A Family Affair

June 24th, 2008 @ 12:52 pm by Mrs. Hummingbird

With our wedding coming up, I’ve been thinking about the past weddings in my family, specifically, my parents who are celebrating their 27th anniversary this August. They met back when they both lived in Montreal and worked for a company there. My mom was friends with my dad’s cousin and had seen him around the office a few times when he worked there for the summer, but she had never talked to him before. Then, while waiting for a train at Union Station in Toronto, she noticed him and went over to say hello. They dated for a while before they both got sick of all the political unrest in Quebec due to the referendum and made the move to Toronto. They had only been in Toronto a little while when one night, when they were reading in bed, they broached the subject of marriage and decided to get engaged. Six weeks later, in the August of 1981 they were hitched.

Anyway, she gave me a couple of their pictures so I scanned them to share with you Weddingbee fans and here they are! Mom and Dad Hummingbird’s wedding!

About Mrs. Hummingbird

Our Hummingbird Geek Fest continues with our specially design programs! Since I have a background in journalism and spent some time after my college graduation working for an alternative arts newspaper, Mr. Hum suggested that we design our programs after one of Toronto’s popular weeklies. So, we got to work. Playing to our strengths, Mr. Hum worked on the layout and I wrote the program’s contents.

Extra! Extra! Read all about it! It’s the Hummingbird Times!

One Week…

June 21st, 2008 @ 5:26 pm by Mrs. Hummingbird

After months and months of organizing and planning and crafting and blogging (I started on this blog way back in September, I’m such an old timer!), I am officially one week out from my wedding.

I’m feeling many things right now. I’m excited. I’m happy. I’m nervous. But mostly, I’m in disbelief.

For so much of our planning, the wedding has felt like this incredibly hypothetical thing. We were doing and buying things for it, but there always seemed to be a buffer of time that kept me thinking, “There’s still time, there’s still time.”

But you know what I realized last night in the middle of what I hope was our last wedding emergency *Miss Hummingbird knocks on her own wooden head*? There is so not time anymore.

Out of Character

disbelief Rob from High Fidelity experienced when he heard Marie DeSalle’s version of a Peter Frampton song

Yesterday, after about four hours of fiddling about, I finally managed to nail down the song order for our iPod wedding reception. It required patience, a keen ear for transitions (I listened to the first ten seconds and the last ten seconds of just about every song multiple times) and a bunch of caffeine, but at the end of the long night, I felt really happy with it.

We Will Still Need A Song

June 18th, 2008 @ 5:01 pm by Mrs. Hummingbird

Over the course of a relationship, two people change each other. They share their loves and their personal experiences and through these exchanges, their personal opinions and tastes are altered. As I’ve written before, Mr. Hum and I have shared a lot over the four years we’ve been together and I think that this kind of sharing has been for our better. We’ve introduced each other to and influenced each other’s opinions about things like food, video games, literature, tv and movies and it’s been great.

However, one area where our tastes are vastly different is music and I think, no matter how much exposure we have to each other’s CD collections, this is unlikely to change.

Basically, we sit on two ends of the spectrum. Mr. Hum has very specific music tastes which lie in either the spastic ska style (think along the lines of Less Than Jake and Goldfinger) or the “I am woman, hear me ovulate” genre (Tori Amos and Sarah McLachlan are a couple of the big figureheads).

I’m a Bride, Not a Doormat

Mr. Hummingbird and I are both fairly easy going people. Throughout the planning of our wedding, we have tried to be as conscious of the feelings of others as possible, because we love our friends and families and we want them to have fun and enjoy themselves over the course of our big day.

In-Law Inspiration

June 16th, 2008 @ 5:20 pm by Mrs. Hummingbird

Just after our one year anniversary, I accompanied Mr. Hum to his brother’s wedding where he was the Best Man. They got married at the lovely Old Mill in Ancaster, having the ceremony outdoors and a bunch of their pictures taken by the Old Mill’s waterfall before the rain, which had been threatening to fall all day, finally came pouring down and we all ran for cover inside.

While I am crossing my fingers, such as they are, that we Hummingbirds will not be plagued by rain, Mr. Hum and I were inspired by the fun and relaxed tone of their wedding and have taken a few cues from them during our own wedding planning. One of the big things we (well Mr. Hum more than me) appreciated about their wedding was their men’s attire.

We are not uber formal people and the idea of having the guys in tuxes and whatnot for our wedding seemed a little bit too much for our tastes so, like FBIL and FSIL Hummingbird before us, we opted for a more casual look.

A Blank Canvas

June 16th, 2008 @ 10:24 am by Mrs. Hummingbird

Or more appropriately, a blank tent.

Mr. Hum’s dad graciously arranged for us to have a 40 x 40 tent for our wedding reception. It’s a pole tent so it’s got a peaked roof and aside from the basic interior lighting included in our package, it’s pretty much bare inside in terms of decor.

As things are winding down in terms of wedding planning and as I am a teeny bit on the poor side from paying for all the other wedding bills, I know I want to spruce the tent up, maybe add some colour or whatnot, but I am also on a reasonably tight budget and want to keep things under control money wise.

So, since I know we’ve got some pretty crafty DIY readers so I’m shining the Bee Signal into the sky in hopes of some aid. A couple hundred bucks and a big white tent - what would you do?

Two Happy Events

June 28th not only marks Mr. Hum’s and my anniversary/wedding, but as I have discovered, another special occasion. You see one of Mr. Hum’s cousins, Kara (one of the constructors of the ribbon hat that ate Toronto) is also celebrating a milestone - she is turning 17 years old.
