these days and also enjoying a much needed break over the long Memorial Day weekend, but now I am back! There is much to report, but first things first.
I was getting ready to discuss clothing options for our upcoming engagement pictures when I realized I’ve never written about our photographers…the shame! Like a lot of other people, photography was the most important thing to me aside from our venue. These are memories we’ll have forever and I wouldn’t trust just anyone to capture them. We interviewed several people in the Chicago area, and just couldn’t find a right match with style and budget. There were some that I loved, but they were too pricey. (The one we did consider seriously for quite awhile was Jeremy Lawson…his style is amazing, he’s super nice, and his prices are really reasonable. If you’re in the area, check him out).
I kept coming back to a bio that I loved, the infamous MrsJuliaGoolia. So eventually I looked up the photographer that they used, and found out that they’re in the St. Louis area. On a whim I sent them an email to see if they travel to Wisconsin and inquired about their rates. And can I just tell you, these people are wonderful!

Want an excuse to wear your wedding dress one more time or in the mood to do a trial run before the big day?
The amazing Scott Robert is running a workshop in New York City next week and needs a few brides for a Trash the Dress around the Big Apple. The theme of the workshop is “Everything you wanted to do at a wedding but couldn’t.”
Another one of my Memorial Day weekend trips was taken to Hobby Lobby. I love this store. It seems like every time I walk in there, whatever I’m looking for is 50% off. This trip was no different! I knew that I wanted to put about five picture frames on the guestbook table - two pics from my bridal portraits, and three from our engagement portraits.
Lo and behold, when I walked in and headed to the black pictures frames, they were 50% off! I chose 2 - 8×10s, 2 - 5×7s and 1 - 4×6 to put on the table. I believe I spent somewhere about $40 with tax for all five frames. Then, I took my cds of pics to the local Walmart and printed them out on the Kodak kiosk. $20 for all 5 photos, not too bad if I say so myself. In about 30 minutes I had all of the pics, headed home to trim them up and put them in their new frames.
Our big e-pic. Some people have complained because they don’t get why it’s so sunny and orange, but this is one of Mr. H and my favorite pics, so it was definitely in!

I know that I talk about my photographer a lot on here, but I just can’t help it! When browsing through my Google Reader this morning, I saw that a recent wedding he photographed was on Style Me Pretty. What is so awesome about this wedding is how completely unique it is, from cowboy boots to feathers in the flowers, toy guns to chunky turquoise jewelry … Country Chic all the way.
Sitting around waiting for our professional pictures to arrive (we get them tomorrow!), I’ve had plenty of time to get my Flickr account nice and tidy. In doing so, I’ve discovered the wonderland that is Picnik, Flickr’s photo editing tool. And oh, what a wonderland it is. If Flickr is my crack addiction, Picnik is my own personal meth lab.
Scenario 1: Say you’re like me, and you’ve got a load of crappy pictures taking up your hard drive. But they’re not so crappy that you want to dump them - maybe they’re all you’ve got from some important event, or they’re the only shots you have of that one night your girlfriend Prudence reaaaallly cut loose.
Scenario 2: You’ve been inundated with all the mediocre photos your friends and family took at your wedding. (Don’t feel bad for thinking they’re mediocre. After all, everyone takes mediocre pictures sometime.) Or you have wedding planning photos you can’t bear to part with, in spite of the fact that you have eight trillion professional pics as well.
I must be evolving. Over the weekend, I managed to delegate three things. I delegated two of them to my wonderful mother. First, I asked her to deal with the tent-for-the-ceremony-musicians issue (which she has already taken care of!). Second, I asked her to ask her rabbi (as I do not have a relationship with one where I live) to help me figure out some inter-faith wording for our ketubah. I then asked Mr. Cream Puff to get us a basket of disguises for the photobooth. I cannot believe it did not even OCCUR to me to ask Mr. Cream Puff to deal with the photobooth rental. He totally would have done it, and it didn’t even occur to me. I’m a weirdo.
Anyway, the photobooth situation is completely taken care of, deposit down and everything. Apparently they were very busy for a couple of weeks, and that was why I couldn’t get through to them. We are going with Party Booths–their booths look great and they were the only option I could find for under $1000. We decided to have it for our entire reception, which will be 5 hours…so we’ll be paying $1045 for the whole thing. It’s still a ton of money, but I think it will be worth it.
