Let’s face it, some wedding projects are more fun than others. Seating charts? Not so much fun. Cake tasting? More than fun! Wedding favors can be on the fun list, even if there’s no frosting involved. Wedding favors are a sweet little gift of appreciation to send home with your guests. They don’t have to be super complicated or expensive to be enjoyed by all, here are a few projects to inspire you.
If you’ve ever woefully discarded a dried up houseplant you’ll know that gardening isn’t a skill everyone can master. Succulents are the exception. Aloe, cactus, and echeveria are native to arid environments, meaning they are used to going longer periods of time without water (aka, they can withstand some neglect). Affordable terracotta pots from the local craft store can be used to whip up dozens of these beauties in no time at all. We used hemp twine along with laser cut feather shapes in our example. You can even match the shapes and colors with your wedding stationery theme.
Another bonus is that due to the nature of these plants, they can be potted a few days before the wedding and not have to be fussed over while you get those other last minute projects tackled.
- Terracotta pots
- Potting soil (appropriate for the type of plant being used)
- Assorted Succulents
- Hemp twine or ribbon
- Paper shapes
Tip: Most pots have a hole at the bottom to allow drainage. A strip of clear tape will keep the soil from sprinkling everywhere while you transport and arrange the favors at the wedding.
Pattern Wrapped Natural Soap:
Most people use soap everyday. Creating a wedding favor from soap ensures you have a thoughtful and pretty gift for your guests that are sure to be useful. This project is a great way to use up monograms and belly bands from your wedding invitation stationery. For our project we used rough cut bars of soap wrapped in cellophane. Patterned belly bands in coordinating colors were paired with monograms and 2.25 squares for an adorable favor that won’t be left behind.
- Fancy Soap
- Cellophane bags
- Belly Bands
- 2.25 squares of cardstock
- Custom Monograms
- Clear Tape (to secure the belly bands around the bars of soap)
- Zip Dry Glue (to mount the monograms to the squares, and the squares to the bands)
Tip: Wrapping the soap in cellophane ensures that your guests won’t end up with soap on their fingers throughout the reception. No one want to eat hors d’oeuvres with soapy fingers!
Leather Luggage Tags:
Leather Luggage tags are a rising trend in wedding favors. They can be customized with an imprint of your favorite inspirational quote or wedding themed message for your guests, and are available in many colors suited to your color palette.
A great way to use these tags is to press them into double duty as both a wedding favor and an escort card. A pretty font with the guest’s name and table number can be slipped into the window of the luggage tag and will show your guests to their designated table. After the wedding the escort cards can be replaced with the name and address information that will guide wayward luggage back home where it belongs.
- Leather Luggage Tags (Product of Bridgewater, MA USA)
- 8 1/2 x 11 cardstock printed with names & table numbers (cut down to the size of the luggage tag insert)
Tip: An open style luggage tag is best suited for the escort card option.
We’ve got the inspiration, now it’s time to make it yours! You can tweak these ideas to fit your style and theme. Every guest will be gushing about your hosting skills for months to come. There may even be enough time to book a follow up cake testing, because you can never be too sure when it comes to dessert!
Good luck & let your creative juices flow!
