Bridal Beauty Strategies
Whether it was due to my extensive Barbie collection, Disney princesses, or The Patriarchy in general, I can’t deny that I was very much into beauty rituals and products quite early on. Age five: I loved watching my mom do her makeup. Age 11: I would spend hours cruising the cosmetics aisles with my best friend at the ol’ Drug Emporium. Today: I’ll defend to the death a woman’s right to not wear makeup/shave/groom according to ridiculous cultural standards…but I still delight in indulging in this silly stuff from time to time, and especially love reading about others’ recommendations and advice. If you do, too, here’s a look at what I’ve been experimenting with regarding wedding beauty prep.

HEALTH. I am currently on Day 19 of Whole30, which is basically the worst but it certainly gets results quickly. It’s very similar to Paleo—I’ve cut out grains, dairy, sugar, and alcohol, which are normally my four food groups. As much as I miss donuts and cheese and bourbon, this (along with consistent running and some weights/yoga) is helping me with some of the pesky weight I’ve wanted to lose for ages.

TEETH WHITENING. I had whitening trays professionally made back in college, so I just needed to pick up some solution from my current dentist. I will be tossing those in a couple times during the next month, but I’ve heard great things about over-the-counter strips too. Anyone have a favorite brand?

SKIN CARE. I’ve been going to a med spa for microderm treatments for a couple of years now, and last month my esthetician recommended a “hydrafacial.” Oh my gosh, you guys. This thing cleans out your pores and smooths your skin like nothing else. I plan to get another one a few days before the wedding so that that foundation airbrushes on like buttah.

TANNING. After prematurely aging my poor skin through hours of laying out as a teenager, I am very anti–tanning bed. I’ve also had several spray tans in my life, with mixed results. Therefore, I am playing it safe with some gradual Jergens use. I bought the face stuff and the full body and have used it twice, and so far so good! It’s not super orangey but still makes a noticeable difference…at least according to my students today. (High school girls notice EVERYTHING. It’s weird.)
And that’s a quick look into the beautifying rituals of one Miss Sixpence! Hopefully it all helps me feel my best on the big day.
