I don’t know how many of you are using The Knot’s checklist to help you with planning, but one for those of you who are not I’ll tell you this: one of the items on the checklist is “start a beauty regimen.”
Even if it wasn’t on the list, fact of the matter is that there will be a lot of pictures taken on my wedding day and I want to look my best. So what does this mean for me?
First up: teeth.
Sparky and I both are red (and white) wine drinkers, and both of us drink at least a cup of coffee a day. My teeth are by no means bad or yellow, but since I plan to smile until my face hurts I want them to be pearly white. I scheduled a cleaning on the Thursday before the wedding, and the hygienist promised me at my last appointment that she’d clean them twice so that they’d sparkle.
I also wanted to whiten (since I never have) and assigned Sparky the task of researching and choosing white strips for both of us.

We ended up going with the once-a-day-for-20-days strips and so far they’ve been great. We’ve had a little sensitivity (but not too bad, and really, that’s pretty normal for my teeth anyway), which led us to skip a day or two, but we’re happy with the results so far.
One of the other things I’ve been paying attention to is my skin. Now, I don’t have terrible skin, but it’s also not the greatest. I get a few pimples when I get stressed out (and during that time of the month), but blackheads are my bigger problem (and the residual redness left over after any blemishes heal). These wouldn’t be the biggest deal except I’m also a stress picker. I don’t even realize I’m doing it most of the time.
What I’m trying to do to improve my overall skin health is to drink a lot of water and also wash my face twice a day. (I know sleep and avoiding stress would also help, but that assumes you’re not finishing a master’s degree, working full time, and planning a wedding.)

I really like the Clean Start line—it smells nice and is gentle on my skin. Sometimes I combine it with my Clarisonic Mia.
I used to take Herpanacine to help my skin, but I stopped taking it because I didn’t notice much of a difference and it made me REALLY nauseous. Some people swear by it, though, so it may work for you!
Some other things that I’m working on before I have my day as a bride are my arms. I know I’m not the only person who has concerns—but, really, my arms are fine. With that being said, I did buy a set of hand weights so that I could do some workouts to tone up. My promise to myself is that any time I start feeling anxious during August I will do a set with the weights.
The other thing I’ll do is pay attention to my hair: I’ll get a haircut mid-August (to trim the ends) and get my hair colored before the wedding. I wish I could say that the red is natural (it is the hair color that I should have been born with, I swear), but it’s not. My colorist and I have found a reddish-brown that looks really natural on me and is hardly noticeable when it grows out. Hardly noticeable isn’t what I’m shooting for, though, so it’ll be nicely colored hair for me.
