Eels Take to the Skies: An Osaka Japan Honeymoon Recap
Mr. Eel and I just returned from our eight-day honeymoon in Osaka, Japan. We left on Christmas Eve and returned the day after New Year’s Day, so it was our first time being away from home and our families during these two major holidays. While we were sad to be away from home, we somehow mustered the strength to have an amazing time in Japan. 🙂
We flew on a Hawaiian Airlines “Moana” themed airplane!
We left Honolulu International Airport on Saturday afternoon (Christmas Eve) at about 2:00 PM and due to the time difference arrived in Japan at 7:00 PM on Christmas Day. We savored our last few hours of Christmas at the top of the Umeda Sky Building, taking in the view of the Osaka skyline.
The view from the top of the Umeda Sky Building on Christmas Day…errr, night.
Over the next eight days we visited Kyoto, Nara, Osaka Castle, and more, and ate a lot of delicious Japanese food (Mr. Eel’s favorite part of the trip).

We stayed in Namba, which was a great location000close to the Namba train station, Dotonbori (a popular food area), and lots of great shopping.

I’m really glad that we decided to postpone our honeymoon a few months after the wedding. I’m a planner by nature, and especially when traveling to a country where English is not the primary language, it’s key to have an itinerary ahead of time. Pre-wedding, my main focus was wedding details, and I didn’t have the mindspace to think about our honeymoon. I researched and planned where we would go and on what days, as many Japanese businesses close during the holidays.
One of my favorite parts of our trip—visiting Harry Potter Land in Universal Studios Japan!
Overall, we had a great time and, as always, it was difficult to go back to work after an amazing vacation. I guess that just means we’ll have to start planning our next adventure!
