The week of your wedding can be a stressful time, which is why it’s important to prioritize your health. From hitting the gym to hitting your meditation pillow to making sure you’re getting enough sleep, committing to a self-care routine should be just as crucial to you as finding the perfect “something borrowed and something blue.” After all—you’re the star of your wedding. You owe it to yourself to shine as brightly as you possibly can. Below are six health tips every bride needs to do the week of her wedding.
1. Drink Plenty of Water
Water is nourishing. It’s great for your skin, digestive system, and an important part of your everyday health. Aim for eight to 10 glasses of water per day. Not much of a water drinker? You can perk it up with slices of lemon or cucumber. Bonus tip: if you’re looking to keep your diet in check, ensure you’re drinking a full glass of water before every meal to avoid overindulging.
2. Eat Clean
Crash dieting is a big no-no. To feel energized and to beat the bloat (and lose a few pounds, if that’s your goal) you should be sticking to a diet filled with nutritious and whole foods. Skip the take-out and processed foods, and anything sugary and salty. Ideally, you should be filling your plate with 50% of veggies, 25% whole grains like quinoa or rice, 15% of low-fat protein like fish or tofu, and 10% of a healthy fat like avocado or olive oil. While it’s perfectly fine to snack, make sure you’re eating something nutritious and filling, like carrots and hummus, or a small cup of plain yogurt with fruit.
No doubt you’ve got some serious nerves this week. This is super normal! An effective way to reduce stress and regain balance and clarity is by implementing a meditation routine. Hopefully you’ve already been meditating throughout the pre-wedding months. If not, no worries! This week is the perfect week to start it. There are a slew of YouTube videos and apps to choose from that can guide you. Pick the one that resonates the most with you, and commit to a meditation practice for at least 10 minutes per day, or whenever you need to take a time out and reconnect with your breath.
Let’s get one thing straight: aggressively overexercising is not going to help you drop instant weight. While you might succeed in losing a few pounds, the cost of such will be detrimental. This could include dehydration, injury, and any other risk that could land you in the hospital. Instead, you should be adhering to a balanced exercise routine at least four months prior to the wedding, including cardio, weight lifting, and stretching, like Pilates and yoga. During the week of the wedding, it’s important to keep up your regular routine. But, also don’t stress! If you can’t make a sweat session because you’ve got other responsibilities to handle, go easy on yourself. Even if you can squeeze in a short HIIT routine or yoga class, a little bit of movement goes a long way.
5. Sleep Soundly
Hitting the pillow for a solid eight hours this week will do you a world of good. Not only is a healthy sleep schedule known to improve concentration and productivity, but it also decreases stress and improves your metabolism.
6. Have Fun!
This week is super stressful, but you owe it to yourself to be your best for your big day, so ensure you’re carving out some time for activities that light you up whether that’s spending time with your furry friend, having coffee with your bestie, or watching a funny movie. Doing things that bring you joy are known to alleviate stress, improve your ability to cope, and boost your energy—all things you will need for this week.
Your health should be your number one priority, especially during a week that’s as stress-inducing as the week of your wedding. By taking the necessary steps above, you’re ensuring you’ll be your most glowing and happiest self on the most special day of your life.
