First and foremost, we here at Birch Hill are what you call foodies. With trained chefs from the Culinary Institute of America, Johnson & Wales, and the New England Culinary Institute, our passion, style, standards, and creativity in the kitchen are unparalleled. Moreover, as the world changes and the focus on what we eat continues to shift towards local and seasonal selections, Birch Hill’s attitude towards the menus we create shifts as well. We seek to provide fresh, customized menus that support local farms and a sustainable lifestyle. Beginning in 2016, Birch Hill began taking huge steps to call ourselves the greenest caterer in the Capital Region. From powering our nine venues with 100% solar-energy, to composting over 2,500 gallons of dry food waste a year, and even partnering with local farms to create unique seasonal menus, we're doing our part to make the world of tomorrow not only tasty, but a little more green.

  • It wasn't an easy task to find a venue that had a date that worked for us, was in our budget, and met our location requirements. When we found Birch Hill, we thought it checked off all of our boxes. When we got further into the planning process, we could not have been more wrong. Unfortunately we have made the difficult decision to cancel our wedding plans due to the Coronavirus pandemic. While I know the hospitality industry is greatly impacted (I am a hospitality professional myself), I am still taken aback by how we were treated during a time like this. Our decision was made for several reasons which we thoroughly explained to the venue. Not only did Steven, the owner, not show any empathy to our situation, he accused us of underpaying the deposit, explained how much money he lost for holding the date for us, and told me to consider my deposit to cover my one email chain and one phone call with the salesperson.     This is certainly an unprecedented time for all, and no one wants to cancel their event for forces out of their control, not the couples and not the venues and wedding professionals involved. Our non-refundable payment policy is in place to both protect the client in assurance their date is reserved and give them time to hire their other professionals, as well as to protect us from cancellations in an industry where an average engagement period is 18 months. This industry survives on small deposits made to hold dates months, if not years, in advance. But if every small business wedding venue, ourselves included, issued full refunds to every couple looking to cancel, you would surely see the majority of venues go bankrupt before the year was over. While it is our most present and pressing concern to take care of those clients immediately impacted by the pandemic, we must still respect our commitments to clients booked for events in 2021 and beyond. We have no intention of going under as a result of this pandemic and therefore we maintain a moral and professional obligation to provide the services we were hired for to the couples who have postponed instead of canceling. To prevent financial loss to our couples, as well as the wedding professionals and suppliers who make wedding dreams possible, we have worked tirelessly over the past two months to offer alternative options to our clients. We have been as flexible as possible and have helped dozens of couples find a solution that works for everyone. More than all else, we want to continue to work with our couples on their special day, even if we are forced to rethink it a bit. We are not apathetic to those couples impacted by this nightmare. We have developed strong bonds with our couples throughout the planning process and are more saddened than we can express to see their dream dates disappear and months of planning seemingly put to waste. But we believe love is not canceled, and we look forward to getting back to the business we love and helping others celebrate their love with others. We are deeply saddened we could not come to this same resolution with you, and would like you to know that whenever you do decide to resume your wedding plans, we will happily work with you on what you’ve paid so far to transfer to a new date.
