How to Create Flower Collar for Your Dog

Flower dog collar

A wedding day isn’t complete without loved ones ready to share in your joy. For some lucky folks that includes a furry family member. Some even walk their dogs down the aisle!

If you’re going to include your pup, you might want to dress them up a bit. Bowties with tuxedos are adorable but we have a simpler look for the crafty DIYer. Primp your pooch by creating a fresh flower dog collar! Not only are these absolutely beautiful once done, they are easy to make with flowers to match your decor and bouquet!

  • Measuring tape
  • Scissors
  • Rope string
  • Hot glue gun
  • Floral tape
  • Fresh flowers
  • Decorative ribbon

Step 1

Bribe your dog with treats to sit still while you measure his or her neck. Make sure you leave some breathing room so the collar isn’t too tight. Two fingers should be able to fit comfortably between the tape and your dog’s neck. Then, add a few inches on the end for tying.

Step 2

Lay your rope string out to match the length you arrived at in step one. Then, cut five pieces of string, all the same length. Double check your measurements before proceeding by wrapping a piece around your dog’s neck to make sure it’s not too tight.

Step 3

Use your hot glue gun to glue all the string together laying side by side to create a single piece.

An alternative method for those who want a more convenient collar would be to glue these string pieces on a generic pet collar with a plastic clasp. Buy one thin enough that your rope string can cover the entire width and get creative with flower placement later to hid the snap.

Step 4

Take your fresh flowers and trim each stem until they’re only about one to two inches long.

Note: When choosing the flowers you want to use on your collar, check with your vet to make sure none of them are potentially poisonous if ingested.

Step 5

Create little bundles of flowers and wrap the stems together with floral tape. Arrange these bundles using your bouquet for reference if you can so your precious pooch can match you and your bridesmaids. Or just create a different arrangement that suits your taste. Either way, make sure you’re satisfied with the way each bundle looks before taping it.

Step 6

Begin attaching your flower bundles to the collar by placing them against the collar piece and wrapping more floral tape around the stems and the collar in one go.

Step 7

Continue wrapping the flower bundles in place on the collar until you are satisfied with the look.

Step 8

Now is the time to add any embellishments you would like. For example, you can take a decorative ribbon and glue it to the collar in any spot that has a gap. Embellishments can also be used to hid the collar clasp if you’ve chosen to go with the alternative solution.

Step 9

Once you are satisfied with the look, tie that puppy on your puppy!

These collars are so neat, and a cute way to tie your pet’s wedding day look in with the rest of your ceremony. The ideal way to do these would be to make them day of or the night before. Since you’re using fresh flowers, you do run the risk of them wilting, and by making one day of, you minimize this risk. Have a friend or family member help you, especially if you have more than one dog. With a fresh flower collar, your pet will look like a bone-afide wedding party member!
