I’ve been doing a lot of wedding website trial runs lately. I started out with The Knot, moved onto WedSpace, and ended up with My Wedding, which I still wasn’t happy with. Now I don’t need the créme de la créme when it comes to a website, but I like to customize, and make things colorful and personalized. And, I don’t know, justify something to center if I really want to. None of the aforementioned websites were giving me that option, and I was getting mad. Fox growl.
So then I thought, what if I recreate a Blogger (or Wordpress) site to make it look like a normal website, and have that be ourwedding website? I basically know how to edit and format Blogger to make it do something close to what I want, so I gave that a go. Then I kept hearing how fantabulous Wordpress was, so I tried that. And failed miserably. I don’t know you all do it.
Back to Blogger I went.
I’d like to say I was relatively successful. Here’s a preview of what I have so far!
It’s still a work in progress, but I have to say that I’m kind of loving it. Our colors will (should) run along this general theme:
I realized that the other day I’ve written about bargains, and reusing supplies from other weddings/events, but didn’t mention the sites I scour regularly for great deals… so, in no particular order, here are some of my faves!
I found my mason jar maven, and DOC on IndieBride.com in Kvetch (their boards section). They have threads for most major cities and states.
I will always sing the gospel of Craigslist. I’ve found our living room furniture, several jobs, apartments, and lots of other random things via this brilliant site. It takes a while to wade through but sometimes the prizes are well worthwhile. Always check the free section, too. Once I saw someone giving away a working hot tub!
I’ve gotten some great leads, and found resources for free engagement photos and photo slideshows via Weddingbee Classifieds and their local boards feature.
Etsy.com is an amazing site for artsy crafty types to showcase their skills and sell their wares. Lots of artists specialize in recycled and eco-friendly designs.

Daily Candy is one of the first emails I open every morning. Haven’t heard of it? I couldn’t think of a better description than the one the website provides:
DailyCandy, a free daily e-mail newsletter and website, is the insider’s guide to what’s hot, new, and undiscovered - from fashion and style to gadgets and travel. As useful as it is entertaining, it’s like getting an e-mail from your clever, unpredictable, and totally in-the-know best friend. The one who knows about secret beauty treatments, must-have jeans, hot new restaurants - and always shares the scoop.
How is this revelant to weddings? They just published 14 different wedding guides full of all kinds of goodness.
In the wedding guide for Everywhere they suggest buying the Isaac Mizahri strapless sheath (for $89.99) and replacing the pink sash with some vintage ribbon or trim.
Window shopping… online!
New York Magazine has this awesome feature called Shop-A-Matic which features the latest trends in everything! I get so excited when I get one of their emails, but I’m sure my wallet (or Mr. Canary) doesn’t.

There are a lot of places to find inspiration for weddings- a whole host of blogs that focus around design and/or weddings as well as the website of bridal magazines. One of my favorite blogs, however, is one that deals strictly in fashion and photography- The Sartorialist. Consider the possibilities that a single picture could have:

A color palate of rich greens, cocktail reception with lots of martinis. Not a whole lot of flowers, maybe some candles.
In my constant search for all things wedding, I recently found out about this new wedding blog/resource called Bride-O-Rama. My favorite feature is “Wedisodes”. Basically, each week they post a video-interview of a bride after her wedding. These are real brides (not always the lavish affairs that fill the bridal magazines–and I mean that as a positive thing!) and give you tips that you can really use.
Here’s their first episode:

Have you guys heard about Project Wedding? It’s a website made up of vendor reviews, forums, and photos for brides (and grooms) in California, New York/Jersey, Chicago and Hawaii! They expect to have more locations soon.

Last night I spent a good hour or so on the site, looking up reviews for our ceremony site and reception venue, favor ideas and alteration places. Also, I was glad to know that the bakery we chose to make our cake (Torrance Bakery) got better reviews than the other bakery we were considering. It’s nice to feel validated, isn’t it?
I recently stumbled across a lovely blog called Toast & Tables in my surfing adventures. Sarah Dennis, the blogger behind it all, covers everything from crystal to china to linens for “the well-dressed table”. Her beautiful image layouts will help inspire your wedding tabletops and registries. It’s one of my new favorite reads!
Her recent Cape Cod Inspired Table Setting post reminded me of Miss Corn and her New England clambake reception! ![]()

kay, okay. I just wanted to alliterate. Ignore the bridal squeal at the end of the title. It’s been a long while since I’ve blogged due to searching high and low for an apartment [Blugh. Yes, that's a word.], finding one [whew], moving Mr. Lime in [meh], starting to pack my own place up [double meh, but at least I have a month to move], squeezing in my company retreat to Napa [Whee! For real this time!], dealing with some family health issues [:(], and all this while both of us were extraordinarily busy at work [as in busier than we've been in over a year]. Gotta love how life always works that way. Needless to say, the wedding planning got pushed to the back burner for a bit. Fear not, for I am back with a few fun updates!
So to the real update. My most amazing roommate [Only for another month. *sniff*], who freelances on the side [she's in the middle of a re-design of her site] is very close to finishing our website so it can finally go live. Up until last month, I was procrastinating majorly on it. I thought I could DImYself despite the fact I haven’t designed a full website in about 5 years. Yes, web technology has advanced quite a bit since then. I designed the concept and pages I wanted in Adobe Illustrator, then she translated it into web-ready fun for me, and finally she took my basic layout and ran with it, producing much cooler features than I would have thought of on my own.
Just a quick tip –
For those of you in California (especially the Los Angeles area), there are two resources you should be aware of when planning your weddings. They were absolutely invaluable to me when planning, and I know that they’ve been helpful to lots of other ladies.
For anyone who has been to Borders, I’m sure you’ve seen this giant guide laying around the wedding planning section. Save your money for something else you’d enjoy better because this resource is available for FREE online. Plus, when you use their site online, you can find locations by search criteria (metropolitan area, catering preferences, capacity, etc.).
They’ve expanded the guide to also include a search for services (coordinators, florists, etc).

Recently Seattle based June Bug Weddings contacted us to say hello, so I clicked over to their site and was really impressed! Started by 3 photographers, the gorgeous site is filled with local vendor listings (who join by invitation only), pictures from real weddings, a blog, and more.

This got me thinking about other great local wedding websites. In New York there’s New York Magazine and LIWeddings. And Miss Lime mentioned quite a few California resources in her venue search post, as listed below.
Tell us about the great local wedding planning websites in your neck of the woods, and we’ll update this post to include them!
One of our favorite blogs, Hostessblog, has just launched their all things entertaining website, Hostess With the Mostess. It’s filled with gorgeous bridal shower themes, gift ideas, and more. Check it out!

Ok. Let’s be candid about this. How many of you like your mother-in-law (MIL)? Anyone? Anyone?
I’m just kidding. I know there are plenty of you who get along fabulously with your MIL. For the rest of you, I found a hilarious blog called MILDEW (Mothers In Law Do Everything Wrong).
They’ve recently moved to another site (click here), but all of their old stuff is on the MILDEW site. I have been laughing my ass off for the last hour reading this stuff (I should be working…. oh well).
Enjoy!
People Magazine’s first ever wedding issue hits newsstands on June 15th. Currently they’re looking for pictures and stories for ugliest bridesmaids’ dresses, wackiest ceremonies, wedding disasters, proposal stories, destination weddings, and weddings that were inspired by a celebrity. The first 250 people to submit a photo online will receive a wedding gift package of samples from their advertisers.
Right now they’re posting submissions they’ve received for ugliest bridesmaids’ dresses on their blog. Of course the original ugly bridesmaids dress archive can be found at uglydress.com.
Have you ever had to wear an ugly bridesmaid’s dress?
Designer, author, and entertaining guru Carolyne Roehm is best known for her gorgeous wrapping paper, ribbon, and embellishments, but I recently discovered she also has a fabulous online wedding magazine filled with inspirational pictures, diy instructions/templates, gift ideas, and more. You should definitely check it out for tabletop, floral, and gift wrap inspiration!
