Winter Wedding Drink Recipe: Mulled Cider

Hot mulled apple cider is the perfect beverage for winter wedding. Add some extra spice to your cider by taking mulling into your own hands!

Are you gearing up for a cozy winter wedding? When it’s chilly outside and you’re inside celebrating your marriage with your loved ones, aiming to keep things toasty and comfortable is a good idea. One way you can do this is to place an emphasis on warm drinks. Hot apple cider is the perfect beverage for a winter wedding. While pressing your own apple cider is quite time-consuming and not a possibility for most people, you can certainly mull your own apple cider for your sweet wedding. You don’t need to go out and buy mulling spices, either! You probably already have all of the spices you need for apple cider mulling at home.

First, procure your apple cider. Buy it in bulk if you can. If you have access to a nearby orchard, try that route first for fresh and plentiful cider. If you don’t have success with a nearby orchard, you still might find that you can call an apple cider maker and receive a better rate for buying a large amount directly through the manufacturer.

Next, heat your cider with these mulling spices. You can adjust them to taste, but start off with a small amount of each (in proportion to the amount of cider you’re mulling, about 1/2 – 1 tsp of each per 8 cups of cider) and increase your spices from there if necessary.

  • Orange peel (washed, organic is best)
  • Lemon peel (washed, organic is best)
  • Cinnamon sticks (ground cinnamon will work if you don’t have cinnamon sticks)
  • Whole cloves (ground cloves will work if you don’t have whole cloves)
  • Allspice berries (ground allspice will work if you don’t have allspice berries)
  • Whole nutmegs (ground nutmeg will work if you don’t have whole nutmegs)
  • Cardamom pods (ground cardamom will work if you don’t have cardamom pods)
  • A splash of lemon, orange, or cranberry juice

Optional: A vanilla bean

Then brew the spices with the cider. You can brew your mixture of spices, once you are happy with the taste, for 15-25 minutes. When the cider is ready to be removed from the heat, it should be aromatic.

And just like that, pour and serve your cider. If you put all of your mulling spices into a protective bag, like a tea bag, then you can just remove the bag from the cider. If you dumped all of your ingredients directly into the cider, then you will need to strain them from the cider before serving. Once you have removed your mulling spices, your cider can be poured into individual glasses. To add a nice finishing touch to the presentation of your cider, consider topping each glass of cider with a dried apple and a drizzle of honey. You can serve your hot mulled apple cider in whatever kind of container suits your wedding theme and décor best. Remember: since the cider will be hot, you may want to make sure that you have some protective cup sleeves around.

Tip: Consider dressing up your apple cider serving cups with a small twine or hemp bow.
