5 Wedding Style Tips for the Groom

Finding the perfect wedding look is always a fun (albeit challenging) experience, whether you’re a bride or a groom. While brides have a wide variety of dresses to choose from, most grooms stick to the classic black suit—but these days, a simple suit can have tons of variety. What style is most appropriate for your wedding theme? What will look best on your body type? Here are a few tips to help you find the perfect suit for your wedding.

1. The Right Fit Is Key

Fit is one of the most important elements of fashion, and it’s particularly important when you’re getting a suit for your wedding day. Your suit should fit you just right; if it’s too small you’ll feel uncomfortable and restricted, and if it’s too large you’ll look like a kid playing dress-up in his dad’s closet. Make sure you work with a tailor to find a suit that’s both comfortable and flattering.

Additionally, it’s also important to look at how a suit is cut and how it looks with your body type. Big, linebacker-sized men can benefit from wearing wide lapels, which balance everything out. Thin gentlemen look best in suits with smaller lapels and a more slim-fit silhouette.

2. Classic Colors Are Always Cool

These days, more and more men are stepping outside the box when it comes to their formal fashion. Think about Hollywood red carpets: how many men have you seen wearing patterned suits (florals are having a real moment) or bold colors like yellow, pink, or blue? With so many male celebs flexing their fashion muscles, you might feel inspired to try a new look for your big day.

If you want to try a bold, fashion-forward suit, I say go for it! But if you’re not feeling up for the challenge, there’s nothing wrong with sticking to the basics: gray, khaki, navy, or black. These colors are classic, they match just about everything, and they’re always available at the menswear shops.

3. Consider the Season

Once you’ve found the right style and the right fit, it’s time to consider the fabric. Men’s suits come in a wide range of material, from breathable linens to heavy fabrics like wool or cashmere. When shopping for the perfect suit, you need to consider not just how it looks, but how it feels—and most importantly, how it will feel on your wedding day.

No man wants to feel uncomfortable while he’s standing at the altar, so make sure your suit is appropriate for the weather you’ll experience during your wedding. If you’re getting married in the middle of summer, you should never wear a heavy suit that will have you sweating bullets. Similarly, you shouldn’t wear a light seersucker suit for a December wedding! Think ahead while you shop to ensure yourself some comfort.

4. Pay Attention to the Details

You might be tempted to reuse some of the staples from your closet for your wedding day look. After all, you’ve got a bunch of white button-downs in your work wardrobe – they’ll look just fine under a new suit jacket, right? Not exactly. If you want to really look your very best on your big day, you should invest in new pieces.

Here’s the reality: even a used shirt in excellent shape can’t hold a candle to a fresh, new shirt. If you’re buying a new suit (or even if you’re renting), you’ll just look more polished if you have a new shirt under that jacket. The same goes for your shoes; if your current pair of dress shoes are scuffed and worn down, you should consider grabbing a new pair. These little details can make all the difference in your finished look.

5. Dress to Feel Your Best

This is one of the most important style tips any groom (or bride) can use: whatever you decide to wear, make sure you feel amazing in it! Your wedding day should be one of the happiest days of your life, and it’s much easier to be happy and enjoy the moment when you’re feeling comfortable and confident.

If you want to wear a floral-printed pink suit, go for it. If you want to wear a standard black tux, do that! If you don’t know what style will make you feel like “you,” don’t be afraid to try a few different options until you find that perfect suit. Then, once you’ve found a suit that makes you feel great, don’t be afraid to wear it with confidence—there’s nothing more dapper than a man owning his outfit!

With these tips, you’ll be able to find a wedding-day suit that fits well, feels great, and makes you feel your best. You’ll feel like a champ on your big day, and you’ll fondly remember that suit for years to come.
