So, as you’ve probably read by now, this week we’re doing a fun little feature that’s a twist on the currently popular book and movie The Secret Life of Bees. I’ve been thinking about my secrets for a few days now and have had a tough time deciding what to share with y’all… Perhaps I’d fill you guys in on how in high school I was incredibly holey (although I not quite to the extent that that gentleman has gone) or my former love of steel toe Doc Martens. Or maybe I’d share a ridiculous tale about how I got my tattoo (although I’m sure I could never top Pengy) or out my groomsmen as rock stars. However, none of these fun little antidotes are really ‘secrets’. I mean, they’re basically common knowledge for anyone who remotely knows me.

I am tired. I am disheartened. I am frustrated. Lately I’m just totally over the wedding. Not the marriage, mind you, just this behemoth of a party. Have I ever told you that I don’t even like parties?! Well, I don’t. I don’t like being the center of attention and I really don’t care for large groups of people.

I want to write about something other than weddings (I’m capable, I promise!) I want to piddle away my free time doing something totally random and spontaneous as opposed to the current routine of crafting and planning until I pass out at night. I want to pursue new business ventures and plan for our lives after the wedding but it’s just too daunting and I’m just too tired. Oh, and such vanities as personal appearance? Well, I used to be somewhat fashionable (if I do say so myself). Now? I don’t even know who had shows at fashion week or what they featured and I haven’t purchased a single item of clothing in the last 6 months that wasn’t earmarked “wedding”.

I am fascinated by temporary time periods in people’s lives (i.e. pregnancy, college student, bride-to-be). For some reason, themed items get me every time. Basically slap the word “bride” on something and I’ll end up purchasing it.

Ever since I figured out what a gocco was I’ve wanted one. I’ve been entertaining thoughts of beautifully handmade invitations and/or an endless supply of matching paper accessories a la the incredible Kristina of A Lovely Morning or our very own Mrs. Penguin.

Unforch, those dreams have been dashed by the recent shortage on gocco supplies and my free time and sanity. Boo.

Remember how I was going to pick Jackie up? Yeah, not so much. Turns out the wrong size was ordered. Let’s just say it was not pretty and more than a little traumatic.

We’re still not 100% sure how this happened but my powerful deductive reasoning skills lead me to believe that the shop ordered the dress in my street size and not the bridal size. There’s always the side chance that I’ve gained EVEN MORE weight since the initial ordering of the dress. However, with the help of Fitday I’ve been tracking my weight and nutrition and it looks like I’ve lost three whole pounds (woot!) since then. Either way, the damn thing was 2 sizes too small, and there is no way it is going to fit. Ever. All I wanted to do was cry. Or smoke a cigarette. Or both. But, I didn’t do either one.

I am a white girl—like, seriously pale. I spent the better part of my later teens and early twenties frying myself in the hot Texas sun, or even worse, in the beds.

As the big 3-0 marches closer and closer, I’ve been attempting to change my unhealthy ways. This includes my beloved fake and bake outings. This does not include looking pasty. Thus, the search began for a decent self tanner.

Over the years I have tried so many different brands of self-tanner, and I’m always keeping an eye out for a less stinky formulation or a lotion that won’t streak. About a week ago I was at the grocery store and remembered that I was out of body lotion and self tanner. Being the resourceful bee that I am, I thought I’d do a little digging and see if I could combine the two in one convenient package.

My mom is a fabulous seamstress. When she was a teenager, her mom taught her and her sisters how to sew. I remember my mom recalling memories of outfits she’d made more clearly than the events she wore them to. While her Mary Quant and Betsy Johnson wannabes were pretty sweet, they could never compare to my favorite piece of hers, her wedding dress. That’s right, folks, my mom made her own wedding dress.

So, I got a call the other day from the ladies at Unbridaled… guess who arrived just in the Great State of Texas? That would be my new best friend, Jackie, all ready for her couture makeover. More on that to come…

I’ll admit it – I have difficult skin. It’s sensitive, oily, prone to break outs and flakiness. Ugh. I’ll also admit that I’ve spent much more than I should on countless products that promised to make it all better, but never really did. I have tons of half used bottles of lotions, tonics and potions (it almost sounds like I’ve been visiting a snake oil salesman…) that never fulfilled the promise of peaches and cream.
