Your wedding reception needn’t be restricted to eating, drinking, and sitting at a table until the DJ starts spinning tunes. Some couples like to entertain their guests with a number of fun activities that can be done prior to dinner or throughout the evening. While having playful reception activities certainly bucks tradition, the trend is increasing in popularity. So if you and your partner want to take your wedding reception to the next level, then you might want to consider including one or more of the activities below that are enjoyable for all ages!
1. Hire a Tarot Card Reader
Hire a tarot card reader for a portion of the evening who can read your guests’ future. This is a fun thing that people will either love or at least laugh at, and will certainly be a topic of discussion around the table as they swap stories.
2. Have a Giant Jenga Set (Or a Set at Each Table)
This is a fun block-stacking challenge that can either be done outdoors or at a table (depending on the size of the Jenga set). You can make it competitive by offering a prize to the table that’s able to build the tallest Jenga without it toppling.
3. Offer Table Games
Keeping a collection of crosswords, Sudoku, and word searches at each table is another idea that will stimulate and entertain guests as they feast and drink throughout the evening.
4. Offer Lawn Games
If you’re having an outdoor wedding, including a number of fun lawn games as part of your reception could be right up your alley. There are a number of activities that you could have, including bocce boll, croquet, a ring toss, lawn bowling, and even mini golf.
5. Have a Wedding Wheel
Similar to Wheel of Fortune, guests can spin a wheel featuring a variety of cute prompts like, “Show off Your Best Dance Moves,” “Bride and Groom Kiss,” “Pick Someone to Take a Shot With You” that will have them spinning, and winning, all night long.
6. Put a Message in a Bottle
Everyone loves writing sweet message to the couple on their wedding day. This is a creative twist on the tradition. Guests write sweet messages on tiny pieces of paper that are placed in a glass bottle to be opened on your first wedding anniversary.
7. Hire Carnival Rides
Are you hosting an outdoor wedding with a playful rustic theme? If your budget allows for it, you might want to splurge on one or more carnival rides like a ferris wheel, inflatable castle, or even a merry-go-round. Guests will feel like kids again, not to mention these rides make the ultimate ‘grammable moment.
8. Set up a Photo Booth
This is an entertaining activity that the whole family can enjoy. Create a DIY photo booth with a bunch of different props and costumes including fake moustaches, funny hats, feather boas, and sunglasses. You might also include props that are connected to your theme, too (i.e., rustic = cowboy theme).
9. Take a “Class” Picture
Another photo opportunity! At the end of the night (or prior to the dinner, you choose) have your entire guest list line up for a class picture as if you were back in elementary school. It’s not only a fun nostalgic activity, but it’s a wonderful keepsake too. You might even consider sending each guest a copy!
10. Play the Newlywed Game
This can be used strictly for the bride and groom, or you can extend it to your guests as well. The game asks a variety of funny and quirky questions that tests how well the bride and groom know each other, such as “What’s [groom’s] favorite food?” to “Who is the better cook?”
11. Put Together a Large Puzzle
Set up a large puzzle (you can find jumbo plateau puzzles online) at a prime spot at your reception where guests can mingle and pick at a puzzle throughout the evening. It’s a good way to relax from the dance floor while also getting to know other guests.
As you can see from the list above, there are a number of enjoyable activities that will keep your guests engaged and entertained throughout your wedding. Include some of them on your big day, and you’ll definitely be the host with the most.
