Trying to plan a wedding in a new city, not to mention a new country, is tough, but the fact that we can get legally married here more than makes up for it! The wedding will be an opportunity for most of our family and friends to see our new city for the first time so it will be both a wedding and a reunion. Besides my future wife, I am also madly in love with a good bargain, Swedish pastries, Tivo, and my two dogs and calico cat (in no particular order).

Thank You to Our Friendors!

August 11th, 2008 @ 11:55 am by Mrs. Gingerbread

Before I go any further into my wedding recap, I have to stop to acknowledge the people who made our wedding spectacular. To borrow Mrs. Hummingbird’s term the wedding would not have been possible without the help of our volunteer team of Friendors. We didn’t have a wedding party, but we did have a lot of people who were willing to pitch in and in doing so, they saved us our sanity and a lot of dough. Friendors= priceless!

Photographers

The friendor jackpot all started with Aki. You may recall we asked him to take our photographs because we’ve always been big fans of his work. He takes photographs because he loves it, but in order to preserve the joy of photography, he keeps it as a hobby. He agreed to take our wedding photos, but refused payment. We were completely shocked and totally grateful at his generosity. As if that wasn’t unbelievable enough, Aki then told us that he had a friend, Carlton, who is a great photographer that is just getting into the wedding biz, who’d like to volunteer too. What?! Two volunteer photographers?! (I should mention that I wasn’t a Weddingbee blogger when all of this generosity came rushing in my direction so it was totally genuine!)

About Mrs. Gingerbread

In order to get from downtown Vancouver to our rain forest ceremony site, we had to drive through Stanley Park. We were especially excited that our guests would have to drive through Stanley Park, since it really is one of Vancouver’s highlights. Given that our two talented, creative photographers were in the chase car behind us, we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to take advantage of the cool vintage car + Stanley Park + two brides. Here is an album page that Carlton put together from the impromptu photo shoot we did on the way to the wedding.

I’ll go ahead and show you some of my favourites in full size after the jump.

Sometimes, when it’s almost midnight, and you still have twelve more hand sewn felted birds to make, dark little niggling thoughts can creep into your brain. Thoughts like,

“are these birds really and truly cute? are people just trying to humour me? will placing these birds in our twig and flower centrepieces be way over-the-top…are my little feathered friends…TACKY?”

I’m going to turn to the only people that could possible have any fathom of an answer for me. We are having 82 guests, and an hour between the ceremony and the dinner (all at the same location). Right now our hors d’oeuvres menu looks like this, which includes fancy ones and platters, but I’m wondering if it’s overkill. I have no concept of what 82 people could eat in an hour, and afterward we are having a buffet dinner…

The Big Day: Miss GB 2.0 Gets Ready

August 7th, 2008 @ 11:50 am by Mrs. Gingerbread

Meanwhile, across town… Miss GB 2.0 went to Blo to get her hair done. This place specializes in styling hair. That’s all they do and they do it well.

I also scheduled time for her to have lunch with her friends. Wasn’t I a considerate wife-to-be?

The Big Day: Getting Ready

August 6th, 2008 @ 3:57 pm by Mrs. Gingerbread

Where was I? Oh yes, last time I told you about our Rehearsal Dinner. Now it’s time for the big day! Get ready for photo overload.

I got a great night of sleep and woke up at 7am. This gave me time to chat with Mama Gingerbread before Sister Gingerbread showed up to take me on my wedding morning errands. Mama Gingerbread stayed behind to work on the bouquets.

Thank you everyone for your kind comments on yesterday’s post! After going through the flames of one certain very hot place in order to get them finished, it meant a lot to have so many people love them as much as I did!

However, I totally did not finish that post, because I forgot one of my very favourite components of the invitation suite…

So Ikea Has These $1.99 Vases

August 1st, 2008 @ 11:54 am by Mrs. Milkshake

ms1

Planning our wedding entirely by myself has had its advantages. Using our own money for the wedding enables us to call all our own shots and allows for us to avoid many discrepancies with my own family as well as my future family. However, the value in delegation is something that no bride should do away with at the two-week-to-the-wedding-mark. I asked my mom to make a big trip to Ikea to buy these $1.99 vases ($2.99 in Canada), to help me out, and help include her in the wedding. Instead of buying the vases, she noted that “those opaque vases you’re talking about are so ugly, I’ve already planned to have tall clear vases from Costco and fill them with gelling-water-medium and hydrangeas, they’ll look much better.”
