Wilderness medicine course offered at Strawberry HillStrawberry Hill Nature Preserve is offering a wilderness medicine course on Saturday, June 8 and Sunday, June 9 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day at the Preserve. This Red Cross Wilderness and Remote First Aid training will provide participants with a foundation of emergency first aid knowledge and skills to be able to respond, assess and give care in areas that do not have immediate emergency medical response.

Summer Nature Adventure Camps for kids to be heldStrawberry Hill Nature Preserve is holding a summer camp from Monday, June 18 through Friday, Aug. 9 at the Preserve. To gain an appreciation for and an understanding of healthy natural systems, campers are immersed in a hands-on experience with age-appropriate outdoor activities.

150th Reenactment of the Battle of Hanover to be held July 2On Tuesday, July 2, the 150th Reenactment of the Battle of Hanover will take place, commemorating the 1863 engagement that delayed J.E.B. Stuart's return to Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia during the Gettysburg campaign. J. David Petruzzi, author of “The Complete Gettysburg Guide,” will narrate the event.
More than 200 dedicated cavalry reenactors will recreate the scene on the historic Sheppard Farm in Union Township. The 600-acre farm includes land fought over on June 30, 1863, as Stuart tried to reconnect with Lee. The event is open to the public with ticket sales and other proceeds benefiting the Land Conservancy of Adams County (LCAC). LCAC is a private, nonprofit land trust dedicated to preserving the rural lands and character of Adams County, including historic properties in and around the Gettysburg National Military Park.

Historic Church Tours starts 10th season June 12Historic Church Walking Tours of Gettysburg celebrates its 10th season of providing local residents and tourists alike with visits to historic churches. On Wednesday evenings during the summer months, church volunteers provide short programs about each church and how it played a crucial role during and after America’s most significant Civil War battle.
Rain or shine, beginning June 12, four churches will be featured each Wednesday with a different four churches the following week. This schedule will be alternated throughout the summer with the “West Tour” starting on June 12 and the “East Tour” starting on June 19:
East Tour:Gettysburg Presbyterian, Trinity United Church of Christ, United Methodist (GAR building location) and St. James Lutheran. Tour dates are: June 19; July 3, 17, 31; and Aug. 14, 28.
West Tour:Prince of Peace Episcopal, St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic, St. Paul’s AME Zion and Christ Lutheran. Tour dates are: June 12, 26; July 10, 24; and Aug. 7, 21.
Tours take approximately 90 minutes and begin in front of the Gettysburg Presbyterian Church, 208 Baltimore St., two blocks south of Lincoln Square. Parking is free at the rear of the church. No reservations are required and the cost of the tour is $5, with children 12 and under free. Two tour times are provided each Wednesday, departing at 6 p.m. and at 6:30 p.m. Ticket sales begin 20 minutes prior to each tour.

‘Candlelight at Christ Church: Stories and Songs of a Civil War Hospital’ to be heldAs part of this year's commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg, "Candlelight at Christ Church: Stories and Songs of a Civil War Hospital" will be presented on Friday, May 17 at 8:30 p.m. in the nave of historic Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, 30 Chambersburg St., Gettysburg. More than 8,500 people have attended Candlelight during the past 10 years.
Through authentic, live Civil War-era music and readings from the diaries of the Patriot Daughters of Lancaster who served as nurses at the church, Candlelight at Christ Church brings to life the true stories of the many people who worked to save lives and provide shelter to both soldiers and civilians during the Battle of Gettysburg. In addition to the songs of Stephen Foster, the music will include the "Battle Hymn of the Republic" and "Dixie,” poetry by Walt Whitman and passages from Abraham Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address.

Riverboat to offer extended cruises during ArtsfestThe Pride of the Susquehanna Riverboat will run extended 45-minute public cruises during Artsfest over the Memorial Day weekend from Friday, May 24, 2013 through Monday May 27. Charlie Weaver’s carvings on display at Soldiers National MuseumA selection of the wooden figurine carvings of Clifford Charles Arquette, best known as Charlie Weaver, are now on display at the Soldiers National Museum located at 777 Baltimore St., Gettysburg.
Arquette was born in Ohio and went on to become a comedian, actor and pianist, as well as a wood carver and Civil War enthusiast. The grandfather of such celebrity personalities as David Arquette, Clifford opened the Soldiers Museum in Gettysburg in 1959. He later sold the museum to Leroy Smith who operated the facility under the name American Museum of the Civil War.
The Soldiers National Museum is now showing a selection of the 57 wood-carved figurines that Arquette made. Arquette did 25 years of research to carefully reproduce the uniforms and guns that the figures wear and hold.

Art exhibition now open at Federal Pointe InnTo continue the celebration of its recent opening, the new Federal Pointe Inn, located at 75 Springs Avenue in Gettysburg, is now featuring a special exhibition of paintings by Pennsylvania artist Maciek von Ato.
The exhibition, entitled “Reflections on Historic Gettysburg,” consists of pieces executed by Von Ato in watercolor and gouache. The artist, who received a master’s degree from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, arrived in the United States in 1994. After living in New York City, Von Ato moved to Pennsylvania in 1999 and has been devoting his time to painting and sculpture in his Delaware County studio.
Von Ato’s work primarily focuses on the use of oils, watercolors and gouache, although his is versatile in all forms of media. His pieces are found in private collections in Australia, Brazil, France, Japan and many other countries, including the United States and Canada.
“Reflections on Historic Gettysburg” is currently open at the Federal Pointe Inn and will be available for viewing through the end of August.

Pride of the Susquehanna to offer free cruise to armed forces members, familiesThis year marks the 25th anniversary season for the Harrisburg Area Riverboat Society and the Pride of the Susquehanna Riverboat. As a community service organization, the Riverboat Society has always offered a free monthly cruise during the summer to the Lebanon VA Hospital. Nature Arts and Crafts Summer Series to be held on June 4Strawberry Hill Nature Preserve is offering a four-part Nature Arts and Crafts Summer Series at the Preserve, 1537 Mount Hope Road in Fairfield. The second class in the series will be focused on painting and will be held on Tuesday, June 4 from 7-8:30 p.m. During this part of the summer series, participants will take to the outdoors to experience painting a landscape or outdoor scene.

‘Wine for the Cure’ to be held at Hauser Estate WineryA fundraiser for the Victoria A. Getty Memorial Fund will be held on Saturday, May 18 from 12-4 p.m. at Hauser Estate Winery, 410 Cashtown Road, just west of Gettysburg.
The Victoria A. Getty Memorial Fund is a non-profit organization established in 2002 through the Foundation for Enhancing Communities. This particular fundraiser is in memory of cancer victim Victoria Ann Getty. The fund provides financial support to cancer research, treatment, prevention and awareness.
