I dream of becoming a best selling novelist like Elizabeth Gilbert or Julie Powell (a girl can dream, right?), and love long road trips, a beautiful countryside, music, blogs, books, and all things vintage/thrift/antique/or homemade. I’m a Virgo, i.e. overly sensitive, emotional, and critical, and there’s no such thing as short and sweet in my world. I want to say and do it all. Mr. Brooch grounds me. I point where to go and he figures out the way. He’s a pragmatic fancy-pants who enjoys video games and movies. We both adore our mutt, Rocky, and spending time with our amazingly supportive family and friends. We’re planning a garden wedding with a formal reception with lots of whimsy and unique, Southern-inspired details.

My Latest Obsession: Cathedral Veils

November 3rd, 2010 @ 12:01 pm by Mrs. Brooch

I was never a huge fan of veils. Not at first, anyway.

I knew I’d be wearing one, though. Granny’s wishes. We’re really close and I’d do anything for the woman, including wearing a veil and a blusher on my wedding day.

It was one of those things I figured I’d warm up to and I definitely have. With each dress, I put on a veil knowing I’d have to eventually buy and wear one, all the while not giving the type of veil any thought at all.

I never even knew there were so many to choose from!

Dear Wedding Veil,

To Veil or Not to Veil?

September 22nd, 2010 @ 9:06 am by Mrs. Meerkat

The great veil debate has finally ended in the Meerkat household.  The debate only lasted six months. It seems like a long time to decide on something so simple, but when tradition is involved, things get a bit more complicated.

Back when we first got engaged, Mama-In-Law Meerkat offered to let me wear the veil that had belonged to both her and her mother. Including myself, that would make three generations of the Meerkat family who would have worn it. I was pretty well set on wearing it until I started thinking about hairstyles. I knew right away the kind of style I wanted:

Hair Inspiration = Veil Indecision

September 16th, 2010 @ 10:43 am by Mrs. Hippo

While my plan is to do my own makeup for the wedding, I will need someone do my hair. I know my limitations, and my hair is definitely one of them. Seriously. I can look passable for work or a night on the town, but for our wedding, not so much. It’s time to call in the professionals.

I’ve been growing my hair out since we got engaged, so I feel like it’s only appropriate to do an up-do. Not to mention that it would be a treat for me to see my hair pulled up in something other than a haphazardly tied hair rubber band. Here are the inspiration photos I plan to take to my hair trial:

Soon after her offer, I received it in the mail (along with the most adorable card) and I couldn’t wait to try it on. After unwrapping it I proceeded to prance around the apartment in the veil and asked Mr. L’s opinion. His response was, “It looks a little bit dark…don’t you think?”

Veil Love

August 16th, 2010 @ 11:20 am by Mrs. Starfish

I was so indecisive about my dress in the beginning, but once I put on a veil, I felt like a bride. I felt classic and romantic and knew I needed to wear one on the wedding day. I tried on a few kinds, but nothing felt as special as the cathedral length styles.

I don’t think any other veil compares when it comes to a Rhode Island coastal wedding. I love photos of veils blowing in the ocean breeze. It looks so magical and romantic.

Where’s Your Veil?

August 5th, 2010 @ 4:11 pm by Mrs. Seashell

When Bridesmaid Carrie got married a few years ago my Grandmother was unable to attend the wedding. Much of the event was outdoors and with all the uneven surfaces, and it just wasn’t ideal for my often unsteady Granny. However, she wanted to catch a glimpse of Carrie and me all dressed up before heading to the church, so she swung by Carrie’s house before we departed and got the chance to ogle over how beautiful we looked. She wished Carrie well and sent us off with lipstick kisses on our cheeks. Then, just as she was pulling away, she rolled down her car window and yelled to Carrie (in her Rhode Island accent), “Where’s your veil?”

Oh, Granny, subtlety isn’t your strong suit. Carrie sweetly explained that not all brides wear veils these days.

This has become a classic Grandma wedding story. Every now and then we just randomly yell, “Where’s your veil?” in a loud Rhode Island accent when referring to Carrie’s wedding. Maybe you had to be there. Anywhoo…

Veil? Check!

August 3rd, 2010 @ 5:36 pm by Mrs. Cardigan

Alright, alright. The post office is forgiven. They must have noticed the anger and frustration in my post yesterday, because when I went to check the mail yesterday afternoon I had a cute little box waiting for me!

But, before I show it to you, I want to back up and explain how I chose it. You see, I don’t know if I’m the only one, but when I first got engaged all of the veil options out there completely overwhelmed me. Mantilla? Cut edge? Fingertip? Cathedral? What did it all MEAN? On top of all the options, there was the price. $300 for a piece of tulle attached to a comb?! Are there threads of gold sewn into the fabric?

Just thinking about what type of veil to get got me all sorts of worked up. How was I supposed to chose one?

Post Office + Wedding Planning

August 2nd, 2010 @ 4:14 pm by Mrs. Cardigan

= One big, giant headache for Miss Cardigan.

Let me tell you all about it. You see, I’m moving. And about two weeks ago, being the good, diligent planner that I am, I decided to set up mail forwarding. I had it set to start on the day we move in, and I figured we were all good to go.

This was right around the time that Mrs. Cola was mailing her beautiful headband to me. In this general time, I also ordered my veil. Then, suddenly, I began to notice that while Mr. Cardigan was receiving a normal amount of mail, I was not.

In fact, I wasn’t getting any mail at all. Normally, that’s not that unusual, but since we’re, you know, planning a wedding, I’m getting a lot of mail. A week went by and I still didn’t have the headband, or my veil. Then two weeks. I was getting antsy, so I checked the tracking information on my veil—and it said it had been delivered. Only, I most definitely did not have it. So I called the post office. Guess what? Turns out my postman had decided to start forwarding our mail TWO WEEKS before I asked him to. So my mail was going to the new duplex instead of to my current apartment. He left a message on my phone and let me know that he was so sorry, and that he’d get my mail back to me ASAP.

Down To The Wire DIY: Embroidered Veil

July 15th, 2010 @ 12:11 pm by Mrs. Cola

As many of you know, veils are freakin’ expensive. For just a little piece of tulle! I know when I was dress shopping, and the sales clerks would shove a veil on my head, I would flip out about the $150+ price.

And of course, with all the many crafty projects for our wedding, I thought, “sure, no problem, a DIY veil, easy-peasy!”

Uh, yeah. There’s a reason why veils are so expensive. They’re HARD to embellish!

If I’d wanted a plain tulle veil it would have been much easier. Or even a ribbon or crystal trimmed one. But oh no, not me, I wanted an embroidered veil!

So. Here are the details on how we made a two layer embroidered fingertip length veil. There are already a lot of great posts out there on the veil construction itself, so I won’t touch too much on that, but focus more on the preparation for the embroidering.
