8 Summer Bride Makeup Tips

The summer is a fabulous time to get married as the weather is great, the scenery is beautiful, and everyone is always ready to enjoy themselves at this time of year. One thing that may have brides intimidated about a wedding in the thick of summer, however, is the heat. The high temperatures and humidity may scare brides off, causing them to think that maintaining a flawless bridal makeup look in those conditions is nearly impossible. Luckily, there are a number of measures you can take to keep your makeup intact and gorgeous, despite the summer heat.

1. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

Especially for a summer celebration, great hydration in the days leading up to your wedding is key. Drinking plenty of water will give your complexion a natural glow, which minimizes the need to wear heavy makeup at your wedding. In addition to hydrating well in the days leading up to your wedding, be sure to drink water on the actual day, too. It’s a busy day, so it can be easy to forget that you need to stay hydrated!

2. Skip the Moisturizer

Even though you likely have it ingrained that you need to apply moisturizer every day, on a hot summer day it can easily be skipped without repercussion. Especially if it’s humid, your skin will have enough moisture already and adding more will only make it easier for makeup to slide off. Instead, opt for an oil-free primer prior to makeup application. Something lightweight will set the stage well for your foundation.

3. Pick Applications Strategically

Since you don’t want too much heavy makeup on your face in the heat, it’s important to pick just a few key products that you trust to work well in the warm weather. Try going with a bold lip to easily make a statement with just one product that can be touched up throughout the day in a matter of moments. Additionally, a soft eye is a great choice for summer makeup as it’s not too heavy and won’t flake off as a heavy liquid liner may.

4. Have the Right Tools on Hand for Touch-Ups

Even after your makeup artist has left, you need to have the right tools on hand to keep your face intact all day no matter what the weather is. Have your bridesmaids, mom, or a trusted person carry items such as blotting papers, your lipstick or lip gloss, concealer, a small makeup sponge, and a compact. Quick touch-ups throughout a warm day can really save your makeup look.

5. Don’t Touch Your Face

The COVID-19 pandemic has taught everyone to avoid touching their face, so this one shouldn’t be hard at all. No matter what the season, touching your face is a huge reason for makeup not lasting. This is even more true in the summer with the added moisture in the air and on your hands. Avoid inadvertently wiping your makeup off by just keeping your paws away from your face!

6. Avoid Creamy Blush

Although many love the texture and look of a lush, creamy blush, they don’t play well with summer heat. Creamy formulas have a tendency to streak or completely disappear off your face over time. Instead, a soft powdery blush will wear better in the heat, and help to absorb oil.

7. Wear Bronzer with Caution

Nothing says summer like sun-kissed skin, but keep in mind that you’ll need to be careful with bronzer in the summer months. The harsh summer sunlight can cause shimmery bronzers to look too glittery and a bit unnatural. Instead, opt for a matte powder bronzer. Liquid and cream bronzers can be too heavy in the heat and streak, so keep that in mind as well.

8. Have a Fan on Deck

What are bridesmaids for if they aren’t going to carry a handheld fan for you, anyway? A small battery-operated fan can really save your wedding day look in the summer or any time you’re getting married in heat or humidity. Fanning yourself periodically when you’re exposed to the heat helps prevent sweating, which can completely ruin a makeup look. Plus, it’ll keep you cool and comfortable—what could be better than that?

Don’t let the summer heat intimidate you when it comes to your bridal makeup; you can keep your wedding day makeup look fresh and beautiful as long as you follow these tips!
