I’m currently blogging from our ’backyard’ (I put that in quotes because it’s really just the small yard behind our house-turned-into-apartments, and because there are no gnomes. It’s not a real backyard without gnomes.)
Since you asked, our ring-a-ling-a-ding-dings:
I found our “something blue” idea from one of my favorite Philadelphia knottie weddings, MrsMek. She had these copper orbs that opened to reveal a glazed blue dish where she presented her and her husband’s wedding bands.

My attempt to get Mr. Monkey to wear a diamond men’s wedding band failed miserably (see old post)…so, we came up with a better idea.
Instead of buying a wedding band for Mr. Monkey…I’m going to try making one!
I’ve taken a few jewelry and beading classes here and there at the YMCA. And I’ve told myself that if I ever win the Lottery or win a crazy amount of money playing slots in Vegas one day…I plan to be a full-time “jewelry design class-taker”! (and, on the side, start a doggie day care where I can play with Juby, Gromit, and other cute dogs allll day)
Here are the details: I’ll be making a ring for Mr. Monkey at a jewelry/arts workshop in the city called “Make Workshop.” If you’re interested in taking jewelry design classes, knitting, or even learning letterpress…this place seems to offer it all. I haven’t taken any classes here yet, but I think it’s going to be really fun.

If all goes well, Mr. Monkey will be wearing this ring on September 8th…

This topic has been discussed ad nauseam, but of course this is a wedding blog, and it’s my turn to cover it!
A big checkmark off our to-do list! Wedding rings have been ordered! Last Friday during our lunch hour, Mr. E and I took a stroll to Jeweler’s Row, which is a small district in downtown Chicago with numerous wholesale jewelers. Mr. E has an old friend from grade school whose family owns a small jewelry store in this area, and his friend now actually works there full time. So it was an easy decision for us to go to her. We gave her our budget and told her what we wanted, and she said she no problem!
For me, I picked a shared prong 0.4 to .45 carat “almost” eternity band in 18K white gold. The reason I say “almost” is because she suggested leaving a quarter of the band plain without diamonds, so that if necessary, re-sizing in the future would be much easier. (Sounds like solid advice to me!) So imagine this ring below minus a few diamonds.

For Mr. E, we picked an 18K white gold hammered ring with a milgrain edging, which we’ve had our eye on for a while. Something like this…

What was our budget? $1100 for both rings. Mr. E thought this was a lot, whereas I thought this sounded slightly low for TWO rings, considering that I wanted *bling*!! But with Mr. E’s friend’s help, and the option to pay in cash (cash is king!), we were able to make this work!
When we walked out of the store, Mr. E asked me, “Well, what do people normally spend on their wedding bands?” My response was, “Errr… good question, I don’t have a clue. Sounds like a question for Weddingbee!” Miss Bluebell did some polls on wedding band costs here, and I checked a few generic budget guidelines, which stated that your wedding rings should account for 3 to 4% of your entire budget. Ours would be around 2%.
Soooo…
Miss Bluebell just blogged about Facebook. Well, now they have a feature where you can give “gifts” to your facebook friends. A slice of pizza, flowers, the random engagement ring

Mr. Snow Pea: “Wow, I could have saved a lot of money if Facebook came out with that sooner.”
Speaking of LOTR, here’s my preeeecious (taunting Miss Lemon with my Smeagol voice)
After we got engaged, I spent every waking second staring at my engagement ring. While my professors rambled away about thermal boundary layers, I sat at my desk, head tilted to one side adjusting my ring until the stone was perfectly centered on my finger. One day on WMMR 93.3 (That’s office!), a girl called in and said, “To the girl who sits in class and stares at her ring all day long. It’s not that big anyway!”
Mr. Lovebug can’t keep a secret to save his life. I learned this back when we were still dating, when, after his fifth vodka-RedBull, he told my future MOH exactly how he planned on proposing. After his seventh, he told me.
Half a year later, I knew it was in the works. Hints about a “big expenditure” and repeated trips to the safe gave THAT away (I swear, he turned into Gollum with that thing, locking his office door and checking on his precious, like, hourly).
One night while I was reading in bed, he came to me and said he wanted to see how the ring looked on my finger. I said, “What ring?”
“Ha ha,” he said.
“Well, take a knee, pal. ”
“Huh uh,” he said. “This is just a try-on. Completely unofficial.”
I put my book down. “Let me get this straight.” I said. “You want me to TRY ON my engagement ring before we’re engaged. Just to see how it fits.” Read more…
We finally bought our wedding bands today! That Knot checklist sure puts pressure on you to get things done. Unfortunately I have about eight more red exclamation marks to take care of this month.
Anyhow, back to the rings. I went with just a plain 2mm white gold band because I didn’t want to take away from my engagement ring - the diamond is so pretty. Mr. Pumpkin went with a plain band as well with the brushed finish in the centre and the shiny finish on the edges (I’m sure those of you in the wedding planning area know what I am talking about - it is a pretty popular men’s band these days). We are also getting them engraved, just our initials and the date - we couldn’t think of anything more unique that would stand the test of time.
Here is my ring and a picture of what it looks like on (man this picture makes my fingers look pudgy!):
he* Mr. Lime likes to call me a treehugger (by his standards, that is), so this tagline of Simply Wood Rings tickled me. These unique rings are good for people that have metal allergies (one of my bridesmaids can’t even wear platinum) and for the eco-conscious.
