There are so many components of wedding planning, and one of them that comes towards the beginning of the process is taking your engagement photos. These are a wonderful way to commemorate this special time for you and your fiance. These photos are also useful in testing out a photographer – or many times, this “shoot” is included in your overall wedding photography package. Many couples also choose to use an engagement photo for their save the date stationery. In planning your shoot, though, you may want to find fun ways to make your photos creative and unique. Luckily, there are many ways to do just that and to set your photos apart from the rest!
Recreate Your First Date
For your engagement shoot, why not revisit where it all began? Have your photographer meet you at the spot where you started your love story: where you had your first date. This will be a special moment to re-experience where your love began, plus it will make for unique and sentimental photos.
Catch the Sun Just Right
Although it may be less than ideal to wake before the sun is up for your engagement shoot, doing so will get you some seriously epic photos. Have your photographer meet you at sunrise to let nature do its thing while you pose in front of the beauty that is the sun making its first appearance of the day in the sky.
There are so many different props that you can use to personalize your engagement photos and make them more creative than standard shots. For instance, if your fiancé and you are both huge bookworms, have books as a part of your shoot. Make it fun by even wearing “nerdy” glasses or dressing in the style that your favorite literary characters would be found in. You can find props to fit almost any common interest: sports, movies, and so on.
Create a Color Scheme
Make your engagement photos uniform by going with a color scheme reflected in wardrobe choices and setting. Maybe choose a monochromatic look, bold hues, or something different that suits your style.
Recreate a Fairy Tale
For your engagement shoot, make it a tale as old as time! Take your favorite fairy tale and do your best to create the ambiance of it for your shoot. For something that is reminiscent of Beauty and the Beast, opt for a shoot with red roses and dress in a blue frock. For Sleeping Beauty, recreate that famous scene of being awoken by your true love’s kiss. After all, there’s no better time than your engagement to recreate some of the most iconic love stories.
Do it at Home
Have your photographer take a step into your personal space to really capture you and your significant other in your element. Here, you’ll feel comfortable and the shoot will casually capture your day-to-day life. You can even opt to have a cozy shoot in your pajamas and will be able to easily include any pets.
Make it Old School
Just because your love story is told in modern day doesn’t mean your engagement shoot can’t take you back in time. Consider giving your shoot some vintage flair by doing it in an antique shop or, if you really want to go the extra mile, by renting a vintage car to use for these photos.
Take it to the Beach
A beach day is the perfect time to get some unique shots of you and your soon-to-be spouse. Put on your bathing suit and flip flops and invite your photographer to follow you around for the day. Have a beach picnic, laze around on a float, or walk along the shore in search of sea shells for some coastal-ly awesome photos.
Embrace the Season
Depending on what time of year your engagement shoot is, you can make yours something special by playing up the season. For instance, if there’s snow on the ground, get some pictures while sledding. If it’s fall, jump into a pile of leaves together. During summer, visit a county fair and ride the ferris wheel. For spring, find some freshly bloomed flowers and strike a pose.
Make it a Feast
Make it Lady and the Tramp-style by having your photographer shoot you while enjoying a plate of spaghetti or sharing an ice cream cone. If you can incorporate your favorite food into the photos, it’ll make them more creative and will definitely fill your tummy at the same time. To shoot something more intimate, set up breakfast in bed and invite your photographer to capture it all on film.
Dress on Theme
While you may have thought of the idea of color-coordinating outfits, did you consider getting matching shirts? Mr. and Mrs. shirts could be just what you need to make your photos unique.
Relish in the Rain
Is your engagement shoot scheduled for a rainy day? No problem! Instead of letting the wet weather get you down, use it as a chance to make your engagement photos creative. Let your hair down and get wet or grab and umbrella and cuddle up with your fiancé under its brim for photos that are truly special, despite the weather.
